So is anyone else picking the DC released Psyvariar 2 later this month? It looks like a decent shooter, but I couldn't tell you as I don't have an arcade that would carry anything like this anyway. I preordered a copy from NCSX just for the hell of it. If it sucks, well, there goes $60.

On a side note, is Border Down a good shooter or what? Don't want to lay down the cash if it sucks.

I've got mine pre-ordered as well, I can't wait:drool_2:

Yes, Border Down kicks ass. Well worth the 60 bucks. It won't make your jaw drop or anything, but the more you play it the more fun you'll have with it. :)

I've had it pre-ordered since NCSX put up the pre-orders. :D

And Border Down is incredibly awesome. My favorite horizontal shmup. I just wish the ship/boss/enemy designs had been better... :annoyed:

I'll definitely pick it up, but I'm waiting a bit - screenshots look good, but I'd like to hear some reactions before picking it up. I've still got a backlog of import PS2 shmups to pick up in the meantime.

I'm grabbing the PS2 version, and Border Down is a horrid dissapointment. Some of the worst music to ever grace a game: Horrible functionality, and poorly written melodies sour this games enjoyment. Play a good shooter on your DC like Gigawing 2 instead.

Gotta disagree.

Shit games like GigaWing pale incomparison to BorderDown. A clever system; 16-bit tunes; bizarre ship design; beautiful graphics...no problems here man...Border Down is legit, IMO.

I will be picking this up, always room for dc games. Feels so much better to spend $60 on a game then $360.

gotta disagree with both of you

Giga wing series is one of my favourite
It's top notch stuff for me
however I wouldnt compare it with BD cause they're absolutely different

border down on the other hand is an average horizontal shump
I explain...
even if graphically impressive I'm with Verbatum about the functionality, at least strange...that border system..meh

I DO like the music and melodies
anyway we have to appreciate the effort ,a practically new and un-experienced company(G-Rev), put on it

Define: "16-bit tunes". Do you mean instrumentation quality, or compositional quality?

In border down's case...I would say a combination of the two.

It's pretty hard for a system nowadays to be as weak sonically as a 16-bit game...but border down is pretty simplistic and comes pretty close.

Still---I dig it and it just REMINDS ME of it. Maybe I'm crazy?

I'm in. The DC is a quality console. They should design more arcade games on naomi. The DC easily has the potential to last 15 years like the Neo IMO.

You're not crazy - I definitely agree about Border Down's tunes. I'm not a huge fan of the game, it's overall just too "meh" for me. But I actually like the music - especially Stage 1, Green Border in the Remix mode, Stage 3, Green Border in Arcade, etc.

The music can be a bit goofy, but it's got that classic sound - in fact, it sounds a LOT like older Taito Zuntata team music. Not exactly surprising, considering Yasuhisa Watanabe, aka YACK from Zuntata did the entire soundtrack for Border Down. Gameplay-wise, it's definitely not my favorite horizontal shmup, but it's a solid game. It just doesn't have that "something" that keeps me coming back to certain titles.

I disagree with all of you! Gigawing 1 is better than 2, and way better than Border Down! :D

Seriously, Gigawing is awesome, very intense, 2 is just so damn cheap, although it looks alot nicer.

Border Down, yah, the music is crap, but that's highly subjective (I mean the developers thought it is god-like, otherwise, why release a limited edition with that music cd as a bonus?). But the game is just lukewarm for me. It lacks something... not sure what it is, but it just didn't click with me.

Personally, I think the music in Border Down is excellent. Its not super climatic or awe inspiring that Sakimoto-san's tunes, but the music does get you in a vibe/groove, and is very ole school sounding.

The thing about Border Down is that it really doesn't play like most horis. It kinda has vert score-based-gameplay, and the Border system throws in an EXCELLENT strategy element when it comes to high scores (i.e. you can get 50 million off of the 3rd boss on the Green Border).

IMO Border Down is the best hori ever. But like I said, thats just my opinion. Objectively I guess that title would go to a Thunder Force game or the first R-TYpe or something.

About Border Down, like I wrote in another thread, it's one of the best horizontal shmups I've played in a long, long time. It has all I expect from a good arcade shooter, smooth gameplay, easy to get into yet hard to master, a decent number of levels/areas, high replay value and good scoring opportunities.

BD delivers old school class with today's technology, and that's one of the main reasons for me to love it. The weapon system is straight-forward, which seems to be a common thing in today's shmups.

Every one of the six levels is divided into three zones, the so-called Borders, green, yellow and red. The Borders represent the different flight pathes of your imaginary team of ships, and your number of ships left. You start in the green Border and if you die, you go a Border Down, if you die again after reaching the red Border, it's game over.

Every level has a scoring goal, If you reach or break it, you go Border Up and thus get an extra life, but in order to meet the scoring goals, you have to rack up quite a score in later levels. Your ship is equipped with a normal shot and a huge Break Laser that not only destroys enemy ships with ease but also deflects bullets - this is the core part of BD's scoring system.

Every bullet you eliminate with the laser becomes a score multiplier for the enemy ships you destroy. Say you deflect 10, then 50 and finally 100 bullets and you destroy three ships worth 500 points each during a continous Break Laser blast, you'll get 10x500 + 50x500 + 100x500 = 80,000 points for it alone.... now imagine what scores you can rack up if you manage to kill a boss with your laser while he spews out thousands of bullets... at the end of each level you also get a big bonus for every Break Laser multiplier point. Btw., the number of multiplier points will be shown on your VMU's display, a neat feature IMO... collecting multipliers and getting big Break Laser scores is addictive like crack I tell ya...

The later bosses are quite tough, impossible without knowing when and for how long to fire the Break Laser... there are other quite hard spots in the game but it's not unfair or anything.

Oh yeah, and the extras are very cool too, you can unlock extra ships, continues, one-life/scoring videos, etc.

GET IT. NOW. :)
