Talk about shooters here.
You dont think Radiant Silvergun is good?
Think it's overhyped?
Hate R-Type's brand of gameplay?
Have a favorite shooter?
Post here.

I like Teh Shmups.
no, seriously though, I have not had a chance to try RS yet so do not ruin it for me.
I have been enjoying last resort alot this week though.
tell me, what are some of the best shooters for the saturn (beside RS and layer section). keep in mind that I also seek shmups that have aged well and are still fresh today. Thanks.

RS I thought was overhyped until I really got into it...so if you end up playing it, give it a second chance if at first you think it sucks.
Layer section is another awesome one...
Besides those?
Everyone seems to like Battle Garegga [sp?]...but I've never played it. I do LOVE Darius Gaiden though. The music is totally fucking insane with operatic vocals and crazy techno/orchestrated music.
Then there's the Gradius Deluxe pack. a deluxe pack of my favorite series? you can't go wrong there.
then there's the salamander deluxe pack---gradius' twin. basically the same game. the salamander pack has some amazing graphics...some of the best on the saturn, IMO.
then there's donpachi and dodonpachi. donpachi suffers from shitty load times and boring [if you ask me...] gameplay. but DDP is an amazing game...especially if you're a 'score' freak.

What about that one everyone talks of sougyrentai or sumpin (sorry, I have been drinking). It's the one that was sought after but got a re-release recently.
BTW, you boys gotta ge6t to bed. shit, i'm drinkin just so I can get tired as I have been having trouble getting to bed early.

lol yeah the only reason i didnt mention it is because off hand, i forget how you spell it.
its actually one of the best for the saturn. soukeygourentai? something ridiculous.
then there's thunderforce v...but i think it sucks.
there's another called blast wind, but i've never read a single review of it---only seen it for sale on ebay, etc.
batsugun is another...some people love it, some hate it.
there's all the classic "capcom generation" games also
BTW, if you haven't played Layer Section 1 [aka galactic attack in the US] you really should. its completely bad ass, and way better than LS2 because it sticks to 2D and does it amazingly well.
There's the cotton games...i think they're boring, but they've got a big following. i typically only like "ONE SPACESHIP VS THE UNIVERSE" type games...not "ONE WITCH VS A TREE"
Then there's the neo port of sonic wings...and strikers 1945 and 1945.2
Lots of good stuff...

-Radiant Silvergun
Unfortunately expensive, quality game w/ ace visuals, sound and gameplay. Perhaps too hyped up for its own good.
-Soukyugurentai
Dark feeling shmup. Tough as hell. Really cool
-Battle Garegga
thumbs up
-Shienryu
Bit of a Raiden clone, this one. Fun and adequately challenging.
-In the Hunt
Slowdown exists but still fun with some bad-ass looking bosses
-DoDonPachi
-Strikers 1945 Part II
-Cotton Boomerang
-Batsugun
-ThunderForce V
-ThunderForce Gold Pack 2 (TF Arcade and IV)
-Darius Gaiden
-Galactic Attack

Still pretty busy with Border Down atm. Very well designed game.
Man... I know that many ppl really love the game, but I can't for the live of me find my way through Ikaruga.
It's not that I wouldn't like it, I think it's one of the most stylish and well designed shmups of the last few years, but somehow, I expected something different. Oh well, guess I'm more into shmups where the main focus is to blow things up and get big points by surviving/one credit'ing it, a la Psikyo Striker-series, etc.
I just wish ppl would stop calling action adventures and all that 3D running-around-and-getting-bored stuff while using weapons "shooter". That's like calling stuff like Speed Ball 2 a sports game just because there's a ball involved...

if you want to get realy old school, axelay and un squadern are great snes shooters.
einhander for the psx is also one of the best ever, imho.

Bought Pysvariar on PS2 this week, from logging into chat and turning the PS2 on i had thew revision version beat within 10 minutes (probably less), which was very dissapointing. Having too many crdits on default is no excuse, though on later play i came to enjoy the game, even if the use of colour is TERRRIBLE and its woefully shortlived.
Could've been better,i prefer its "gimmick" to Ikaguras no question.
I don't think Ikagura is a bad game, not at all, i just really don't dig it, great graphics though:smirk:

Recently I have been spending most of my time with Pulstar and R-Type III. Both are way out of my league for difficulty, but for some reason I just can't stay away. I still haven't made it past level 4 on either game :( . If you are a fan of the R-Type school of shooters I would also suggest XMultiply on the Saturn (actual name is Arcade Gears: Image Fight and XMultiply). One of my favorite shooters on the Saturn.
19XX
Giga Wing
Giga Wing 2
Mars Matrix
All great shooters, everyone tells me that Progear is another good shooter, but I have yet to try it. And hell, while we're at it, let's go old school, Galga, Galaxian, Space Invaders, Legendary Wings, Vulgus, U.N. Squadron and ASTEROIDS.
1944: The Loop Master is a decent shooter, but I don't know what Capcom was thinking when they made it, 19XX is 100x better than it.
Carrier Airwing is fun, but it's nothing that you can sit there and play for a long time, you'll get sick of it after about 20-30min, you're better of playing U.N. Squadron if you want an older sideway's shooter.
Eco Fighters Ultimate Ecology is a werid as shooter, it's fun and all, but the story to the game will drive you nuts since the oold fart appears at the begining of each mission, you'll like the guns you get and the bosses are very creative.
Mars Matrix might be my favorite shooter out there, when the dificulty lv is set to the highest it gets, you've got shit flying all over the screen and you've either got to avoid it or catch it all and reflect it at the enemies. The grafix are good, the controls are great the game has a good chalange, better than most 2D shooters out there, this game is almost better than 19XX.

