So what's the big deal here? You can get 800mb CD-r's for pennies or free after rebate, and MP3-capable discmans are pretty reasonable too.

Why would I want to go MD instead?

Not much, except:

MD is more compact.
MD is skip resistant.
MD is scratch resistant and more durable.

No big deal to most people, but if you really like small players MD is where it's at. Never really caught on over here though.

And I`m hoping that due to the increase in size, It wouldn`t compress the music in any way, this new MD would be a cheaper alternative to DAT.

My Lyra 2 is a lot more scratch resistant. Frankly, I can live with the smaller cartridge (actualy, I've never even bought up fromt he one it came with)

I bought one cause I am a dj and it really helps to go back and listen to it to here the transitions between songs. It is really easy to I plug it straight in to my mix and press record. Its on a digital medium and can be recorded over if the mix sucks. Its also a lot cheaper and more compact then other musical equipment that can do the same. I can record mixes that are over 74 minutes long on MD heck I have 5 hours if I need it. They are not for all people, but I total love mine and am really looking forward to the 1 gig model.

This is huge...I am a HUGE MD fan..so I might be a little subjective but...

One, you can record full PCM audio onto it...around 90 minutes (like a DAT or Professional CD-recorder)

Two, Battery Life....MD players can play on the LP4 settings for like 50 hours...add on a single AA battery and you can get up to 100!

Three, I record a lot of vinyl mixes as well...and you can do "after the fact" editing which you can't do unless you mix into your computer...using Sound Forge.

Four, right now with Lp4 the worst quality setting you get 5 hours on a disc. I study and work out with this setting as its more than fine if the original recording is a high bitrate...on this setting with Hi-MD around 50 hours on the new discs....impressive.

Five, you can save files, jpegs, doc etc onto the new discs as well.

Six, you can stick a microphone in and record CD quality....can't do that with your IPOD.

How would you record vinyl music with these things? I'd be happy to buy one of those if I could do that...

Recording,

You can either buy a home unit for your rack system and hook it up like a tape deck, etc...

Or plug a portable right into your mixer and press record!!!

What he said...you can buy a Left and Right cable (that merges into a headphones jack) from radio shack and plus it into the master of your mixer...that's what I do...

anyways did you see the price...30,000 yen?!?!?!...crazy...I'll stick with an iPOD.

I'll have to read up on it though...looks like it's going to be cool...

i always thought minidisc was a great idea... in the early 90s. :loco:
with solid-state mp3 players the size of matchbooks, 512mb to 1gb SD cards the size of postage stamps, and a more 'open' architecture regarding sound formats, i dont see the point anymore.
i doubt that sony Hi-MD players and recorders will allow you to use MP3... you will probably have to convert to atrac/openMG/magic gate format.
i dislike the closed tech of the atrac format, openMG and magic gate protection, etc etc.
anyway, i've always thought that sharp's atrac sounded better than sony ones...
obviously this announcement is a way of getting the future media format of the PSP out there.

Yeah...I hear you man...but,

Most MP3's can't record "line in"....only via file swapping.

Battery life is extremely poor due to the power for the hard-drive. In fact, the bigger disk-spaced IPODS have less battery life than earlier ones at around 6 hours.

Most MD players have rechargeable batteriers that you can take out versus the permanent ones in MP3 players. And if the hard-drive fails...you're screwed.

They are expensive...$500 for an 40 GB IPOD.

The SD cards - yeah the space is increasing but the price for these things are still astronomical to say the least. 512 MB SD card is $150 right now.

A minidisc is around $1-2. The new 1 Gb are supposed to be $7. All the old discs will work in the newer players and may also be reformatted to up to 300 or so MB. It's pretty cool technology how they are using this triple layer thing..

Hi-MD sounds really cool. I was thinking about picking up an ipod but with 1GB discs at $7 each plus the ability to use the md player to store non music files is to great.

The problem is, people thought Mini Disc would replace the CD. That isn't true, the Mini Disc replaced the Tape deck. I have a B100 Minidisc player from Sony with the built in Stereo Mics and Stereo speaker... That tiny guy goes with me everywhere, and I've used it to record classes at school... record jam sessions with friends... record songs of my own... just fuck with... etc. You can fast forward, dub over, erase, etc... on the fly. Can't beat it... if you are into recording the question should be more "Why wouldn't you want a mini disc?"

As for the end consumer... nahh... skip it... but they do have a use, that is for sure!
