Why was Guile so dangerous in World Warrior? I was always a Ryu user back then, and I don't remember playing any great Guile users.

Aside from having great normal moves and a nasty redizzy combo, the original SF2 version of Guile had some ridiculous computer glitches that let you throw a guy from across the screen, or lock up the game. Poke around some old FAQs and you should be able to find the info on the glitches, if you care to.

I can send you movie of guile's evil nasty dizzy combos. Many of these combos are extremely ridiculous.

I'd really like that, but unfortunately, I have crappy 56k.

Would you mind describing the combos?

Hey Spin, I'd like to get my hands on those videos if I could, please. I play the old SF2 and variants more than I do any of the newer SF games.

Guile's infamous redizzy is just jump fierce, close standing fierce, fierce sonic boom, backfist (fwd + fierce). This dizzies the opponent. Then throw a fierce sonic boom, jump fierce (opponent is still stunned from the sonic boom), close standing fierce, fierce sonic boom, backfist again. Doesn't sound too exciting, but it looked terrifying back in the SF2 days.

Usually it starts with a move that will put your enemy in the stagger animation like a jumping hard kick or a sonic boom from there you do combo then the game usually slows down well while the game slows down guile will bust that knee move where he jumps across the screen a little bit so instead of your enemy getting a chance to recover guile is still all over your ass. So while you are dizzying he is busting more combos preparing for you to get redizzied.

Its really nasty. I even think ST Akuma would have his work cut out for him if he went up against WW Guile.

I knew a Guile player that used to beast like that. Except he used to do Sonic Boom, then when you're stunned, do a flash kick when the slowdown is still going.

Unfortunately, he died in a terrible car accident 8 years ago when Alpha 2 was just coming out.

The glitches in question are...

Blackout- do a flashkick, but hit Fierce then Roundhouse quickly

Handcuffs- flashkick, but hit Strong then Forward quickly

Recuff (while in handcuffs)- magic throw with Fierce and Roundhouse

Magic Throw- charge db, push stick forward, pull stick back then hit Roundhouse, then quickly hit Strong or Fierce

Balrog freeze (only works on earlier boards)- When 'Rog jumps in be charging db, push forward and hit Fierce and Roundhouse together. (Also works on E. Honda on certain boards)

Drunken Monkey (Guile freeze)- pull back and hit Roundhouse (crazy upside down one), as the animation finishes throw a Sonic Boom. You must charge while in the Roundhouse animation. To get out of the freeze either do a Flashkick or a Sonic Boom from a db charge, or Magic Throw.

That's most of the Guile stuff I can remember from World Warrior, although there might be more. Dhalsim can so some wicked shit too

it's not just the Magic Throw that made Guile so good, it was pretty much agreed upon that he was the best character in the game before knowledge of the Magic Throw, Handcuffs, etc. became widely known. (Dhalsim was #2)

The one tactic that a lot of people seem to forget about is how Guile's projectile totally owns everyone elses. If you did a Sonic Boom and Ryu/Ken did a Hadoken, when the projectiles cancel out you had a good chance of being able to smack them with Guile's Standing Fierce backfist. The recovery is just too good.

And the flash kick did like... 20-25% damage every time? No matter when you timed it. It was a huge chunk of the bar. Damage in general was too high on World Warrior, on Champion Edition they tweaked it and lowered the damage on a lot of stuff, especially Guile's flash kick... making the Roundhouse one do two hits so it was really only useful as a combo, using it as anti-air was worthless.

I mean, how do you beat a turtling Guile in World Warrior? One who's just sitting there poking away with Crouching Forward and occasional Sonic Booms? Dhalsim had a chance since he could slide under projectiles or even trade hits with his long limbs, but hey remember he was #2. Anything Ryu/Ken needed to do to counter this was very dangerous. They could try Dragon Punching any pokes from the ground, sure. Although that's just going to get them smacked if they picked wrong. The Hurricane Kick did go over Sonic Booms, but what was the point of ever doing that? Guile recovers so fast that he can easily duck it, and if you guessed wrong and did a HK at the wrong time, you get flash kicked. Of course, nobody can throw projectiles at a turtling Guile, that's not going to get you anywhere. Obviously I don't need to mention that you can't jump in, either.

by the way, one glitch that wasn't mentioned was that Guile gets a free Sonic Boom after any Strong throw. Just hold forward on the joystick and keep tapping any Punch. Instant Sonic Boom.

(ahhhh, I feel old reminiscing about the lost art of Dragon Punching limbs...)

Man, this makes me want to practice with Guile now. I've always liked him, but I never got that good with him.

Why is Guile so dangerous in WW?

Jump FP, Stand FP, Sonic Boom, Backfist

That's not even mentioning the fact that you can set it up with a Sonic Boom.

Plus like BBH said, there's fuckin' nothing you can do against a turtling Guile.

I was about to say "what, nobody mentioned the four fierce". That four fierce redizzy has been the shit. I've only pulled it off in actual human vs human arcade matches maybe four times, but shit... do it, then get dizzy. Do it again, dizzy again. NOT FAIR.

Plus, like it was said, Guile has a great projectile. Fast recovery, and very slow if using the jab button. And it doesn't hurt that his character design is pure pimp, too.
