Remakes have been 100% disqualified. A bunch of tough cuts had to be made... and I KNOW I totally forgot about a few games. Such is life.
In alphabetical order...
Brave Fencer Musashi - Bought it for the FF8 demo... sat on the shelf while I started playing Zelda: Ocarina... decided I should at least try it before putting it away for good... never touched Zelda again... Yeah, not sure if it's top 10 material, but it was surprisingly fresh.
Final Fantasy VII - It's the reason I bought a PlayStation. Started playing this again a few weeks ago (by accident - just wanted to see how old games looked on my projector with the new cables I bought). The flashback in Kalm keeps it on the list forever.
Final Fantasy VIII - Had a lot more fun with this game after I finished it, actually. Besides talking strategy, I've never seen a game start so many different "plot theory" threads. My favorite? Squall was dead for half the game. Somewhat satisfying taken at face value, but goes as deep as you wanna take it...
Final Fantasy Tactics - I still replay this game. FFT:Advanced wishes it was 1/10 as fun. Maybe the best soundtrack on the PSX, too...
Panzer Dragoon Saga - Got it the day it was released. OK, my dad got it for me - sent him up to Minneapolis to pick it up at EB... they had one left. Such a relaxing game... with a story that's brilliant for it's simplicity.
SaGa Frontier 2 - like Brave Fencer, it's probably not top 10 material... but having given up on the first one, and giving up on the import version of this, I never expected to even bother with the US release. Love the intertwining stories of multiple generations... Just a big surprise "good game" for me.
Suikoden - Simply fun to play. Pacing is perfect, music is perfect, story is perfect... still, I can't help but wonder if the 2nd game should be on the list instead...? Chalk it up to nostalgia.
Vagrant Story - Besides being the best written game out there (period), the gameplay... No, it doesn't matter. It could make the list for the story alone.
Vandal Hearts - best "strategy" RPG I've ever played. Powerleveling is non-existant. The best you can hope for is using your resources (read: enemies) effectively enough to keep your party balanced. It's all strategy from there on out - truly a thinking man's game.
Wild Arms - call it the spiritual successor to Lufia. Hell, they stole the menu system - it's not like they even tried to hide it. Not sure if I could even be bothered to play this game today with it's slooooow load times, but it was my first exposure to the "next generation" of RPGs, and I liked it. It made the list mostly because it has the best "sleeping at the inn" music ever.
There we go... it's probably not the best the generation has to offer (not all of it, anyways), but it brought up a lot of good memories...
