The following is taken staight from the mouth of Dave Mustaine (originally post at www.megadeth.com by Mustaine 1/13/04):
I am also working on other material that everyone seems to know about, so I will confirm this:
1) Yes, I am in the studio working on Megadeth material old and new.
2) Yes, I did contact previous Megadeth band members Marty Friedman, Nick Menza, and David Ellefson about making a new record.
3) I was unable to accommodate Friedman and Ellefson, and sadly Nick, who was the most gracious and ready to rock, will not be playing on this new record I am doing.
4) Any talk of a reunion is wishful thinking.

New Megadeth Record
I started last year in October working on a new record and was unsure if it was going to be a Megadeth record or the first record of my career-post Megadeth.
But there was too much good music that was written during the Megadeth era that was left incomplete and unreleased that I had written and I decided to assemble that music first. It is frikkin' heavy and most people that have been around are surprised it was never released.
Regardless of being unable to come to an agreement with the RIP line-up, I am excited to say that Chris Poland is in the studio with me in Arizona, working on this new record. Vinnie Colaiuta and Jimmy Sloas played drums and bass with me on this record and I should be done somewhere around the end of March. Don't worry, they rip!

Chris Poland has returned?!?! This could be good, very good......

The only bad Megadeth album was Risk. Everything else shreds.

I've been waiting on some news about Mustaines future, and the rumors certainly were that he would produce a solo album this year. Apparently his wrist is in great shape.

Chris Poland returning would be awesome. I remember Dave Mustaine said something about how Chris had a fucked up hand that didn't work right, but it allowed him to do things with a guitar that a normal person found impossible to do. Chris' work on Killing is my Business rules, I love the Rattlehead opening.

Any Megadeth album that comes out, or solo Mustaine album, I'll definitely buy it, they are my favorite band.

IMO, Megadeth died after Rust in Peace.

Wha-wha-what?? Youthanasia and Countdown to Extinction = pure Megadeth bliss. If you ask me, Megadeth died when they put out Risk.

Anyway, this is excellent news. I'm still baffled how Mustaine couldn't come to an agreement with Ellefson. I mean, Mustaine practically made Ellefson. Picked him up off the street and made him a star. Perhaps there's more to the story I don't know, but that just seems way outta nowhere.

Now Marty I understand. Marty is more of a progressive style player. He got out of Megadeth because he was tired of the same writing, chugga-chugga, everything in E, etc. It's understandable that he probably wouldn't want to come back.

That really sucks man. Mustaine - Friedman - Ellefson - Menza = Legendary Megadeth lineup. Chris Poland is cool, and I think it'll be interesting seeing him back too. Hopefully he's clean and won't be pawning amp heads for dope anymore.

I was never really a fan, but this is cool news. Some of their stuff I kind of like. While I'm in metal mode, I just got Nile's "In Their Darkened Shrines" today... and man... wow. That is some fucking DEATH metal. Good shit, good shit.

can't wait.

The only Megadeth I didn't like was Risk.

Even though TWNAH was not that great... it had some GREAT stuff in there.

IMO... Rust, countdown, youth, and right now my brain isn't working.... ... but the album after youth.
Good crap... I can name all the songs, but I Cannot remember the dang title. *sigh*

Too much work. I am going to veg tonight.

ANyway... I am excited about the album.

It's ok blue, the album you are talking about is Cryptic Writings. I really like that album, its part hard rock, and part thrash metal. It doesn't just kill ya the whole way thru, I really dig Trust and Mastermind, not to mention the really great thrash tunes like Disintegrators and Vortex.

Ah.....Megadeth. I saw them live with Pantera in the early '90s in Dusseldorf Germany. They really put on an excellent live show and Pantera really complimented them well.

Wow Chris Poland is back huh? Very interesting. A while back I thought I read something about Gar Samuelson joining back up at some point as well. But that was a while ago.

Megadeth is one of my all time favorite metal bands. I really like all their stuff from Killing is my Business through Rust n Piece. Symphony was good for the most part. Then the sensitive mid 1990's happened. Metallica released "Blow My Load: A tribute to Johnny Cash", and I guess Mustaine had to do one up and go fuckin soft with his suck-o-rama 'Youthenasia'. Risk, and Cryptic writings were better... and his latest work sorta brings back some the old stuff... a sequel to Hangar 18... this song is damn good. I love song sequels anyway.

Glad to hear Dave M is back.

Heh, Gar died a long time ago dude.

edit - 1999, my bad, I always get his and Cliff Burton's death times mixed up for some reason.

I don't think there's a Megadeth fan alive who wouldn't love to see Mustaine, Friedman, Ellefson and Menza back together again. The 4 albums they put out were ture examples of Megadeth in their prime. I still can't believe Ellefson didn't come back. he was always the constant in Megadeth, besides Mustaine that is. I really wonder what went on there.

I'm pretty sure that Poland has been clean for a while now, I think he cleaned up sometime after Dave kicked him out.

Man, I can't wait to hear this new album. It may be the total return of Megadeth that the fans have been waiting for.

Sorry man, but I have to disagree. After Rust in Peace ,Thier music became generic, boring, and worst of all: LIGHT!. However, I never really considered Megadeth to be very heavy anyway.

I agree with you. I think they became a bit more mature, and melodic, and... domesticated. Dave and Dave jr got married, had kids, probably gone with the wife to Walmart to buy towels and dishsoap too many times. Even Vic Rattlehead went away for a while until his return in their last album.

I will always however have respect for Megadeth.

And dare I say, Megadeth > Metallica.

And I also agree, Megadeth wasn't that heavy, and although they proclaimed themselves as "The worlds state of the art speed metal band", I disagree. In fact, their drummers could not/chose not to do the famous Dave Lombardo 4x2x1 Double Bass, cymbal, snare speed that we all loved from Slayer.

What I do appreciate from Megadeth are their really good riffs, political subject matter, and mature outlook.
