No New Console
Nintendo to focus on GCN.

February 09, 2004 - Today, IGNcube learned from the Nikkei Index that Nintendo has decided not to release a successor to the GameCube.

Nintendo has decided that it will diversify its game library and sell new peripherals to make the current hardware more appealing to consumers instead of competing directly with Microsoft or Sony.

Nintendo's current plan is to begin releasing these new peripherals in early 2005. There have been no further details on what these peripherals may be or why they would be more appealing to Nintendo fans than a new console.

President Satoru Iwata stated that the reasoning behind delaying the release of a new console is that "customers are fully satisfied with the performance of the current model."

Nintendo still plans to release a new console, but for the next three years it will be content with merely adding features to the GameCube.

Today's news conflicts with George Harrison's recent words. Last September in an interview with IGNcube, he noted, "GameCube will sell well until the next system's launch and I think historically the preceding consoles continue to sell for, say, a year after the following system. We believe now that the next systems won't launch until the end of 2005 or into 2006. That's based on our commitment that we will be at the market at the same time at our competitor's launch and our reading of the marketplace and whether they will be ready by the end of 2005 or not."

In an interview with Electronic Gaming Monthly, George Harrison expressed the same sentiments. When asked when we will see the next GameCube, Harrison replied, "We haven't fixed a date yet, but we've said that we understand the importance of not being late next time, so we'll be ready with our competitors. Following the press, it looks increasingly like Sony will have difficulty making the fall of 2005. We're working to meet them in the market, but we'll see when we get there. It's important for us to have great software -- we know that launching without it won't work, but we also realize that we can't be a year late again, as we were with the GameCube."

In IGNcube's recent interview with Perrin Kaplan, she said, "You know, we're always working on our next system. The minute something launches we always begin [on the next], which is pretty much what we always have done."

IGNcube has contacted Nintendo of America and is waiting for an official statement. We'll update as soon as we learn anything

Could be great news I think, they will finally have the chance to have a long generation to maximize what they can do with the GameCube hardware. Then a mid next generation will be graphically way ahead of the PS3 and XBox2, and will have the headstart to compete with PS4 and XBox3. Granted it looks like what Sega did (releasing a console mid gen and having it destroyed by the next gens hype) but Nintendo has deep pocket books and as always they are taking chances. Some payoff some do not.

Cool I think they can do a lot with what they have. Making a new system isn't going to make the mass markets go out and buy something that isn't even made for them. They're better off working with the people that they do have.

I bet my ass they're just gonna have a long break....hardware speaking

has any of you considered how pointless could be to release a new gen. console so fast??

maybe at Nintendo they understood it
at Sony and Microsoft didnt

what, so innovative, could offer a new console in 2006?
HD capabilities
well who gives a shit...
furthemore
I dont know how many HDTV has been sold in the US till now
but over here 99% of people dont even know what is it
and in the Japanese market is selling very poorly

I'm sure they made the best choice possible

This is good news i think, i really like my Cube way more then my Xbox and PS2 so continued support for the next couple of years is great. Its way to early for a new nintendo console anyway. I wonder what kind of peripherals they will be releasing.

So the next Nintendo console will be delayed a year and a half or so - big deal. When has Nintendo not delayed a console?

Anyway, I don't really see any big advantage to launching a console so soon after the cube. Especially in light of the fact that microprocessor speeds have basically been at a standstill for the last two years.

If you can't offer a huge leap over existing technology, then why bother?

Anyway, I just think the goofballs over at IGN are making a big deal out of nothing.

Hmmmmm .... this is also good in light of the fact that my poor TV is experiencing console overload. There are six systems hooked up to it right now (DC, SNES, NGH, XBOX, GC, N64), and another 3 would just make it look that much more ridiculous :D.

This is great news to me. Many gamers today worry too much about graphics and companies focus too much on graphics to please these types. It seems it takes a while to completely utilize all the resources of a system anyway. Hopefully this can give Nintendo the drive to reclaim the gaming industry. Now for Metroid Prime 2....:drool_2:

I think this is great news. At this point I don't think anything they would have come up with would have looked /played better than anything they have now. Personally I think Sony and MS could learn from N's example. Maximize, then when you can't go any further because of a hardware limit then release a new system.

Meanwhile they can get to work on my NES and N64 Player.

I think it's wise. Nintendo is the kind of company that is known for creating software that will sell regardless of the hardware it's on (for the most part).

I sold my cube, but I know I'll buy another once a new Zelda comes out. Hell, I was enjoying my Gameboy with its ancient technology untill 2001. That says a lot for Nintendo's focus on Software.

I trust they are taking a wise step in regards to that

What I really wonder about is this new DS system. I really wonder about it.

So is Too Human still coming to the next-next generation Nintendo system, or will they finish it for the Cube? LOL

Seriously. Nintendo will never get a large chunk of the PS2/X Box crowd. Straight up trying to compete with PS2 would be nearly impossible for them anyway since Sony already has the advantage. Nintendo is pretty much in the Nintendo market right now and it's what they excel at.

more proof nintendo knows a new system would flop when going head to head with PS3 and Xbox 2.

Hey, maybe they'll program for it for the next 14 years!

THey decided to let X-Box 2 take the Dre4amcast routew, and release a bit later to get more market share. Godo move. If the GC had palyed N64 games, they'd have done a lot better int his round, as they will next. Those Nintendo exclusives keep epople coming

But please, that thread title is really misleading.

More GBA compatible stuff, NES rereleases, and a port of Progress Quest. That would make the GC last at least another 10 years.