Man I have always got into shooters and heres my line-up from way back to now!
Gynoug (Genesis) *oddball favourite*:loco:
Thunder Force IV (Genesis)
Hellfire (Toaplan Arcade)
Raiden (Seibu Kaihatsu arcade)
Armoured Police Batrider (Raizing arcade)
DoDonpachi (Cave arcade)
ESPRade (Cave arcade)
Guwange (Cave arcade)
Stikers 19xx all (Psikyo)
Gunbird 1 & 2 (Psikyo)
'Radiant Silvergun' is a great game, but then with it's evolution into 'Ikaruga', aside from the awesome eye candy, its never really done it for me. Just starts to bore me trying to chain enemies, it’s like a little bit of the puzzle game bit has snuck into it and it just doesn't work for me. I just love the old school "against all odds" manic shooters!!:buttrock:

I prefer shooters from the late 1980's - mid 1990's...the newer stuff like Mars Matrix and Ikaruga just doesn't do it for me.
The one game that truly deserves a port to home console is Seibu Kaihatsu's stellar VIPER PHASE 1...I've had many great memories playing this fantastic game. It looks like I'll simply have to track down the boardset in order to play this at home.

PS rerelease of Soukyuugunrentai.
The in-between -stage animation is phenomenal.
PS2 Silpheed.
No bombs! Wonderful graphics, but no bombs! I can't handle a shooter without bombs. It's like a fighter with no special moves.

I wondered when someone was going to mention the Raiden games. I love them all, especially Raiden Fighters. I wish Taito would get off their ass and port them to a newer console.

Geez... I think the first shooter I freaked on was Gyruss. :loco: (Actually, maybe GORF, mostly because it had different levels and the speech... or possibly Asteroids... umm...)
Anyway, I tend to prefer many of the 16 bit shooters like Gates of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, the Star Soldier series, Spriggan (series)... Umm... those are all on PCEngine. ;) Anyone access to an Amiga or an Amiga Emulator, I used to play Hybris, Battle Squadron. For AGA/CD32 there was Banshee. All the Amiga games mentionned are available on Back 2 Roots (http://www.back2roots.org/) .
I like the newer shooters from the 32-bit (Saturn/PSX) to the current generations. Yet, in a way I almost feel like now that they simply try and pollute the screen with bullets and obstacles instead of meticulously plan the layout of the enemies and enemy fire. And I'm horrible at concentrating on multiple things at once, which is why I'm horrible at almost any sports video game where you have a team that's constantly moving (soccer, football). So instead of making it more fun for me, I just end up trying to look at all of the bullets and try and see those stereoscopic 3D pictograms... [Not that I could ever manage to really see those anyway.]
On the Neo, I'm partial to Pulstar. I like Blazing Star as well, but I guess I'm more into slower tactical shooters.

I'll second tsuka's motion by stating that if Cave were to port Guwange and ESP Ra.De to a home system, ANY home system, I'd shit my pants with glee. Especially ESP Ra.DE - even though I love Guwange and my eyes bulge at how good the presentation is, ESP Ra.De is probably one of my five favorite shmups of all time. And Dangun Feveron needs a port too - S.O.S! Can't stop this feelin'!
I'm still holding out hope that Cave will bring some of these to the PS2, but it's pretty unlikely.
On the original topic: while I like RS, and think it's a really well-designed game, it's one of the most incredibly overrated shmups. Ikaruga on the other hand (and just in my opinion) deserves all the hype, because it's fucking incredible.
In terms of fave shmups, I'm mostly a Psikyo and Cave person, though Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder would be near the top of any list of my fave shmups. Playing lots of Border Down lately.

