Hey,
It supposedly is very beautifuly shot and very true to what happened 2000 years ago. The Pope saw it, and although a Pope is not alowed to officialy acknowledge a movie, said it was very good.
That rumor was put to rest last week.
The Pope did see it, but didn't comment on it.
One of his staff said he liked it, but the Pope never gives opinions on these things. The quote that is being attributed to him is "it is as it was", but there's no proof that he ever said that.
However, with that said, anyone interested in studying effective movie promotion (using the ol' "all publicity is good publicity"), look no further than this.
Gibson and his father are members of an off-shoot of traditional Catholicism that does not recognize Vatican II (any Catholic knows what that is) -so that means he does not (a) believe the pope is infalliable and (b) he does not accept the Pope's absolvetion of the Jews for Jesus' death. This is reflected in the movie which is why there's a lot of ruckus.
Of course, he really doesn't want to have subtitles and he filmed the movie entirely in two dead languages (no one speaks them anymore). So, if he gets his wish you may be in for a very long movie. he and his studio have been fighting over this (a few of his screenings have had subtitles, but he claims they were only to help religious scholars and will be removed in the end)
