I just recently decided to start playing my instruments again. My acoustic electric and my Bass have been in the closet for about 4 years. Besides strings is there anything on them that I should check out or change before I seriously look into playing again?

tune them and try to jam? I mean, like you were going to buy a new guitar.

Yes. You'll need to get a truss-rod adustment, and your intonation set up. Otherwise you'll have tuning issues, and you don't want that. Also, check out my Neo-guitar lesson threads of past. I plan on doing more soon, so don't think I'm done with them!

Imaging that I have no idea what you are talking about and say that again. :P

If you don't know what he's saying then take your gear to a shop and ask the guys to set it up for you in standard 440 with a fresh set of Elixir strings.

mmmmm... Elixir strings...

Yeah, it's a simple adjustment, but if you don't know how to do it yourself, go and watch and learn :) Most shops will do it for nothing or next to nothing...

Good advice, I'll have to be sure to check out that Neo-guitar thread by Verbatum as well as I'm just starting to play again.
