now
just to make clear some points

-for hardcore I'm not meaning necessarily a niche market

-as you can see I didnt include Neo AES
but I always considered it as a "piece of arcade" as we used to say over here and not like an usual console

- I did include PSX cause even if mainstream, It has got the best RPGs catalogue ever

-I didnt include handheld cause the list would be too long

so I start

I voted PC-Engine
It has one of the best platform and shumps
and in Japan is still considered TEH CONSOLE
at the time It oversold MD and Snes together
every over 25 years old japman has got a PCE as 2nd console
always hooked up to the TV

I voted Dreamcast, Saturn, and PC-Engine. Pretty much anything "dead" that still has a market is hardcore (as much as I dislike the term), but those are the three you always hear about.

FM-Towns, you got to be pretty hardcore (and stupid) to want to own that piece of crap.

While "hardcore" is a pretty vague term, I would use it to describe a fanatical fan following more than the system itself. As such, I would have to go with one of the pre-NES systems like the Coleco or Atari which has a huge homebrew scene (sorry for the ignorance, but I cant remember exactly which system it is). Now those mofos are hardcore. Anyone can collect games for a DC, PCE, etc, but to make games from scratch and distribute em? Thats hardcore.

where's the 3DO? there were a lot of hardcore "games," (if you catch my drift) on that system.

It ain't a system

cant consider it hardcore at all:)

SuperNES/SuperFamicom had the best RPG catalogue. PSX only had FF7 rehashes, well, except for Xenogears.

I went with the Sega Master System. IMO, if it wasn't for the stronghold Nintendo had on 99.9% of the third party developers in the mid-late 80's, the SMS would had toppled the NES. I could go on, but I'll just leave with saying that the SMS should have had a fair shake at the stick.

BTW, does anyone remember the ultra classic 3-D Glasses?

Pound for pound one of the coolest console accessories ever made in my book. Hell, they've never even been done on another system since. Kind of makes you want to give a little nod to Sega for being so damn innovative. :)

Excellent Add-on man!

I had those glasses ( still have but... Broken tough :crying: ).

Got them from the Sega Missile Defense 3-D Mega Pack.
Came with the Lightgun too and two pads. I always wanted a NES by that time and didn't realize of the existence of the SMS... Since the day my dad came up with that pack at home, I was more than happy with my beloved SMS !

I started to find people with SMS games around the place and I completelly feel into SEGA's arcade magic touch.

Thank you SEGA for making great consoles ! ( Hey ! I'm a 100% SNK fanboy... );)

PC Engine, Dreamcast, and Saturn are my vote. The only three systems that are quite worthing of an excellent choice of games, excellent arcade ports and shooters

Yup, and Terranigma was never released in the US. Its only english in PAL format, or just plain Japanese.

Tales of Phantasia was fucking badass. I was able to get a translation hack for that and Seiken Densetsu 3, and I think the original Star Ocean just had an update to its hack.

Great games.

Marty games are pretty expensive, if you have a nice collection i'd say that was pretty hardcore, i'd like to but i'm too chicken to even bother.

Playdia and Pippin dont cpount for lack of games, PC-FX to a lesser extent.

It depends on the person, in my mind HARDCORE is completing for example a CD--i collection, not owning a Marty or PCFX with a few games, anyone can do that, few go the xtra mile, me included.

This poll is ill-defined. "Hardcore" means so many different things to so many different people. I think the results will be sort of random, save for the Dreamcast (which we all KNOW is hardcore by any standard :D).

PC Engine, Saturn and SMS

If I see someone who has one, two or especially all three, I can infer that they have good taste, know about niche markets and will buy games they like at any cost. This is what Hardcore is in my mind.

Personally I would vote for a Pioneer LaserActive system, PSX 200 GB or that Decked out GameCube.

However, these are some of my systems that I consider "hardcore"... Also, even though modded systems are fairly common place now I sorta consider my test/debugging/dev system PS1 and PS2 as "hardcore".

As for the PC-Engine family, SEGA Saturn, SMS... those are just mandatory if you're a gaming fan. :buttrock:
