Contra>Metal Slug

a few years back, i would have agreed. i think contra. super C, contra III: the alien wars, and contra hard corps are four of the finest run 'n gunners i've played. put that together and you have one amazing series. however, metal slug 3 is just so off the chains that i give my nod to the series as a whole. plus, i've never felt that metal slug misstepped (yes, i liked metal slug 4) but contra slipped with the PS games and shattered soldiers was disappointing.

While I am tempted to call you an idiot, it could be your opinion, but please to further help my restrain present an argument, right now you're just fishing for flames.

Personally I enjoy the humor of the Slug series, and the small details, it just gives it that added depth that Contra doesn't have.

DAMMIT THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A POLL! :loco:

...anyhow, I hate comparing these two series because they both have their PROS and CONS. I think in terms of overall "Seriousness" the Gryzor/Contra series beats Metal Slug like a bitch... but for everything else, METAL SLUG just took everything Konami (originally the guys who formed Treasure programmed them up until Contra Spirits, so technically we could say TREASURE developed them) did and improved on it. I don't much care for shits & giggles in my games, but even my beloved Super Contra (Arcade version) cannot compare to the complexities of the SLUG games, especially #3. ---But then SHOCK TROOPERS beats em' all hands down anyway!

Metal Slug without a doubt! I'm an avid fan of the original NES Contra and the Super C sequel, but I pretty much sneeze on everything else -- even the much beloved Contra III. Slug has been consistantly good and has out Contra'ed, Contra.

NES Contra and SNES Contra III were both pretty sweet - but I still think MSX and MS 3 PWN their asses for free.

For technological advances I think they are equal. Contra runs on a few 100k of data. Slug runs on 193 megs. Slug also had a few years advantage over Contra. Throw some extra humor into Contra and some better graphics in and you get slug. If you are compare them side by side contra is deffinately going to suck ass. Add a few years to contra and add 192 megs in and you get slug.

NES Contra series always willl have a place in my heart- as the "foundation for these type games-

they just got better with the 16 bit Contra3-Alien wars, The Hard Corps gave a new meaning to the term "difficult" but man was it fun- But does anyone Agree when it came to PS(with the exception of Shatterd soldier, the Consistent Quiality FUN wasnt there anymore-:(

GunstarHeroes (Gunners Haeven the copycat on ps) were Awesome for their time as well, (as you can tell by my name) its too bad "Treasure" never spawned a sequel....................

Then Metal slug comes along and just perfects the genre- putting it into another league- with the "ACTION COMEDY" humour/presentation type graphics, overall showing more personality and attraction to the characters- Metal Slug Is a true Classic

I guess I'm an idiot then. I grew up playing Contra so naturally I'll that over Metal Slug. I never played the PSone games but based on all the hate I never will. Shattered Soldier kicked ass. Hopefully Neo Contra doesn't fuck up the series again.

Reality Check, same here as well with the growing up thing-

its good that you bypassed the PSone games cuz man do they suck-Terribly and badly........ thats when I started to turn else where and playing the M.S.series i got immediately hooked-

Shattered Soldier Was Great but -Konami has to renew my FAITH in the "Contra" series again though- as you said, hopefully NEO CONTRA with bring it back.

i wouldn't say "perfects" it. despite the numerous sequels, you still can't shoot diagonally. i would have traded the slide (in metal slug 5) for diagonal shooting.

anyway, if it's any run 'n gunner that i could say "perfected" the genre, it'd be gunstar heroes.

Can't argue with you there man, which is the reason why out of most of my MEGA DRIVE collection that will be up for sale this Monday I didn't get rid of Gunstar Heroes. The game is just perfection in every way.

They should make a Contra vs. Metal Slug, kinda like Battletoads/Double Dragon. Now that would be a vs. game worth playing.

Metal Slug without a doubt. Contra can't even see Metal Slug.

CONTRA Vs. METAL SLUG! *That be the shit man. But I dunno, Bill and Lance Gryzor have a heck of alot more experience under their belt than the Marco & Tarma do. The only way the game would be worth it though would be for TREASURE and SNKP truly fleshing out the idea, and then making a game that would damn near make the NEO hardware melt. Otherwise it be simply cool instead of awesome to the 16th powa!

hmnn....point taken......the only gripe I had was that not being able to swich with "fixed" and "free" shot with red or blue..........the ability to do hand to hand combat rocked in it as well.

Oh well, i really like the Contra/Probotector-Series, specially Contra 3 - Alien Wars and the PS2-One...

Definately 2 of the BEST Shoot-em-Ups ever, but Metal Slug 3 is still the BEST of all 2D-Shoot-em-Ups...great work!!!

I loved the NES Contra, the original one I suppose it is, it was pretty badass and kind of innovative because it had a side-scrolling view, plus a level or two where you were looking from a perspective actually behind your character... kinda neat I suppose, at least it is to me. If only the rest of the Contra series were so innovative and fun. Metal Slug doesn't have one game that tops the original Contra, in my opinion, but because Metal Slug as a series really is cool and kept inventing fresh ideas and were just all-around good fun, well I have to say the Metal Slug series of games tops the Contra series hands down.

And in my opinion Metal Slug 3 and Metal Slug X are awesome games, very fun to play, and up there with the original Contra. So I guess in a way Metal Slug X could be on the same level with Contra, but since Contra got to me at an early impressionable age, well it remains a sentimental favorite.

Gunforce 2 is a better comparison imho.
I think the Irem designers wrote MS after the Gunforce games.

Although they are both run n gun, to me they are pretty different.

Contra = serious

Metal Slug = comical/parody

I've played Contra 1 and 2 for NES countless times. Played Contra 3 a little bit, and Contra hardcore I've never finished. (I should do that someday)

Both series are very good. But all in all, my vote probably would go to the MS series, as between the graphics, the animation, the playability, and the fun factor, MS is just... MORE goodness to it.

Hands down, MS series > Contra IMO

Just to be clear, I think the arcade versions of the contra games kinda sucked. Visually, they were sweet. Conceptually, they were awesome, but when it came to actual game play, the control felt entirely too squishy.

When I point up to fire, I want to fire up, not have the bullet stream arc its way, slowly, from forward to up. The jumping animation looked terrible as well and felt far too floaty.

Now, talking about the NES versions, those were about as perfect a run and gun as could be done on that system. Control was a deadlock. Great fun and one of my all time favorite series on the NES. Then, on the SNES, Super Contra is also just the pinnacle of run and gun on that system. The music and dramatic build up to the ending was just unbelievable the firt time I went thru that game.

Now, having said that, I still think that I need to give Metal Slug the nod for overall series. WHile not all installments are top notch, X and 3 are just too good to be denied and MS1 and 5 are certainly pretty good. I kinda' regard 2 and X in the same breath, btw.

Anyway, that's my wordy take on it.

RyoGeo = MS > Contra
