Police Add Twist To Bait Cars To Catch 'Bad Boys'
Bait Car Uses TV Show Theme

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police have added a musical twist to the booby-trapped "bait car" that locks up would-be thieves who get behind the wheel.

The automobile is now rigged to play the theme from the television show "Cops" when officers remotely disable the engine and nab the crooks.

A videotape recently shot on the car's hidden cameras shows a man hopping in the driver's seat and muttering to himself, "I got me a good one."

He drives a short distance before an officer monitoring the situation from a remote location flips a switch that disables the engine and locks the door. Then, the car's tape player can be heard blaring the reggae-inflected tune from the television show's opening credits:

"Bad boys, bad boys/Whatcha gonna do/Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?"

The car has caught 10 thieves in two days of use last week, Lt. Marie Ballou said.

The arrests include a federal robbery suspect, four others carrying guns and one with a pending auto-theft charge, she said.

"We only put it out there once a month or so and for about three days at a time, but it's been effective," Ballou said.

Technology hidden in the cars, used by police around the country, allows police to monitor the vehicles, disable their engines, lock their doors and even remotely control their sound systems.

Columbus police put the bait car to use in July and added the "Cops" theme this month.

Car thefts have jumped recently because people are leaving their cars running unattended to warm them on cold mornings, police said.

"It's a problem we have every year in the winter," said Sgt. Larry Yates of the auto theft unit. "Just because your car's running in your driveway doesn't make it safer."

Bait cars are also used by Cleveland police, the State Highway Patrol and other law enforcement in the state.

Thanks for that, BM_U. Just what I needed to brighten an otherwise slow morning in the Warrant Division. If there's one thing better than thieving assholes getting busted, it's law enforcement mocking them in the process. Right on.:buttrock:

You just know some jackass is going to hear the music start up and start looking around screaming, "Oh fuck, I'm on TV!" :D

That would kick ass if the cops could make a compilation tape of their "greatest hits" and sell it as a fund raiser. :)

Man, that's one of the best things I've read in quite some time. It makes me wonder though, will they start to use other TV themes as well to mock the criminals? I could just imagine some ass getting into the rigged car, flying down the interstate and suddenly the engine cuts off and the theme from Three's Company starts blasting.

*Cues upbeat 70's music* "Come and knock on our door. We've been waiting for you..."

Or how about the theme from The Facts of Life?

Several years ago, we had a Judge here at the Municipal Court who was something of an antique buff. He had an old jukebox in his office, right across the hall from the courtroom. Every day, before the in-custody session, the jukebox used to play Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" -- clearly heard by all the inmates in the courtroom.:glee:

OWNED

I fucking hate theives, especially car theives, they should all be put to death. People who fuck with your car are the lowest form of scum on the earth, and I always laugh when I hear about people catching the crook and beating the shit out of him. I was on some Honda BBS, and some dude saw a guy from the window of where he worked trying to jack his car at like 2am (the dude had the door opened and was trying to hotwire), and the owner ran out, caught him and flipped out and beat the shit out of him with a baseball bat, fractered his skull and all sorts of shit, the owner of the car is now in jail and is getting sued by the family. they should give that guy a fucking medal IMO.

Man, I hate how the law works sometimes. It's like if a burglar breaks into your place and you shoot or stab him to protect your home and yourself, your the one who gets thrown in jail because you endangered the burglar's life. :oh_no: :very_ang:

I just cannot imagine what it would feel like getting hit in the head with a bat.... ouch....

OR what about the idiots who break into houses... and hurt themselves somewhere in the house....... THEY SUE THE owner for hurting themselves.... and then win.

I know it goes against the vindictive nature of the Wild Wild West, but this is the foundation of our civilization. One should not take the law into one's hand, and leave the justice meted out in a court of law. To mete out justice on one's own terms smacks of the old justice from decades ago in which the frenzy of the media and the fever of the lynch mobs put many innocents to death without due process.

We studied the whole "don't shoot the burglar" think in crim law -the philosophy is sound but it also makes you think about that Cypress Hill lyric:

"Say some punk try to get you for your auto,
Would you call the one-time, play the role model?
No, I think you play like a thug
Next hear the shot of a magnum slug"

Everyone should just make like the Chinese and learn martial arts or be like Spock and learn the Vulcan Death Grip to harmlessly subdue your would be assailant without breaking out a drop of sweat. Guns and other assault weapons are so illogical.
