Since there's already been less informative and intelligent posts than this one, I might as well.

I don't think you can remove the recycle bin icon from your desktop with the standard shell. Like Logicdustbin suggested, you'll likely have to use a third-party shell to do this.

Or you can always remove it the other way...

Right click your desktop. Click on properties. Click on the Desktop tab. Under the "Background" (wallpaper) selection window hit the Customize Desktop button. In the first tab, uncheck the recycle bin. Hit OK. You may have to hit F5 on the desktop to get it to refresh, but the recycle bin icon should now be gone (without having to download any programs).

Thanks, but you cannot do this. However, I changed to icon picture to nothing....now all I have is the words "recycle bin" Better than before though.

There's no regular method that I know of to remove the bin. Originally Microsoft was going to remove all icons from the XP desktop, including the recycle bin. Apparently people who tested XP freaked out at not having a ready bin on the desktop, so they made it the only required icon.

You'll have to resort to more nefarious means to get rid of it.

It's been said already but TweakUI is the single greatest thing to happen to Windows since the ctrl+alt+del key command

If you are using xp pro you can do it very easily through the group policy editor.

Go to start > run

Type gpedit.msc

Go to User Configuration>Administrative Templates>Click on Desktop

You should see Remove recycle bin from desktop. Double click it, select enable, hit ok and refresh your desktop and it should be gone.

If youre usin xp home youll have to use tweakUI or edit the registry which i dont know off the top of my head which key to edit.
