Just got my hands on a PS2 (some will say its time!) and man does this console suck !!!

I have had a GC since day 1 and have never been disapointed with my purchases sofar (a dozen games).

A couple days ago I got the chance to grab a PS2 and a few games ( FFX-2, Suikoden 3, Dark Cloud 2, Disgaea and Disaster report) and after trying all these games, all supposedly great, I find it to be a big disapointment...

Graphics : big let down compared to the GC, only FFX-2 seems to be above average.

Gameplay : FFX-2, Dark Cloud 2 make me feel like playing Dragon's Lair... just press a button every five minuts to get a new video sequence.

Fun : Disgaea is challenging (and good), Disaster Report let you play and is pretty good altough graphics feel like PSone but at least you are not interrupted by movie every 5 sec, and Suikoden 3... well the gameplay/graphics feels very old to me...
As for FFX-2 and Dark Cloud... what the heck! I can buy DVDs if I wanna watch movies !!!

So is it me or do GC games have more of what I would call "old style gaming" where the focus is more on the gameplay and interaction vs. just watching a succession of video sequences?

You would think that after 4 years developpers would have stopped just using specs for movies and would start making REAL games (thanks Ubisoft for Prince of Persia) but no...

I think its the main reason Nintendo will stay in business, real gamers don't want videos... they want games (And yes, although I only play a few hours a week I consider myself a gamer because of the games I play ... not because of the time spent on a console).

I guess I'll just resell the brand new games I just got except for Disgaea and Disaster Report... anyone has some good "old fashion games" to recommand to me?

We;;,. it's certainly not a GC, but you didn't grab the best titles. Right now, the best RPGs are on GBA, skip PS2.

A lot of the developers on PS2 just go inf ort hose nearly-interactive movies, but the system has some neat games. Of course, if you aren't so cash-strapped as to need the SNK ports, you've lost quite a few. Frankly, I only play it for Castlevania (SotN and planning to get LoI), SNK ports, and music games (Space Channel 5).

PS2 is just old, remember it has been out since the Dreamcast days.

I ditched my US PS2 for a Japanese one, and I am much happier now. Even with the language barrier I have found a ton of good Japanese titles to sink my teeth into :)

As for the GCN, I got one on launch day as well, and have been very happy with it. I am now on my 4th, and probably final Cube, because I broke down and got the Panasonic Q. Definitly a good purchase!

PS2 is old but GC and Xbox were only released a year after, weren't they?

Oh well, at least I still have my old faithfull Neo MVS

The Playstation 2 is starting to show its age in some categories. It's also generally accepted that of the three current systems, PS2 games look the worst.

I like the PS2 because it has a lot of games that you can't get on any other system. Take the Armored Core series for example. It's kind of a niche selection, but for those of us who like it, the PS2 is the only place to get it.

I prefer mostly Japanese developed games, and the majority of the good ones are only on PS2. I go where the games I like are, and for me that's currently PS2.

It sounds to me that you need to try some different games. Play Virtua Fighter 4 Evo, if nothing else it might change your mind about the capabilities of the PS2. If I had no other games for the system, VF4 would easily keep the PS2 relevant in my eyes.

I used to despise the PS2. I was angry about how it helped trash the DC, one of my favorite consoles. I also was unhappy with Sony for a lot of reasons. Eventually I bought a PS2, and I must say there are plenty of good games out for it. Yes, technologically it is fairly primitive (not up to the GC or XBox), but there are still some great games out for it. Too many to name, and enough to make it worthwhile to own.

As for the games you got, I don't care for RPGs, so I have no idea about them. But I can say there are plenty of good action games out for the PS2, so maybe you should be checking those out instead.

Ugh

The PS2 has the best selection of games today- hands down.

How anyone could thing the PS2 is so much 'weaker' than GCN or the X-Box is beyond me

I have all 3- and the PS2, when judged purely on the merit of it's games- is right up there.

It's silly to act like the PS2 is so 'inferior' to the other systems- yes it's gfx capabilities are a tad less 'advanced' than the NEWER systems- but it's nothing clever programming can't compensate for.

VF4:Evo, Rygar, R-Type- these games have NOT been surpassed in their respective genres on the other 2 systems.

Hell, I even like Warhammer: Fire Warrior.

The GCN is the closest to the 'old' systems in terms of game play. And it has RESIDENT EVIL

The X-Box is KING of online play- and has, overall, the most advanced visuals.

And the PS2 is the system with the true selection of games.

You definitely bought the wrong games for the system.

And no, it doesn't suck. Its the best of the three overall.

Gamecube is great and all, but most of their games have zero replay value (don't flame on this fags, they don't if I don't go back to play them later, and my opinion is the only one that counts as far as my buying games for a given system). I sold all my Gamecube games except for Metroid Prime, which is the systems crowning jewel.

ECKSBOCKS (or "The Halo TV Adapter") is now ROMZBOCKS in my house, only good for playing old games I can't easily find anymore. Nobody cares about anything else honestly.

PS2 is the only system with some good and fresh new games that are exclusive to it.

The PS2 architecture is decent, the games look so much worse in part because it is crippled by the lack of VRAM- just 4 mb for the system. This is obviously less RAM than a system deigned for high poly counts should have.

In addition to the other recommendations, try...

-Shadow Hearts
-Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies
-Xenosaga Episode I
-Gungrave
-Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
-Devil May Cry (skip the sequel, though)
-Onimusha 1 and 2
-.hack volumes 1-4

Your assessment of the PS2 (or any Sony system) is spot on...it really does suck.

Mmm... I'm inclined to agree...

But then again, I haven't gotten into all the niche titles on the Sony machines, I've just played the (over)hyped titles such as the Final Fantasies and Metal Gear Solid. Although I have played a nice selection of the shmups/RPGs/rhythm games/etc.

Still, nothing too impressive IMO.

You picked a series or RPGs and you complain about gameplay. The simple answer is to go out and buy a series of fighters, platformers, shooters and so on.

RPG wise I'm actually playing Arc: Twilight of the Spirits and loving it. But I wouldn't recommend it, if you aren't into immersive storytelling RPG's.

Question: What genre is Broken Sword 3?

I thought the same way you did about the PS2. I thought it was pure shit...until I bought one. I am very happy with it. I am still getting an Xbox for Breakdown and other choice titles, but after playing R-Type Final, I understand why this system is still very popular.

Broken Sword is a point and click adventure game, one of the last of this dying breed. I've loved every BS game... The two on PSOne were fantastic. I really want to get 3, but I will probably opt for the PC version, since I don't have any of the next gen consoles :(

Buy a Japanese PS2 - the amount of amazing software for this system in Japan way outclasses its US offerings.

PS2 in the US is very VERY mainstream, hence a ton of crap games. The PS2 is worth owning though just for the awesomen sweetness of VF4: EVO :buttrock:

Probably the best game ever in my book.

Anyone badmouthing the PS2 didn't play Ico.

Anyone who played Ico and didn't like it, didn't get it.

In short, buy a PS2 and play Ico.

Or grow a brain.

Ico is a fucking masterpiece.

I agree on PS2 overall probably being the best, I have hated it MANY times but in the end I go back to it, great controller and has access to just about everything that comes out. I have tried to get rid of it countless times but its been impossible, cube and ps2 are very close for me as I tend to resell games for both as there are very few "next gen" games I tend to keep.
