It gets worse then this. Whats funny about college is the inflation.
I mean, I go to our student store and they have fucking XBOX systems for sale. Its amazing two books are almost the price of a XBOX.
A grip of semesters ago my books were cheap as hell, they were both hard cover to. These are lame, not even hardcover.

This inflation is retarded.
My good friend Warren spent 200$ on two books.
College is so fucking expensive now. The greed is unbelievable.

What are you guys paying for books?

This semester? $165 for a book, a lab book and a field guide. Absolutely ridiculous isn't it?

It's all a crock of shit really.
and BTW, mostly everyone is paying what you are paying.
besides, don't you know: these campuss book stores are owned by uber corps like barnes and noble and shit. as evil as it gets.

To me, the whole xbox thing is twice as bad as the above. whoaring videogame systems at a place where higher education is the focus?
I can't wait to see how this generation of kids (young teens to mid 20's ) is gonna turn out. god help us all.

Only had one book to buy that was 60 bucks... the rest was art supplies. Still way too expensive, I nearly pissed my pants when I found out how much it was.

The US's idea of "education" is pathetic.

that sucks

but I can understand
In Italy is even worse...also you're like forced to buy'em

can't you find any of these books in your uni library and then make fotocopy??

thank god now I'm in London
the only advantage studying in here is this
I usually dont need to buy any books
teachers supply free notes at every lecture
if you need some more further info, you can find anything you want to rent at library

It get's worse in Dental School. We are forced to pay $3K for a DVD of a bunch of books that are scanned onto it. It's called vitalbook. So basically, you are buying all the books at once on a DVD.

I'd love to meet the person who clears these prices.

I paid $125 for one book this semester.

I'm only taking four classes, but 14 books were required, for a grand total of $350.

I don't even remember previous semesters, but I know that this one wasn't as bad comparatively to some semesters. thank goodness this is the last one...

order em online
i easily saved $100 this semester doing that
one of my history books i got for $13 shipped instead of $50 at the bookstore
you can easily find savings like that online as long as your book isnt a new edition that just came out

I've graduated from college almost two years ago, but here's my secret for NEVER paying for college books again:

Go to your college library, they should have a copy of most, if not all, of the textbooks you need for your classes. Check them out, and then simply keep continually renewing them throughout the semester. Granted, some of them might be older editions, but the new material genrally isn't too important in a newer edition, and if it is, you can always research it.

This method actually works, I did it during my last semester of college when my financial situation was extremely tight. Depending on the policies of your campus' library you may have troubles (i.e. somebody else wants to check out the books and you're forced to return them, etc.), but I didn't.

I used to order them online, but I've had trouble in the past. Things not shipping in time for me to be able to use them for the first assignments for one thing. Another thing is the risk of ordering a book that turns out to be unused by the prof of a particular section, or the problem of profs not posting their required texts until a couple of days before the beginning of the semester.

The library idea is novel, but will not work on my campus. the library here allows anyone affiliated with the university to recall, for any reason, any book that has been checked out.

I took 21 units this semester, so for 6 books and a lab manual, I spent a cool $800.

Thats what I get for going to school.

I agree I dont understand why textbooks are so rediculously priced. For four classes worth of books this semester I spent $500. I kid you not I nearly shit my pants when I saw that they charged me $120 for a real analysis book that is only 300 pages long.

I'm pissed off at college level books, and i'm not even in college. I've been buying graduate level books on telecommunications, for my own personal use, and these fuckers are like 150+

While going through TCU, I noticed that books for science classes generally carried the highest pricetags, whereas texts required for humanities courses (oftentimes which were nothing more than paperback editions of old "classics") cost significantly less in many cases.

Also, it's always best to NOT buy your books prior to attending the first class, as some professors will state up front that they don't use the text and test expressly off of lecture material, thus allowing you to save a few bucks on a book.

Another way to fuck with the system is to not resell your books at the semester's end. Either sell or trade them with a friend who has a book you may need in a coming semester or keep them for future reference. Your campus' bookstore profits heavily from "buy back" programs; stick it to the man and don't participate in a program that gives you a laughable pittance for your books and allows the store to make off like a bandit on used book sales.

Damnit ! I just figured out why I had all that money to blow on beer and stuff while I was in college... I forgot to buy the books :D

But seriously, ask seniors about the books before buying them, some books you cna either take from the library (cos u will read one chapter in the entire year), some you can buy w/ a friend and share, and some you need your own copy.

As for price its partly about how many are printed : for example a Kotler & Dubois (the marketing bible) should be less expensive than other books because I believe that every single business grad in the world has bought one. But sometimes if you need to buy the "Study of ducks feeding in southern mesopotamia" there are probably only a handfull people needing it... thus its higher price...

In any case try to always get your books used if u have to buy one, you save a lot of money for beers :)

Sell your books on half.com. You will almost always get more on there than you would through a school bookstore. Buying them there is also good as long as the seller isn't a moron.
