Wow, having not seen "lost in translation" yet (feb 3 release) I hope that the listings here have not gotten my hopes up for this. Honestly all I want is a good Bill Murray film...

Film Editing: "City of God," "Cold Mountain," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King," "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" "Seabiscuit."

If LotR wins this I will be as offended about the "academy" and their decision making abilities as I was when Titanic won best film. My god the 1 thing that stuck out in my mind after I got done with LotR was "man that was really poor editing."

Heh, actually Lost In Translation was release last year (even here in Minneapolis) early last November. Fun, bittersweet romantic comedy.

Remember: The nominations come from their peers in the area. So while you may not have been a fan of the editing (which has nothing to do with length of the movie), the editors who sit in the academy thought it deserved a nod. not to say I have an opinion one way or the other, I just though I'd mention that

What? The Last Samurai didn't make it to the nominees in the Best Movie Award category? Tom Cruise didn't make it to the Best Actor Award? That's cold... It's probably the best movie I've seen in a long time.

Video Release. I missed it in the only theatre that showed it for 150 miles. It was only there for about 2 weeks and I put off seeing it, then it was gone.

Yea, I know what they mean by editing. I was refereing the transition from scene to scene was atrocious. The fades to white and black were irritating and the speed of the movie was halted practically by a lack of interweaving between Frodo and the war sequences. Poor editing and poor editing decisions = me not agreeing with it.

I can't believe Gigli, Underworld and House of the Dead are not nominated as Picture of the Year. Those morons don't know crap about cinematic triumph!

1. Best Picture:
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

Let the trilogy get what it has earned!

2. Actor:
Johnny Depp, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl";

Again Johnny Depp proves how great he is as an actor, this has to be one of the greatest characters he has ever played.

3. Actress:
Charlize Theron, "Monster";

She's just hot!

4. Supporting Actor:
Ken Watanabe, "The Last Samurai."

If only the little boy was given the nod too.

5. Supporting Actress:
Renee Zellweger, "Cold Mountain."

Nuff' said

6. Director:
Peter Jackson, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King";

Most deserved director.

8. Adapted Screenplay: Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"

So true to the book!

9. Original Screenplay: Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson and David Reynolds, "Finding Nemo"

Come on! Nemo was damned from hatchling....all his family is eaten with the exception of his dad and he has a gimpy fin!

10. Animated feature film: "Finding Nemo"

Like the others stood a chance?

11. Art Direction: "The Last Samurai,"

Sorry ROTK but the Last Samurai outdid you here

12. Cinematography: "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,"

13. Sound Mixing: "The Last Samurai," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

I'm torn between these 2 for this one....while The Last Samurai just overall wowed me more than ROTK, the entire LOTR series owns my DTS surround sound.

14. Sound Editing: "Finding Nemo," "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. "

17. Costume: "The Last Samurai,"

Nail....head...easily

20. Film Editing: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King,"

Again ROTK here

21. Makeup: "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

You really need an explanation?

24. Visual Effects: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

See 21. Makeup:

The Oscars are fun to watch and see who "wins" (really it's who bought out enough ads in the LA papers proclaiming 'For your Consideration' and who sucked off enough Academy members), but don't sweat it if you don't see your favorites up there. You rarely do. In the words of one reviewer:

The Oscars are voted on by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a body that might be more accurately dubbed the Hollywood Senior Citizen Society. At the ceremony the Academy-controlled TV cameras always show you Tom Cruise, Ashton Kutcher and Hilary Swank. But think about the voters you never see: a group so suffused with dotty cronies (think Carmine Caridi) and aged starlets (hello, Stella Stevens!) you wouldn't trust them to direct you to the Kodak Theatre, let alone ask them what film you should next see.

So, honestly, it doesn't really matter. If the movie's good, it's good, and no Academy Award will change that.

That said, I'm pleasantly surprised by this year's nod. I'm shocked Twilight Samurai, Whale Rider and Triplettes of Belleville got nominations, so it will be interesting to see who gets the win.

Who I think SHOULD win:

1. Best Picture:
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" or
"Lost in Translation"

Either one will do.

2. Actor:
Bill Murray, "Lost in Translation"

3. Actress:
Charlize Theron, "Monster";

4. Supporting Actor:
Benicio Del Toro, "21 Grams";

5. Supporting Actress:
Shohreh Aghdashloo, "House of Sand and Fog";

Eh, I'm up in the air about this one. Aghdashloo I've heard gave a really good performance, and the other ones I saw didn't make me go nuts.

6. Director:
Sofia Coppola, "Lost in Translation"

7. Best Foreign Film:
"The Twilight Samurai," Japan

8. Adapted Screenplay:
Robert Pulcini & Shari Springer Berman, "American Splendor"

9. Original Screenplay:
Sofia Coppola, "Lost in Translation."

10. Animated feature film:
"Finding Nemo"

11. Art Direction:
"The Last Samurai"

I'm disappointed Big Fish didn't get an Art Direction nod, but oh well.

12. Cinematography:
"City of God"

13. Sound Mixing:
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

14. Sound Editing:
"Finding Nemo"

This should've been Kill Bill's.

15. Original Score:
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," Howard Shore.

16. Original Song:
"Into the West" from "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," Fran Walsh, Howard Shore and Annie Lennox;

Triplettes of Belleville's song I hated fifteen seconds into it. So goddamn annoying.

17. Costume:
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

18. Documentary Feature:
"Capturing the Friedmans,"

19. Documentary (short subject): ?

No idea. Didn't see any of them.

20. Film Editing:
"City of God"

21. Makeup:
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

22. Animated Short Film:
"Destino"

23. Live Action Short Film: ?

No idea. Didn't see any of them.

24. Visual Effects:
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

Wot!?!!!!111 :D

Just kidding. I liked it, and I hope it wins best song, but it should also win "most likely to get stuck in your head".

Haha. I only mentioned it because I'm choosing LOTR's just for spite. "Triplettes of Belleville" was more original and more tied in with the story, so honestly it deserves it more. But, maaaaaan, I was rooting for the mobsters by the end just to shut those old hags up.

And I'm surprised none of the Matrixes were able to get a Special Effects nod. The entire things were just one big special effect! Do they really need two ship movies in that category?!
