I just say
It's a desperation move

They were loosing money on each console with 299$ sale price
go figure now

But at this stage of the game (so to speak), Microsoft doesn't seem to care much about that. Deep price cuts – especially if they go unmatched by Sony – would drive up the number of people who own and begin growing accustomed to the Xbox. And having that deep installed customer base is the key to driving sales of a next generation machine.

won't offer ABSOLUTELY anything new or just interesting
and would give even more advantage to Sony for a proper/quite PS3 launch

as far as the retail business goes, yep that's true. wholesale prices of systems are usually only like $2-3 cheaper then what they actually sell em for in stores. i remember when i had my store i complained to my distributor about that once and was just told "well you aren't supposed to make money off of the systems. you just need to get them out to people so you can make money off of the games."

so yeah, if the stores themselves don't make money off of the systems, then the game companies shouldn't have have a right to either. losing money though.. well, that's inevitable in most businesses. have to lose/spend money to make money.

Frankly, this article is as much rumor mongering as the rumors that claimed PS2 would follow the GC's price cut by theis Christmas. $149 is what MS is telling Gamestop for E3, not $179.

problem is they are already hurting.

they are in massive debt already. Think about this... they were at 133 million in the whole PER 3 months (or EVERY 3 months they lost $133 mil) at the $200 price drop.....

Thats fine if they drop it.... but they are going to be eating some serious losses. I HIGHLY doubt any kind of software sales are going to bring that back.

we knew its inevitable..... and I know Ms has money..... but I seriously think that is insanity.

I honestly can't see MS lowering the price to $99.00. I mean, they would be losing a ton of money with that. Even more than they already are.

However, if it does go that low, fuck it, I'll buy two more. Romzbox indeed.

I've long thought Sony and Nintendo had something of a silent agreement to drive MS bankrupt ont he X-Box, this would do it. At 99$, it would sell as a Linux terminal/server to geeks who already own one, and no money to be made back.
