The Japanese video rental shop here in town had these a few years ago (don't know if they still do). Watched the first one, but wasn't too crazy about it -- I remember it was a bit too "talky" (I was expecting more action than dialogue).

There are a total of 3 Salamander anime films (featuring character designs by Mikimoto Haruhiko [Macross, Orguss, etc.]). They were released on VHS and LD in Japan, but have yet to make it to R-2 DVD afaik. Here's a photo of all 3, from an auctions.yahoo.co.jp auction (for some reason, nobody's auctioning the LDs currently):

From left to right...
沙羅曼蛇 (Salamander)
BASIC SAGA 沙羅曼蛇 瞑想のパオラ (BASIC SAGA Salamander: Meisou no Paora)
ADVANCED SAGA 沙羅曼蛇 ゴーファーの野望 (ADVANCED SAGA Salamander: Gofer no yabou)

If you don't have a Japanese video store w/older stock in your area, you might try plugging that first video title into WinMX to see if any Japanese users have copies available for trade.

Hi. OK, I'll mainly build upon what DNC has said. I have the LDs. There are three of them. Pony Canyon. Nice. CLV, but I do not worship CAV as much as others do.

Salamander is not a great OVA series, I only really bought it because I am a whore of the game (NES version is my favorite 2D 80s shooter). Still, I like it. DNC is right in that it's a lot of dialogue, little action. The animation is quite nice though.

What you first posted, and the ebay link, is a bootleg HK DVD. Will it be good? Well, no, obviously, because it's almost 180 minutes on one DVD. Plus, it's an capture of the LDs. It's not really DVD quality. Furthermore, the excellent English subtitles? I really have to laugh at this. Two years ago I fansubbed those LDs and uploaded the scripts to the internet. I first learned about the Salamander boots because a friend of mine was "hey, aren't these your scripts?" And sure enough, they were. Now, I guess it's kinda amusing that some pirate in SE Asia would steal my scripts, but the real amusement came from the playback. I noted that while the subs were good, they were good ONLY WHEN THEY WERE ON SCREEN; about 30% of the lines are MISSING. My guess is they improperly imported the SSA files. So, those English subtitles are excellent, all 70% of them!

IOW, this set of Salamander is yet another reason why HK DVD's subtitles are wonderful, if you are fluent in Japanese. :loco:

i have it pritty good ;)
Just be aware that it is a bootleg, however. Someone else on the boards has the set, I think (perhaps it was you who found this out? I can't remember) and found out the company who did it is a known bootleg company.

Yeah, there is no other way to get it, unless it's on R2 DVD, but then there are no subtitles and it's expensive. I'm just letting people know that that is a bootleg, not attacking you or anyone else.

It's available on:

Japanese VHS
Japanese LD
UK VHS ( Western Connections... ::shudders:: )

All OOP.

It is not on R2 DVD in Japan or in the UK.

Then there is Fansubbed VHS and the bootleg HK DVDs (and I suppose vcds and computer files if someone encodes them)

Just wanted to update the thread. While looking at Nikaku Animart's online LD catalog, I noticed that they still list the first LD of Salamander for $45. I doubt they've got more than one or two of these left, so jump on it if you're interested.
