Great film, if you haven't seen it yet, at least do yourself the favor of renting this. It's Bill Murray in one of his greatest roles, and one of those surreal movies that makes you think. You don't have to have visited Japan to enjoy it either. It's definitely joining my DVD collection and staying there.

Not really much happens in the story, it's basicly Bill Murry Goes to Japan. That is my only complaint about the movie, everything else is great. I can really relate to being a gaijin living in Japan, and I'm sure I'm not the only member here. Everyone should see this movie.

3/4 of the movie take place in the american lounge of the Hotel of Bill Muray or in american style-rooms... really, past the beginning you don t see much of japan. I ve seen it with my GF and we were disgusted (i have to admit that i fell asleep...).

I'm definitely picking this one up. I loved it when I saw it in the theater, and yes, it is one of those that makes you think. i can see how some people could be put off by the pacing, but IMO the fact that it pulled it off so well is one of the film's strengths. as for not seeing much of Japan, I think that was an excellent way to show just how trapped the main characters were. In any case, I could go on and on, but this movie is definitely a must see for anybody interested in foreign film (despite being made by Americans).

The premise of the film was not to show you Tokyo. It was supposed to show the loneliness and melancholy that result from being in a country with vastly different customs, and a language that you don't understand.

You are correct. Critical acclaim caused it to get a theatrical re-release in many theaters. I went to see it on Saturday and the theater was absolutely packed, I had to sit in the front row. Haven't had to do that in a long time.

I didn't care to much for Lost in Translation. I'm not knocking the movie mind you, it just didn't appeal to me.

The on set documentary is pretty interesting. Also, I usually have no interest in music videos included on movie DVDs, but I liked this one.

For those who have picked it up what prices are you finding it at? I am planning to hit up Best Buy after work as they seem to have DVDs on sale durring release week. But the website shows it at $19.95. Anyone know of any cheaper prices at major chains? I will still buy it, but would not mind saving $5.

I liked it because it made a statement about the absurd conventions of love and togetherness and how two people can bond even though it may not be 100% "right"

Sophia Coppola mentioned in a NY Times interview today that she won't make any "elaborate editions" like including commentary or her personal stuff (other than what's already included) for many years -until she has something to say (its only her second movie)

this movie was alright, don't see it just because you like japan, you might like it more if you've spent a lot of time in hotels overseas, i found it boring at times. the movie could have taken place in germany and it really wouldn't have made much difference.

if you wanna see a good japanese movie where you actually get to see Japan, see takeshi kitanos Kikujiro.

Movie was a snorefest. ZZZzzz

What's with the long lingering butt shot at the beginning?

Man was that girl's character annoying. Like why did she even go to Japan and why was she even married. Who cares?!

Wouldn't have even watched what I did if it wasn't for the 'ole girlfriend

My 3 cents.

sounds like somebody has a short attention span...

also, oddly enough, I agree with DashK, the location really didn't matter as long as it was sufficiently different from America.

I have not seen LiT.

Having read some of the comments above, I am not sure if I want to.

It is a critically acclaimed movie, and everyone raving about me piqued my interest.... but then I remember a similarly movie called "Punch Drunk Love". It was raved by mostly everyone and how it is so different, artistic, etc etc etc, and I was bored out of my mind. In fact, I thought it was downright insipid and fulsome.

Anyway, I still want to see LiT, but I am not going to buy it b/c I really am worried that I will end up hating (perhaps from my own overly zealous expectation from reading all the great reviews and word-of-mouth acclaims).

Maybe I will rent it or something. Or watch LoTR another 300 times.

I loved this freakin movie. I went to see it out of interest of it being set in Japan. This isn't the main focal point of the movie though. It is really just about two unhappy people living their lives. It is just so different from any other movie out there today. I'm very glad it is getting some recognition.

bought it today, and I thought maybe I should've rented it first.

It's good but not WOW, I mean I like artsy movies and all, in fact I love the sincere ending (thanks for not insulting the audience), Bill did some terrific acting, and the photography was brilliant to say the least.

But I found Charlotte to be a little pretentious and desperate for attention, but I guess no one is perfect. I just found Bob more interesting and I also think he appreciated her more.

I think the hype ruined it for me, I probably would have liked it more had I seen it in the theaters before the hype machine started rolling.
