What was the first video game you ever bought for yourself? Do you remember what year it was?

I bought my first game when I was like 5. Metroid all the way baby. Every game before that had been a gift, but my birthday money had NES written all over it.

I was just wondering what some of you other guys' first purchases were.

Renegade NES. It was my brother and I's first chance to buy a game for our selves, and it was a toss up between Bad Dudes and Renegade. Renegade won out.

How in the %#$$@^ did you have money for games at age 5?!! I got about 25 cents a week at 5 years old...

Anyway, the first games I bought for myself were a Famicom with a Hokuto no Ken game, and a shooter I can't remember the name of. You floated around inside these space stations in a space suit with rocket pack, shooting bubbles and weird organisms or something. And you had to escape the stations before they self-destructed. I wish I could remember the name, but that game is long since gone.

The first one I can remember buying on my own was Metroid... I got it at the drug store for 20 dollars or so, but that was near the end of the system's life. Everything else that I got before then were gifts.

As for the first system I bought, that would be the Playstation, which I bought using money I earned from my first job. I bought the system, an extra controller, and Street Fighter Alpha... and when I brought it all home, boy was my mom pissed. :)

I had a Gameboy as my first ever console, and I saved up for weeks to buy Terminator 2 for it. My first ever regular console was a SNES and the first ever game I bought for that was Zelda.

I must own over 500 games now over various formats, but I never get the same buzz out of a new game that I use to. Maybe it's because I can afford whatever I want and that sort of takes the magic out of things. Those games always seemed so much better when you had saved for months to be able to buy them.

I guess having a regular job and income has it's disadvantages. :(

I used birthday money. :D

My dad sold cars at a Pontiac dealership back in the early 80's, so he made quite a bit money of money. I grew up with rich parents so I was given games every week. Now they are divorced and im broke, so now I have to work for my games!

My brother and I split on buying Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 when we were on vacation in Philadelphia, and spent the rest of the trip dying to get home to play it. :)

I don't remember the year, but it was whenever Pac-Man had just been released for the system.

I really don't know...

I'm pretty sure it was an Atari 2600 game. [I didn't get a Vic-20 until a bit later when they were selling for around 100$CDN ea.]

I`m not sure if it was Astrosmash, Gyruss or BattleZone but I know that I bought those by myself. ;)

First system I bought for myself (with money from a paycheque) was a Sega Master System.

Not sure anymore but I believe it was Blues Brothers for the Amstrad CPC 6128 (I had copies of game before and teh CPC came with Burnin Rubber).

As for the first videgame on a console : it was Chase HQ that I purchased at the same time as I purchased the gameboy.

The first videogame item I ever bought for myself was actually an SNES Core System (no packaged game) which I had for three weeks without a game (I kept renting games at Blockbuster) until I finally saved enough money to buy Street Fighter II.

God damn, I can't remember that far back!

Instead, I can tell you what my first SYSTEM purchase was... it was the Nintendo 64 on launch. A year later I had a Saturn and 6-8 months after that I had a PSX.

The first game I can REMEMBER buying for myself would be Mario 64, but I know I saved up money for SNES and NES games as well...

Something for the 2600 definitely, but it's been forever since then

I imagine it might have been Yars Revenge, or maybe that game 'Combat"

Damn, am I old.

Hmmmm .... I'm not really sure if I ever bought a game for the Atari 2600. I was pretty young back then. I think I started buying games when I got an NES. I think the first game that I ever bought was Castlevania, which would be cool I guess. But maybe that's just selective memory. It also may have been Ninja Kid, which would explain why I'm such a fucked up pessimistic bastard as an adult :D !

Oh, but I do remember the first system I ever bought, and quite clearly. It was a Sega Genesis, pretty close to its launch date if I'm not mistaken. I remember plunking down 200 bones of my Christmas money (that I was supposed to be saving for college or some shit), after heading down to Kay Bee toys. I got the system with Altered Beast as a pack in - and that fucking rocked :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: !

I've got a couple of old systems right now, but I've been really thinkin' about gettin' a Genesis system and grabbin' a few of the classics :D .
