Vertical is my view of choice. I love the "birds eye view of vert shooties because it gives an actual feeling of flying overhead. My favorite verts: Mars Matrix, Ikaruga, Super Star Soldier, Star Parodier, Slyphia, and the hybrids like Lifeforce and Axelay.

Vertical all the way on shooters that scroll vertically like Irkauga, Shikigami No Shiro 2, Strikers series.

Other shooters like border down though I like horz. R-Type would be awkward as hell vertical.

Overall I like vertical games better than horz. alot of it is that I keep my tv vertical, and its a pain to switch it back, so I just play my vertical games.

BTW: Where in illinois are you if you dont mind me asking?

Cool I lived in Roselle/Schaumburg area 8 years ago. Anyway I love vertical shooters. And as another style preference I like earth based jets in my shooters. Space shooters except for a few don't give me a good feel.

No preference, though I'm generally better at verts than horis. It's all the time spent with glazed eyes, staring at Cave and Psikyo shmups.

Vertical is just easier on my senses for some reason. I can't focus as well on the horizontal shooters. Plus, I think vertical shooters tend to have a better 'flow' to them, like it feels more natural to sway from left to right across the screen, as compared to up n down when it comes to control issues...thats my take.

no preference, love them both but maybe... a slight favortism to Horizontal.

but its very important that the format of the shooter (V or H) match the content of the game.

Overall verticals are my favorites too. When played as intended (on a rotated screen), they are incredible. There are many many fantastic verticals, but far less great horizontal shooters IMO.

Donpachi, Dodonpachi, Shienryu, Batsugun, Raiden Fighters series (3 games), Viper Phase II, Battle Garegga, Battle Bakraid, Strikers 1945 series (3 games), Zero Gunner 2, Varth, Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus, Dimahoo, EsPrade, Guwange, etc. etc. etc.

I prefer them vertical (Raiden series, Armed Police Batrider, Shienryu, etc.), but I also enjoy them horizonal (R-Type, Pulstar).

Verts.

They just seem to focus more on score-based gameplay whereas horis always leave me feeling like "Oh... beating this game = high score."

Border Down would be the major exception.

Most of my favorite shooters are vertical, however I've got nothing against the horizontal games. Blazing Star is one of my favorites and it's horizontal.

Horizontal. I seem to do better at them than vertical shooters.

I prefer vertical myself, how about you?

No real preference,I play verticals like Star Soldier,Gunhed and Aleste and also love stuff like Thunderforce 3,R-Type and Pulstar.

Then you have the middle ground games like Axelay and Viewpoint.

Love em all.

Yeah, I feel exactly the same way.

In fact I just spent 45 minutes playing through the Saturn version of 'Dodonpachi' before I logged in here.

I *heart* Cave.

This is rough.
Overall...there are more verts than hors that I personally love. However, some hors are just CLASSIC...read:

PULSTAR
BLAZING STAR
GRADIUS SERIES
R-TYPE SERIES

Chirst man, they're like the four horsemen. I don't know if many games can stand up to those fantastic four---shmups or not.

I like them both.

But I do dig those 8-bit vertical space shooters from the 80's with music that was played on only 2 sound channels.

Hooked on vertical shooters ever since Xevious came out.

Hell even Yars Revenge before that. ;)
