I bought a reasonably cheap LG brand one from futureshop, I have had nothing but gaming bliss since :buttrock:

Buy a drive that does all the standards. Meaning a DVD +/- RW drive. It's worth the extra money, if it even costs extra.

I have the Sony internal drive on my home PC, works quite well, although I've heard the Pioneer one can burn at a slightly faster rate.

Edit: slerch is right, make sure you get something like the Sony that can handle all the standards. It will be worth it in the long run. :)

you should read this:
Tom's Hardware 11 DVD Burner Shootout

Pioneer is the deluxe, name-brand in DVD burners, but this article shows that the LG 4040B is faster! And it does DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W AND DVD/RAM! And at a typical price here of $159 CDN, or $120 US, you really can't go wrong...

The best of the bunch are likely either the TDK or the Plextor drives. Though there weren't any Plextors listed there.

I have an external DVD burner at work with the Pioneer burner inside it, and it works really well. Only reason I've created a coaster is because it was my first attempt at killing the region code on a DVD and changing starting chapters.

It's really good overall.

Don't bother with a dual-format drive. -R is pretty much established as the winner. Discs are cheaper, better compatibility with drives.

Save the cash and buy some blanks.
