Ok, you hardcore athletic types, I got some more questions for ya.

1. How do you deal with dehydration? I have started to experience this recently and of course would like to prevent it.

2. Do you take any kind of supplements for dealing with joints and leg problems?

I have been running now for about 2 or 3 months and slowly my stamina has been building up. I am still not to the point where I can continue to run mile after mile, but I am working towards that. Basically I run for a quarter to half mile (tops) then walk for a bit and then continue to run.

Currently I run 3 times a week, 3 miles each time. I run on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday and I practice Pilates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I run outside and since its winter here, usually its only around 20 degrees.

I bought a better pair of running shoes last nite (New Balance) and they have seemed to help with shin problems that I was having.

Any thoughts on this?

thx

Okay first off, you should be drinking alot of water ever day. The more water you consume, the less likely you'll be dehydrated when working out.

Secondly, your shin pains are know as "shin splints." Your muscles in your shins are knotting up and separating from your fibula. You can massage these knots out and if your really feeling some pain, run soft surfaces (grass) the next few times out.

Its awesome you've been sticking to your regimine, I know how hard it can be. Keep it up and have fun with it. Also might want to add some push-ups/sit-ups to your running and if your up for it some weight-training on your non-running days.

I'm thinking about taking up running myself. I work in a sporting goods store, so I can get a discount on a pair of shoes. I'm leaning towards a pair of New Balance.

All I drink is water ( I gave up pop and everything else nearly a year ago). I drink a lot of water throughout the day. Maybe the really cold weather is causing this?

Well, much of that pain went away after buying a proper set of running shoes. Sadly where I run there isn't alot of grass to run through.

Yeah, this is the first time in my life I have worked out on a regular basis. I am trying to make up for the last 10 years of letting myself get out of shape since graduating from highschool.

I have a long ways to go, but I look forward to it.

The cold weather definitely doesn't help. Make sure you warm up properly and don't go running outside in the cold right away. It can hurt your lungs and fatigue you faster. If you warm up a bit (stretching, push-ups, keep bouncing on your feet) and get the blood flowing you should notice a difference.

Keep up on drinking water. Soda and booze isn't all that bad here and there, but try to stay away from it most of the time ;)

I have to go soemwhere so I have to make this quik.

try to do some weight lifting with your legs so that you put less strain on your knees awhile running.
Drink a good amount of water when you begin running. as you become better you should not be suffering from dehydration.

also, keep a good sleep pattern. if you are one of those people who goes to bed past 1am and wakes up at 12 noon you are simply putting the cart before the horse by working out.

Yeah what they said

when you drink water you must drink it throuh out the day and not all at once right before you run. You need to keep drinking as you work out as well ( i am sure you know this)

Stretching is very very important but you must warm up first especially in cold climates. I would usually do a nice easy jog for 1/2 mile then stretch then jog a mile or so.

These next few tips will help your distance problems. When you jog you should try to have a nice stride dont be jerky and dont keep changing pace think smooth, Dont jog with your hands clinched in a fist, keep them open and loose. Last but very important keep your breathing steady. Breathing is very important you should keep that smooth as well. You dont want to waste energy on unnessecary movements.

Oh yeah, after you finish walk a few laps and stretch again. Jogging is mental as well as physical but you seem determind so you will do fine. If you have any specific question ask, hope this hekped

Thanks for all the tips guys!

I googled for some guides on running, but kept seeing people trying to sell me shoes and stuff. :spock: (already got that base covered)

Any suggestions on any special supplements to take? Like special vitamin type stuff?

@ genjiglove: They are New Balance CM435GT's. Size 11 wide :D

I bought them on sale (I guess) @ Dicks Sporting Goods for $40 plus tax. Quite the cool store for people into that kinda stuff.

Broken, just curious how old are you?

I commend you on your dedication. It's easy to fall off course. But if you stay on course, it can be the most satisfying feeling in the world. (I know)

I'm trying to get back into running myself. I felt pretty embarrassed when about 10 days ago I went back to my High school... and ran around their new track.

I only went 2 laps (half a mile) before I broke down and decided to go home and take a shower. 2 fucking laps. That's horrible. Now I was never the fastest runner in HS (best time was 8:26) but I was known for my endurance: no matter what I never stopped running. Once I started I wouldn't stop until the very end.

Hell, believe it or not I once ran 11 miles non-stop (44 laps!)

I need to slowly get back into it.
I admire your dedication.
Keep it up.

Amazing... that is too much! I personally have a *fair* endurance, but I am extremely fast when running short distances.

I run 3 times per week, 5 kilometers each time.

Regarding dehydratation, I drink over 3 liters of water a day, so I don't have any problems with that.

I used to run like a beast, but lately something has been draining my energy. I don't know exactly what it is, but I feel it's either:

a) some serious illness
b) a vicious cycle of 'less running, less energy, less running, etc'

Either way, I'm trying to get back on track but I just feel so weak lately. Hopefully its nothing serious.

For me, two miles a night [as long as its every night] is enough to keep my metabolism up and running so much so that I stay fairly fit.

I drink about 4 liters of water a day...dehydration isn't really a problem for me. Just flood your body.

I suppose the vital specs would help with diagnosing my fitness routine:

Age: 28

Height: 6 foot

Weight: Approx 200 pounds (my digital and analog scales slightly disagree on this - so average between the two)

Athletic Level in general: Zero (until recently)

I was never into sports of any kind while I was growing up. The closest thing would have been during my teenage years when I skateboarded. I stopped that someone in mid highschool.

I know I have mentioned this before, but I have lost a lot of weight in less than a year now. I started the Atkins diet (which I still practice, but I do eat more carbs now than then due to my working out) on March 1st of 2003 and lost a substantial amount of weight. Then around maybe October of 2003 it dawned on me that while I was losing weight, I wasn't picking up muscle definition. I was still out of shape, just on a smaller scale. I started my exercising in around October last year and started with walking several miles each nite. I was doing this to prepare my legs for eventually running. I started running around November. Eventually I hope to get my endurance to the point where I can continue to run. I don't need 6 minute miles, I just want the ability to run several miles without having to slow down or stop. But I figure this will come with time as I workout about 4 or 5 hours total a week. Between my running conditioning and Pilates body contouring, I am hoping that come spring or mid summer I can get close to this. Thats my current goal anyways.

Since March of last year, I have dropped 90+ pounds off my frame. I have lost nearly 100 pounds in less than a year and all of it without starving myself or torturing my body in general. I only wish I had started it years ago.

Its incredible too. Looking at older pictures of myself from just a few years ago, or my current license from just over 3 years ago, its amazing to see how much I have lost. I barely even look like the same person. Me likes.

Anyone have any experience with memberships at the YMCA? A coworker and myself is thinking about getting memberships and spending an hour or so after work a couple times a week down there.

Holy crap, you lost 100 pounds.
Just by exercising that routine of yours right? Run every other day and inbetween doing Pilates?
Goes to show you, with a little commitment anyone can lose at least 20 pounds in given time.

Just takes discipline...

No, I lost the bulk majority of that through the Atkins diet. Probably around 60 to 70 pounds was lost squarely though Atkins and the rest through working out.

But I ain't anywhere near done yet. I want to bring my weight down to the 170 to 180 area and increase my muscle with it.

Congratulations on the weight loss. It's so funny to see people who are like 260 lbs and are happy that they dropped to 258 pounds. :) Anyway, you really lost a lot, awesome job. :buttrock:

As for running, I used to run when I was in high school and it's better to go for distance then time IMO. Just don't kill yourself in the cold weather. :)

why do you use the metric system when writing on a board that has mostly AMERICAN members?
