Re: Dumb Random Questions list for our Japanese members

No such thing as a dumb question...

1.) What does 'san' at the end of a name mean?
The same meaning as 'Mr' or 'Miss/Mrs' except that you can use it with first or last names.

2.) Is the term "Jap" still derogatory?
YES!

3.) What is the word on the street among the Japanese which they feel about the war, how they feel about Bush, and the American People?
Most of the populace are against the war, and do not feel that Japan should be sending troops. Part of the reason for this is the anti-warlike nature of the Japanese constitution.

Bush (no offense to any of his supporters) has a reputation worldwide for not being a very smart man. This view is shared by Japan. That being said, I think the Japanese like him, but they aren't comfortable with his hawkish nature.

Japanese, especially the younger generation, like Americans a lot, and they love travelling to the US etc.

4.) Do the Japanese still feel that Americans are lazy?
No, they have a lot of respect for Americans. Not so much for the American government, but a lot of respect for the American people.

5.) Do the Japanese forgive George Bush Sr. for puking at that dinner?
LOL, yes.

6.) What is the current favorite game platform in Japan?
PS2, by far and away.

7.) What is the all time favorite game platform in Japan?
Tough question. The Famicom sold hundreds and thousands of units back in the day, probably more than the PS2 has now, but most of the kids these days have probably never seen one.

The word Puresutei (Playstation) has become synonymous with video games, like the was Kleenex has come to mean 'tissue'. People will ask 'Do you have a Puresutei?' meaning 'Do you have a video game system?'

You'd be amazed at how many ugly Westerners I've seen with a hot Japanese girlfriend.

It's the 'Zero to Hero' effect.

Is that "PlayStation" with a crippling Japanese accent or just easier to pronounce (for Japanese speakers)?

Well, they could very easily be having a hot Japanese girlfriend, but not be getting any. Do you have to work hard for that?

My only memories is when I lived off base, and I would play this little sitdown Double Dragon II cab outside this Japanese store. A lot of times girls would just keep buying me candy and watch me play. I couldn't understand a word they said, but they'd keep buying me candy and Dragonball cards and shit like that.

On the flipside, I also had a lot of Japanese guys start humping the air and saying "FUCK-OO" over and over again before I inevitably split like a bat out of hell. Dunno if they were gay or didn't know I was a guy.

Here's a quick question. I know that the Japanese language was originally written vertically from right to left, but it seems to be commonly written horizontally from left to right (probably because of the internet). Is there a rule of thumb involving how to write it and do the Japanese find it difficult to switch around when reading it?

It's like an abbreviation of pure (PLAY) sutei (STA-tion)

No, they don't have a problem switching.

The rule is, if it's written vertically, it's read right-to-left (like Japanese manga).

If it's written horizontally, it's read left-to-right (like a Western style book).

10. These girls were significantly older than me too. They were still wearing their school uniforms so I think they would just come off of school.

The part about the guys is a bit disturbing, if you were only ten...

Yeah, it looks like an online DC game called 'Sakura Taisen Online'.

It also looks like there's two different versions (like Pokemon red and blue maybe?)

Well, it is. I think the most disturbing part of being there though was seeing naked homeless men at the seawall on a regular basis. Some guys would just be walking and they'd stop, piss, and keep on going like nothing happened. Ugh, I'll never get those pictures out of my head.

I heard the Japanese have a huge thing for junk food, is this true?

Also, how many ex-celebrities are now famous in Japan?

How many commercials does Tom Cruise do a year for Japan?

How is the club scene in Japan?

Does the Yakuza have a big presence?

1.junk food, yes and no. they love/need fast and convenient food, the bread in convenience stores and even in bakeries has a lot of sugar and fat in it, they like soft thick bread but on the other hand you can get fast food onigiris (rice balls) and other relatively healthy stuff. the portions arent as extravagant as the us either.

2. ex celebrities..? i dont know some ppl are famous here but not in the us anymore for various reasons, long memories for example. the other day i saw emmanuelle the little kid appear on tv coz he did a song over here in japanese which was apparently huge. the japanese have their own ideas of cool too. at the moment orlando and johnny are in from pirates, brad is in edwin jeans ads and has been for yonks....

3. tom cruise i havent seen in any commercials from memory, he prolly does one or two but not enough for me to remember them, charlize theron, brad pitt and some others have regular ads though.

4. average in osaka (actually not so good), tokyo on the other hand is amazing from what ive heard having such a range you couldnt be an expert on them all. here is small with quite a few going off on a saturday (and to a lesser extent friday) and near dead the rest of the time... sucks really.. they also open and close to quickly here...

5. osaka is the yakuza town. ive got some friends of friends, ppl who hook you up with e's or whatever who are polly yakuza but they wouldnt ever tell you id say. they have little to do with gaijin lest it be those they sell mass amounts of drugs too (suppliers) or the iranians/middle eastern guys they get money off to protect them as they sell fake stuff on the streets. they apparently fight with some gangs from china and the middle east as well for territory...

The legal age is 18 and not 14 right?

Do Japanese ppl like to congregate in large packs and beat homeless ppl up? I’ve heard that it is a great dishonour to be homeless or even unemployed and thus they get severely beaten?

Some crazy dirty hippie degenerate told me that Samurais used to do the funky chicken with each other? It can’t be? Right?

homeless people in japan have pride... they won t beg for money. they stay quietly sat.

In nagoya for example, the city provides camp lodging for those who accept to work a bit for the city. They put papers in trashes, cans in proper bins etc.

In france you cross hundreds of beggers a day in a city like paris... it was quite astonishing when i first put foot in tokyo...no beggers

btw i ve never seen any homeless/unemployed beeing beaten in the street in japan... the only one beaten i ve seen was a teenager who said verry dirty things to another and a small fight happened, the insulting one kneeled down verry fast (a punch where it s verry verry painfull for men's anatomy).

about food... don t buy butter rolls in combini, it s disgusting... i ve never eaten bakery so fat ><. there are real bakeries though, and they make verry good french bread, croissants etc... it was quite nice to make my friends tried things they never thought to make (like croissant with cheese, ham, and a white sauce inside then put in the oven.).

About clubbing in tokyo: it s fantastic for the one into it... there are specials every week, and since there are a lot of clubs everybody can have the one fitting him. Personally i like Luners' in roppongi. It s not too big, quite simple, but the midnight/1am shows are verry funny (usually transvestites) and the DJs are often verry famous ones as guests.

I don't think Tom Cruise has ever done anything here. If he has neither my wife nor I have seen it...

DiCaprio has done cell phones and loans; Nicholas Cage has done pachinko (!); Cameron Diaz, Celine Dion, and Ewan MacGregor have all done English conversation school ads; David (and Victoria) Beckham currently do everything...

Yeah, unfortunately sometimes youth gangs go out and beat up homeless people, sometimes really badly. It has nothing to do with the stigma of being homeless, however, and everything to do with bored and violent morons running around in packs.

No, it's true. Homosexuality was an acceptable practice amongst samurai. It wasn't all samurai of course, and it wasn't something you had to do if you wanted to be a samurai, but there were some who did it, and no one looked down on the ones who did.

Kinda makes me think that things have gotten less civilized from the way things were back then...
