First of all, understand that I'm very finicky when it comes to my taste in anime. I enjoy such flicks as Vampire Hunter D, Armatige III Dual Matrix, Ghost in the Shell...my tastes' lean towards the sci-fi/horror/fantasy genres', and moderate to heavy on the action side of things.

I come across reviews for Battle Angel, and I'm naturally interested. I check Best Buy, nada. I check Amazon, and I can buy it, used, for the low low price of $50:mad:

*sigh* I might as well stop buying DVDs, save my money, make a list of movies I want, and wait until "the next big digital/video medium" becomes widely available so I don't have to pay astronomical prices for one stinking video:annoyed:

Now lets see how much the Fist of the North Star is...$60!?

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

I feel the same way about the rare oop Dawn of the Dead DVD that goes for anywhere between $60-$90 depending on who's insane enough to buy one.

Although I did just sell my Toy Story 2-pack DVD set for $52, maybe I'll put it toward DotD.

On a vaguely related note, just for fun I looked up how much the special 2-disc edition Tarzan (the animated one, Disney again) was and apparently you can't even FIND IT for sale anywhere. Must be ultra rare (Disney stops production on their DVDs pretty quick).

If you're talking about the Fist of the North Star animated movie, all of Streamline's releases are (thankfully) out of print. Usually released as dub only, with inexplicable cuts, plot point changes, character relationship changes, english voice acting that sounds like people reading out of a phone book (just watch the ADV release of Casshan, a reprinting of Streamline's release, for a great example of complaints #1 and #3) -- Streamline produced the worst domestic releases for japanese animation ever. Do yourself a huge favor, and just wait for someone else to get the license and do a new version. I remember I pulled my VHS copy of Streamline's release of Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro out of the VCR halfway through the movie, and jumped on it until it broke. I haven't listened to the english track on the newer Manga Video release to compare, but having the japanese track with subtitles puts it way ahead. Pioneer's releases of Akira and Lupin III: Mystery of Mamo are also miles ahead of the Streamline releases.

Gah, don't get me started on Streamline. Time for my medication...

Battle Angel Alita is pretty cool, I used to watch it religiously but it may look kinda dated by today's standards. You can also check out the original manga it was based on. I always wished they made more animated ones though.

I might have it on VHS still if you really want to see it. ;)

Speaking of English dubs, do you ever wonder if those Japanese tracks sometimes sound back to a native Japanese speaker, so bad in fact that they would want to hear it in English so that they couldn't understand it and not realize how bad it is? :loco:

Agreed, Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel is my favourite long running manga. I have been reading it since I was 14, and I don't plan on stopping until Kishiro does!

I just watched the Battle Angel DVD again 2 days ago, and I think it has aged very well. Although it is short (about an hour), what is there is fabulous. I don't know why there were never more episodes/OVA's of Battle Angel made :annoyed: It seems like a no-brainer to pick up this manga license since it has been running for so long, and must be at least moderatly successful in Japan? I love the characters, I love the dystopian (yet utopian for some) future, I love the music, I love everything about Battle Angel. Except for the fact that there isn't more :(

@Buro: I know exactly what you are saying about Dawn of the Dead :oh_no: One of my all time favourite movies, my very favourite zombie flick, and I can't even own the DVD because of the rediculous prices it fetches  At least with that shitty looking remake coming out the original will probably see a sweet ass special edition re-release!

Hmm, on a side, and ultimately happier note.

A friend of mine just called me with some good news. He's getting me Seasons 1-6 of Star Trek DS9 for less than $200. Looks like I won't be buying Battle Angel or Fist of the North Star for a while longer.:D

Good Times!

I have Vampire Hunter D on DVD (as well as Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust). I had the original release of it on VHS when it was brought to the states in 1992. I saw a later re-release of it on VHS but it had a different art cover. Sadly, my mom thought that my original Vampire Hunter D VHS tape was evil and broke it right in front of me. She fucking stepped on the god damned thing! I was so fucking pissed off, I ran out of the house. My mom called the police, they went searching for me, found me, and brought me home.

