I really want to learn japanese, not kaji or anything because I know that will take my entire life, anyone know of any outside reading material/interactive computer or tv stuff that they personally have found very good? I would like to go to a class to learn it, but with my past experiances with language classes I really dont want to because (no offense) most language teachers really bite.

Really? Didn't seem to work that way for me.. Actually after 5 years (next month), I have picked up some Japanese. I could probably have tried harder to learn.

If I'm ever not with the girlfriend(not Japanese) I'm dating now moving seems like my only option if I want a Japanese girl.

Me.

But I'm not a Japanese girlfriend. :D

If you want language instructor, I live in Princeton, you live in Lawrenceville, 10 minute commute, what more could you ask?

Seriously speaking:

look into Pimmsleur's Japanese kit. It's $50 for like 8 CDs, which will get you speaking Japanese in no time. It's just the beginners course. They have other packages for intermediate and advanced. All can be bought on ebay. I think I have the email still of a woman that sold bootleg copies of the cds, but a little pricey for boots. :-/

Thing is, it only teaches you to talk. That's how kids learn. Kids don't fuss over reading until they already know how to talk.

We fuss over reading in highschool language courses and ultimately fail to grasp the language.

Coincidence? I think not.

Honestly, I had a tough time getting into Japanese until I took it at the local college. A course is really the best way.

You could always tune into Radio Prizm Dash though. Ol' Drifty knows practically all the words to every J-Pop song EVAR!!!1!!!1

this book - link

and someone to use the stuff you learn with (preferably 3-10 hours a week).

combined with a good dictionary like a canon wordtank or this online one - link

should get you to basic - average daily con level within 6 months or so.

from there it becomes much easier to teach yourself. you MUST have someone/anyone to talk to though, JUST studying will get you nowhere and is very hard to keep up anyway.

oh yeah and take the time to learn at least HIRAGANA. it will make the range of texts and learning materials available to you much broader...

that is what i suggest :D

(this might help you too snairdogg!!)

Wow, one to two months to ship? And I thought Media Mail was bad. But anyway, I too really want to learn Japanese. I'm starting high school next year and I'm praying to god that they'll have a Japanese course of some sort. Otherwise... well, that sucks. I have a Computer program to learn Japanese, but quite fraknly, it sucks I was expecting to learn how to read Kanji or something, but it's only for learniong how to talk, Plus, you need a michrophone to use it, to tell you if you're saying it right, which I don't have..

Thanks guys, this is some useful information. I'm definitely going to be buying some more Nihongo books and I'm going to work up some balls to talk to some of the hot Japanese girls on campus. Thanks!:drool_2:

you can also buy it from kinokuniya and indeed any bookstore that has a good range of japanese text books. try giving some local ones a ring with the isbn number maybe?
