I will never forget this -

Last time Yu Suzuki was asked about Shenmue3, he just looked down and sadly said -

"Not yet..."

Yeah, I'm waiting very patiently for Shenmue III and I really hope it's coming eventually. I can wait a few more years, but I'm thinking I may have to wait even longer...

Shenmue is without a doubt my favourite game EVER.

I actually cried the first time I booted up Shenmue II on my Dreamcast... It was so great. It still is.

And then, Yu Suzuki said exactly what Mushiki quoted... "Not Yet..."

You know what? I don't care. I know that Yu Suzuki will please us fans and loyal followers. I know he won't let us down.

And honestly, I want to see that game withOUT any grahpic enhancement. I want a Dreamcast version of it!

I haven't played Shenmue but I always wanted to. Does anyone have a DC Shenmue II I can get ahold of for a reasonable price? It would be much appreciated.

Shen Mue II didn't sell on XB. XB owners like DOA Volleyball and Halo, but hardly any of them have even heard of Shen Mue, let alone played it. Put it on Cube next time. :buttrock:

I agree, Xbox users didn't pay attention to Shenmue II.
About Shenmue III for Gamecube, I doubt it. First of all, I don't think that either Sega, AM2 or Yu Suzuki himself would consider Nintendo's console a good investment. The Gamecube isn't selling as much as it should, and that's a fact. The numbers are there.

And second... a QTE using a Gamecube controller!? Gah! *dies*

Meaning to say "Not PS2, not Xbox and not Gamecube"? That's fine by me! You know that I'd rather see it on my DC! :D

In that case, let me rephrase -

"Not in current or past generation systems"

Better now?

Boooyah. Always spoiling my dreams and fantasies, ne? =P

And anyway, I wouldn't be so sure. Why on earth would Sega endorse a game that never met the what was needed for it to be a Hit back on the DC, to appear in a Next-Gen console? You think that they will make a re-edition of the first 2 games and sell it as a bundle along with Shenmue 3 in a next generation platform? Pfft... dream on.
You know I'm the world's biggest Shenmue fan, but not even I can hope for something sooooo unlikely...

Uh...the Christmas numbers that showed the system selling MUCH higher than XB? Sorry, man, in the US it's there. Sega HAS put a lot of titles on GC already, but AM2 hasn't so far.

Sega? Let's say "Sonic Team".

yeah damn that game looked good. I didnt like Shenmu 2 but I thing that is because they didnt take the time to translate the game into english. Instead just subtitles.
"We thought the fans would like it better so it could be like a Japanese movie."
I HATE READING SUBTITLES IN A MOVIE you can't concintrate on whats going on and read at the same time.

Watch enough anime and you will not even know you are reading anymore. You will be able to look at the action and read at the same time. It is kind of odd really, but you would get the hang of it.

I agree with X. And it's so much better to listen to the original voices... It's the way the producers intended the game to be. Dubbing is the worst thing that ever happened to this world. That's for sure.

The Xbox version was dubbed with the same goofy voices as the original, so get that version. I prefer the subtitles myself, as the game seems so much more professional with them. The English dialogue did not translate well to the flow of the game, I'm sure most people would agree.

"Did you see anything on that day"
"That day?"
"Yes, the day it snowed. Did you see anything?"
"Oh, that day! No, I didn't see anything that day."

Or the always present Ryo Hazuki, Not-Ladies Man Version:

Nozomi: "Stay with me... for a while..."
(Nozomi leans her head onto his shoulder)
Ryo: "Yeah."

Smooooth! ROFL!

Actually, for Shenmue 2, I actually liked the english voices better around, this time. The original Japanese voices for Shenmue II were quite uninspired and, for the most part, lacked any emotion to them. The english voice acting was much more colorful, and enjoyable. Wel, except for 1 single line of dialogue spoken by Xiuying, but outside of that. I also like the way the english versions spoke the chinese names a bit closer to the original chinese pronunciations. Japanese stuck with the romanji, the whole way through, and of course butchers the names in the familiar japanese way.

The first Shenmue, I did like the Japanese voices better, but the 2nd one seemed clearly to take Ryo out of Japan and into China. A location that tends to support english better than japanese. Also it's more believable that in order for Ryo and the inhabitants to communicate, they use a median language like english. It just seems that the "real original" language changed between the first and the second one. Still, my opinion was that the effort wasn't there in the Japanese voice acting for most people in it. The english ones at least sound like they tried harder and quite a few voices are quite amusing and fun to hear. Much better done than Shenmue 1, this time with actual emotion behind their voices.

I don't know about whether the lack of sales of Shenmue II had much to do with the Xbox or the idea that the amount of Dreamcast fans on the Xbox weren't enough to make a huge seller. Heck, the amount of Dreamcast fans, at the time, on the Dreamcast weren't enough to make that version a decent seller. If it was on the Cube or the PS2, I doubt it would make a hint of difference as we've seen Sega titles flop on both systems.

Shenmue 2 is/was one of the best games ever made. I dont think ive been so unable to put down a game before.

I agree with Kirk, the voice acting is an interesting issue.

The language is really really interesting in Shenmue 2, I never got a chance to play it with the english voice acting, but I was really into the Japanese voice acting but I wished they had integrated the idea of everybody speaking Chinese or English and having Ryo being confused by it. The game is all about intergration into the environment and it kinda brings you out of the game to have Ryo be able to communicate with everybody perfectly.

Maybe just one or two scenes of Ryo studying chinese or english, or maybe even some mini games of trying to figure the language out. There was an opprotunity lost here.

The game didnt sell because its a hardcore game with limited appeal. Only die hard Am2 fans bought it and they were the only ones who liked it. The game also has an incredibly deep exploration factor, which I think bored the hell out of most people who played it.

Shenmue in general is just not for the American public. When the original came out, I was working in a game store. There was a lot of hype surrounding it, and I think a lot of people preordered it that were clearly not going to like it. The day after it came out a lot of people came back in to return it.

Yes, it made me sad to hear people say the game sucked, but you have to consider the source. The majority of the gaming public wouldn't know a good game if it bit them on the ass. They were expecting a non-stop action game, and Shenmue was more of an experience. I think those of us who love the games had a certain background, or a background that shared a lot of traits.

For me, it was an interest in asian cultures, a background in the martial arts, and a love for the martial arts movies of the 80's and 90's. The rest just fell into place. I wouldn't say I got the game because I was an AM2 fanboy, I just knew that it would be an amazing experience. I was not disappointed.

I hope the next game does make it out, on the current generation of consoles or the next. I just gave up hope on it being a successful franchise long ago. It will forever be a niche title.

Amen to that, Ghost-Dog.

Indeed, Shenmue is one of those really great games that only a slight piece of the market trully get to know.
As you described it, Shenmue is an "Experience". In fact, the game genre is off on every website (Except Shenmue's offical website). Most places labeled it as an RPG. Others as an Epic RPG, and even Action RPG. It actually is a game that does NOT fit into ANY other category. That's why AM2 gave it the title of F.R.E.E., which stands for "Fully Reactive Eyes Entreteinment". I think that the acronym suits Shenmue perfectly.