Hell, that was years ago. I got the Vampire Hunter D tape when I was in the 6th grade I think. I had it for a few years too. My dad bought it for me for my birthday and Blockbuster Video (of all places) had the tape for sale at the price of $24.99. It was my favorite Anime of all time too. The Ultra Violence shocked me to say the least but not that much.

The first Ultra violent Anime that I saw was Outlanders. I saw that back when I was about 10 in the 5th grade. My dad rented it for me at Blockbuster Video and I took it to my grandmother's house. I had no idea that it would be that violent. The opening scene scared the shit out of me. When I saw the horned pincess' tits in a scene a few minutes later, I was blown away. My grandmother saw what I was watching and called my mother. She told my father to take the film back. I wouldn't get to actually see the film for a long time. I rented it a number of times with my dad but my mom always got in the way and took it back.

In the fall of 1994, my mom had some surgery done and was in the hospital for weeks (nasty stuff). I was home alone with my dad (Yay!) and he rented me every God Damned violent video that I wanted. I got to see Outlanders (finally), Vampire Hunter D, Fist of the North Star, Project A-Ko 1 and 2 (not violent but pretty good but Project A-Ko 2 sucks), Tank Police (all 4 acts), Akira, RoboCop, Terminator 1 and 2, Conan the Barbarian, Basic Instinct, Rising Sun and a slew of other evil and nasty flicks (like Faces of Death - YUCK!). I was in hog heaven.

I do have a huge anime collection but I and my father did not want to pay that much for the tapes. In those days, Anime tapes cost between $30-$40 each! So we would just rent the tape, copy the tape into a second VCR (extra tapes cost about $2), and have a nice bootleg for only $5! Hell, I have over a hundred of these damn things. Too bad the anime rental store doesn't have VHS tapes anymore - only DVD so I can't make bootlegs of them - oh well....GOOD TIMES FOR SURE!!!

Do a search on eBay for Criterion's release of Salvo'. $800+ of you're lucky. It's not Anime and it sounds like a really fucked up movie.

As far as FotNS on DVD, it was up in the $100 range, which is insane considering it is dub only.

That's what happens when things go out of print and they're good and no other company picks them up. You have to just get used to it. It's the same thing with some video games. Being into video games, you likely already realize this.

And Makismo, you bootlegging monkey fucking douche bag, fuck off.

Don't. With the release of the remake coming soon, they're putting out a special edition of the original on DVD at the same time (finally).

The DVD itself isn't rare, but the .hack volume 1 with the special box can go as high as $125 on a bad week. I own it, but I'd never sell it. I don't think it's worth anywhere near that amount, though it is a good show, but what the hell do I know?

As far as FOTNS, there are plenty of bootlegs from plenty of different companies floating around with English subs and the stolen English dub. I don't own it, but I know someone who does. Of course, if you want to watch HIS version in Japanese, you have to watch it with hard coded Chinese subs...

So are they confirmed to be putting Dawn of the Dead out on DVD when the remake comes out? I'd buy that up in a second. I lost my VHS tape a while ago, and I can't another one to replace it anywhere.

And anyone who would pay that much money for Salo is a fucking moron. That is the worst movie ever.

I've never seen the movie, but I've read some things on it. Having someone eat shit isn't my kind of a movie, sorry. Especially not for $800. They should be paying ME $800 to watch someone eat shit.

I can't understand paying $800 for any one movie no matter how good it is (not that Salo is, I'm just saying). There are cheap boots of Salo's Criterion edition as well...

I guess it's about the same as some Neo collectors paying $2000 for the Metal Slug AES cart.

Both of those would be a pretty stupid purchase though.:)

I just did a search for Salo on eBay. I saw one for around $400, but none of the others were over $100 bucks yet. Perhaps they were copies.

Most of those are boots. Here's a link to the legit one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3384101316&category=2296

All others are bootlegs or not manufactured by Criterion. Evidently the white ring tells you it is the actual Criterion version, while the other "Criterion" version is manufactured by a different company. The bootleg has less chapters as well, instead of 29 it has 9.
