Why can't I get into KOF?

Guys help me out here, While I own/have owned 98-01 (had 99) I just cant seem to get into it like some of the other games like MotW and LB2. Both of those games instantly hooked me but the KOFs just seem to be lacking that "certain something" that makes me want to play these to the fullest extent. Is there something wrong with me...:crying: .

Please make things clear for me, make fun of me, or whatever.

Spike Relax. I know the feeling but Correct me if im wrong here,

- like A 25cent gumball- the KOF series is losing its taste rapidly.
Man for them programmers and Character design artists- pulling a new rabbit(kof) out of the hat each year Is DAMN TOUGH, especially if u are desperately looking for ideas to keep the Game FRESH.
(the creation of the new "ASH" Hero design Is an example of this "desperation" IMHO. what a mistake. either they ran outta time or one to many artists worked on his creation)

there has been constant arguing about this subject in other threads as well, for some more than others, feel the same way as you do. - it needs more than an injection but maybe a whole new game built from the ground up- (hardware limitiations???)
that would mean major changes and it looks like they or most of its Fans dont want do go that route.

Dude, as each year KOF gettin Bigger with more moves and characters- backgrounds etc:gameplay IMHO, suffers in the end- KOF2K3 has come out and Im already overlooking it to *sigh*.............2K4.

Dont get me wrong- I still play KOF, but not with the anticipation ive had for them in the past- now when a New KOF is on the scene my attention span dosent last for more than 30 minutes- and I end up going back to MOTW,LB2 or SF3, even an older KOF like 96,98.................

IMHO, most people know deep down that KOF series peaked in 1998, and while the other KOF games afterwards have been somewhat average almost like "SIMS game add-ons", MOTW, LB2, have that freshness (characters graphics, gameplay) to them that make them true sequels.

I play my KOF series once in a while to keep up the interest in the game.... but now it seems more like my interest toward KOF is more of a collecting than actually playing it. :eek_2:

Yeah for me its a collection thing as well but I also just love to play the games. KOF 2K2 I loved and played it to death and I have done it with every KOF. I know I'll do the same as soon as I get 2K3. I don't know what it is about the series but I just love it.

KOF has a very different system that's unique to KOF. It's very, very tight, and the moves have to be input just right or they won't come out. In some KOFs there are shortcuts, in some there aren't. Overall it just feels completely different than any other Neo fighter. Either you like it or you don't.

Same here. I do look up once in awhile to my NEO GEO shelf and I'll bring one down and play it for a week, usually 98 or 2000. I haven't touched 94, 95, 97 in a long time :oh_no:

I used to have this problem too... but now things are changing, and I have SonGohon from these boards to thank for that. After reading so many of his highly detailed descriptions of what a bad ass one is capable of being if your PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE and then go PRACTICE some more, to the point that you know every nuance of whatever the fighting game (not just KOF)... there's something "special" in that. Thus I'm just now begining to appreciate all these years later what so many took for granted since KOF's inception in 1994. ---Sure I played the games right along everyone else, but I never really took it seriously. I'm playing KOF 2002, MOTW, and SVC Chaos in regular round robin 2 1/2 hour intervals against the CPU, then have over some droogs and learn from my mistakes there. I think the biggest "downfall" at least IMO about SNK /SNKP games in general, but more to the point KOF games, is that some of the moves are just masochistic to pull off. Now to someone seasoned doing a pretzel with the stick, then moving F,B,F and pressing two buttons isn't a big deal... but when I do it, there's usually something that goes wrong and I end up gettin' my ass handed to me trying to finish my opponent off with some glitzy move. But alas I will keep trying. :)

KOF however, is a strange franchise when you look at it though, I mean where else do you see such a plethora of odd characters brought together for a fight. The character roster alone is enough to get people into an argument that sparks a real "fist fight"... and I've seen it. It's a good series overall IMO, and I dig it more than I do the SF series, but that's just me.

EXACTLY! Many hate on it but 2K2 is nowhere near as bad in form or backgrounds as 2K1. I still have yet to see all the ballyhoo over 2003 however, since the arcades around here still haven't invested in the new MVS cart to put in a cab. $400+ bucks however, is still too steep for me for one cart. I mean, 2K2 isn't '98 but then what is?

See the thing is I really enjoyed 2K1. The backgrounds weren;t anything amazing but the system was interesting and it was a fun game to play and I also enjoyed 2K2 way more than I enjoyed 98. It feels much tighter and faster and more exciting to me.

Agreed. '98 is ok IMO, definately over-rated. I really enjoyed 2k1, 2k2, and I'm loving 2k3.

I used to hate 01, sold it about year ago, and I now bought it back and like this title. Very solid game play. And I now use into the graphic and music. Take you time, play it more, and you will get into the speed and combo. KOF games are still the mainstream.

It depends how good you are at the game it seems. kof can be hard to get good at, maybe thats why you don't dig it much.

Its one of those type of games where you have to have a good understanding of what your doing before the game lets you enjoy it, thats neogeo all over... like you have to earn the games respect lol.

Alright guys I give it some more time.

On a side note though I really enjoy KOF2000 with 98 being next.

Hell 98 was my first AES game.

I didn't form an appreciation for 2002 until I got to play 2003.
But I've never been a fan of tag fighting anyways.

You need to go to the arcade and watch people play or watch some videos on the net and try to do those combos.

Kof isn't for everybody even if you are an SNK fan. Sometimes there just isn't anything their for you in a certain game. Like with me i can't seem to get into the Last Blade games. There is nothing wrong with LB its just there isn't anything in it for me.
