I just keep coming back to this game. I've played Winning Eleven, Fifa, Virua Stiker, and the Super Side Kicks games. While many are very good, and even great, I still keep coming back to Perfect Striker and say "wow".
Just got done playing a very long and drawn out game of 0-0, something that almost never happens in games anymore. Ended in a shoot out, because it's J-League rules. I won, but barely.
Things I love:
Incredible play control
Good D, but still allows for runs to be made.
Hard to score
Control over the formations completely, but also adds in how the players feel that day. Pick from a ton of different formations, make your own, control who marks who, and pick how your defense works, along with on the fly plays to call.
Great PK system. just about EVERY game you just kick it and pray (and the same goes for when you're the goalie). In this you actually get a chance to see where it's going and you CAN make stops based on skill, and not luck.
Sure, the grahpics suck now, but even to this day, the animations are pure gold. I would take these animations in a game today and say "nice". In fact, I don't know if I can say the graphics "suck" as I find them to be pretty good for what they're worth.
And finally, the ball feels real. It doesn't feel like it's on a string like in FIFA. It really seems as if the ball is a ball that was just kicked. Nice physics.
Things that could be better:
a tiny bit of an arcade feel at times. Balls stick to players' feet more than I'd like, but this is a small complaint, as it's the feel that I enjoy.
needs a mem pack to save... damn.
That's it. The game is pure bliss. anyone know if Konami made anymore games that are just like this, but just new versions? International Super Star Soccer is the same game, but I liked the N64 JPN one better. I know ISSS came out for Xbox. Same game, or just the same name? Help, I love this game... tell me Konami made more, please.
