Playsttion controller are rip-offs. They follow the same look and feel of the 6-button SNES controller but simply add two exra top buttons and two analogue sticks later in its lifetime. I've always loved my huge, black, sturdy Neo controllers, as far as gamepads go, I love the Sega Saturn 3D analogue Nights into Dreams controller, and the Sega Dreamcast had a brilliant design for its controllers, especially when it came to fighting games, sports was fairly straight-forward six action buttons was certainly enough for me.
I really like the GameCube controller a lot, but it doesn't have a leg to stand on in this competition, for lamest recycled ideas, look up Sony PSOne or PS2 controllers on the net. You'll completely unoriginal knockoffs of true classics.
the N64 was atrocious in my opinion, but the Super NES and GameCube controllers are easy to use, easy to grip, reliable, solid, it has force rumble-pack hitback built into the controller for the Cube pad.
Saturn had some excellent controllers, really the only two systems that I bought and would never recommened because of lousy games, sub-par performance, and shitty-ass controllers. Check 'em out...
Panasonic 3DO - Daist chain allows multi-player by hooking controller ports into other superceding controller ports up to 6 or 8 I think can play, maybe not everygame though. Anyway the controller got stuck a lot, it was black with grey buttons, 3 buttons besides the start button, and damn what a drag, The controller was fat, clunky, and above all they were just plain difficult to use. Stay as far away as you can.
Atari Jaguar - I fought a losing battle for my beloved Jag for nearly 3 years then wisened up, looked at the controller looked at the supposedly '64-bit' cartridge loading machine underneath my television and I became kinda upset that I was duped into buying a system just cuz it says its 64-bit and all that good stuff. Jaguar kicked ass in some areas, and still can pull off a lor of amazing on-screen techniques such as blowing up asteroids, blasting vector based enemies in Tempest and personally a very colorful cute game I liked was Rayman. That game showed the potential behind the machine unfortunately that controller just scared too many of us gamers' off.
