Brand new details about the storyline, and a 1st person mode. What's this? No more zombies? Get the full scoop...
The latest issue of Game Informer has come off the press, and with it a full unveiling of Resident Evil 4. Keep in mind that this information is reliable, but we haven't gotten confirmation from Capcom regarding any of the following.
Perhaps the most surprising revelation was that the game must be viewed in widescreen. If your TV doesn't support 16:9 ratio, you'll have to play the game letterboxed. HDTV users should be happy to hear that the title supports 480 progressive scan.
Along with the aforementioned 1st person view, there are a couple of other new 3rd person options, which keep the camera very close to Leon. Basically, with one of the angles, Leon fills the entire left portion of the screen, making it control almost like it were in the first person, even though it isn't.
**WARNING: STORYLINE SPOILERS**
Resident Evil 4 takes place in 2006, a full four years after the events of RE2. Leon is hired by the president to guard his daughter. Before he can take the job, she is kidnapped and taken to a village in South America where all the villagers hunt him down in an eerie trance. These villagers replace the traditional RE zombies, and act much smarter and more like humans, although they apparently still thirst for human brains. There will be women and children villagers as well, and the line between who is safe and who isn't will be much more blurred than it has been in the past. It appears that the Umbrella Corporation doesn't play a role in the title at all. When we asked wht Umbrella Corp. is not participating here, it was because they have ended their contract with Capcom back in Outbreak.

Several other misc. details about the gameplay were revealed as well:
No more door animations or pre-rendered cutscenes. Everything in the game is done in-engine, with very little load time.
Enemies react when shot in different areas of their body. For example, shooting an enemy in the foot will cause him to hobble.
The new villager zombies come armed with sickles, axes, pitchforks, and other sharp objects, all of which can be thrown at you. With timing and skill these objects can be shot out of the air.
The title features an action button. It might be used to quickly close the gap between a baddie and kick them, or push a ladder over to prevent being followed, etc.
One later level bathes the player in complete darkness, with only the moon occasionally illuminating your surroundings.
The enemies in the game are smarter than previous Resident Evils, and get smarter as you progress. They will attempt to lead you into traps, and try other more human-like actions.
The overall feeling Resident Evil 4 portrayed was much more frantic that previous entries in the series. It looks to be a much more intense-playing title, if nothing else. The game is slated for a fall 2004 release.

Daigo said:maybe they are like the zombies from 28 Days Later.

It also confirms a 2004 release date for the game in the US and Japan and a 2005 debut in Europe.

EDIT according to ign:
so you would expect it to be late 2004 if europe is 05.