I truely enjoy shooters from the the 16-bit era to the present. The new Shikigami No Shiro 2 is truely awesome, Cave is one of my favorite developers, and my deep love for RS goes without saying.
Liquid Snake

I love shooters on 16-bit ....
Aleste
Wings of Wor
Thunderforce II - IV
Gaires
Gradius II
Axeley
Target Earth
1941
Gate of Thunder
Lord of Thunder
holy shiiiit
that's TEH THREAD
whoa
I honestily don't know where to start
let's say first I usually like verticals the most
but I just love the Gradius series followed very closed by r-types
I liked border down too
but the sweetest discover of last year
was a game by Psikyo on Saturn
sengoku blade (http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67568&highlight=sengoku+blade)
I suggest everyone to try it
I consider Cave my fave softhouse
and Guwange and esp ra.de. their best titles
....althogh I've only played'em couple of times
being only on jammas and more of that I need an old monitor so to turn it on the side
I'm currently playing to death dodonpachi dai-ou-jou on PS2
and I consider the series as one of the best
progear no arashi is another top-notch horizontal shump
and is the only reason why I bought a supergun
strikers is another series I just like
as anything Psikyo(R.I.P.) has produced so far
as gunbird2, gunspike on DC
gigawing 1&2 and marsmatrix
even if quite short I really liked psyvariar a very understimated shump
hoping 2nd would be even better
I think Saturn and PCE are the best console in terms of quantity
and in some cases quality of shumps
for example Spriggan on PCE is just stunning
battle garegga on Sat
radiant silvergun
It looks like only now people speaking about this
cause is a piece of collection..it sells 150+ on e-bay
but where were all of you back in '98
when it appeared at the arcades??
It was the first time that mags speaking about TEH progressive shooter
where you start with you weapons completely discharged
and you're forced to play it more and more time
Guess I did something like 20+ of game
I also found almost every dogs
and yaea Treasure is another great softhouse
ikaruga is a technically marvel
although I still prefer RS
also megadrive had some really fine shumps
Musha Aleste above all
oh...
I forgot raiden fighters 2
maybe the only one can compare with Cave productions
edit:
forgot shikigami no shiro...I'm mad
and also thunder force series

Raizing/8ing developed this, Capcom just released it. Like Marz Matrix and Giga Wing were developed by Takumi and released by Capcom.
Wow, :multi_co: look at all the love for shmups. Personally shmups are my fav general. I was not expecting this kind of response. I was expecting "Axelay rocks! Best thing since Gradius" as most of these threads are (not that they are bad games it just seems like most people think after the SNES RS, Iky and the DC shmups are the only thing made.)
Currently Cave is my fave dev team out there. I am working on ESP rade for a 1 credit clear. I can get to the level 4 boss with 5.6mil with 1 credit right now. I got the PCB about 2 months ago. Unfortunatly my vert cab's control panel is disassembled and I need new parts. DonPachi is my fav shmup ever at the moment. Dangun is just a bitch and a half. I can not clear the level 3 boss on one credit to save my life.
Raizing/8ing is another fav of mine. Armed Police Batrider is a true work of art. One of the largest ammount of hidden/secret things in a single shmup (well, I guess with the 100 ships of r-type final that is not true any more, but that was not an arcade release). Dimahoo and Garegga are also excellent games, but Dimahoo is slightly better.
Pretty much the only arcade games that I collect are vert shmups, and MVS games. I think that while aiming for a 1 credit clear that ultimatly a shmup offers the most replay vale for your buck.
Kid Apex: Dude... load times, that sucks. It would discourage me too. If you enjoy the gameplay I highly recomend that you get the PCB if you have the means to play it.
On my to buy list:
Dimahoo
Guwange
DDP
DDP - DOJ (Once I get my PS2 modded)
XII STAG (")
R-Type Final
Gradius V
That should keep me busy for this first half of the year.
Subsequently I recenly compiled my top 25 shmups list. Divided into 5 groups (5 points is the 1st place group) and then in alpha order in that group. Here it is:
5 PTS:
Armed Police Batrider
Battle Garegga
DonPachi
ESP ra.de.
Strikers 1945 II
4 PTS:
Blazing Star
Dimahoo
DoDonPachi
Gunbird 2
Raiden Fighters
3 PTS:
Areo Fighters 2
Giga Wing
Gradius Galaxies
Salamander
Tiger Heli
2 PTS:
1941
Giga Wing 2
Mystic Riders
Section Z (NES)
Sexy Parodius
1 PTS:
Dogyuun
R-Type
Twinkle Star Sprites
Twin Bee Yahho!!
Vasara 2

Really? Well, good news;
Italian game publisher Halifax has brought 12 Stag (http://www.halifax.it/dettaglio.htm?ID=3753&divis=5&corr=35) to Italy. The multi-language release came to pass in December of 2003, with plans to release it in England this February. Thanks to Triggerzone for the news.
You should have no problem finding it soon.

Yes, and yes. I use to shop at lik-sang, but play-asia has cheaper shipping, and a better selection. They also have better communication and they are a sponsor of one of my fave news sites insertcredi.com :)

If you like Battle Garegga, let me suggest Battle Bakraid. It's developed by the same team, but I don't think a port was ever made. You'll have to track down the PCB.

I would recomend Armed Police Batrider over Bakarid. Esp right now. It seemed like the US was flooded with APB boards and I paid $120 last year where now it is found as cheap as $80. APB feels more like Garegga, while Bakaraid looks more like Garrega.
Anyways, it is all Raizing/8ing. Most of their stuff is topps in my book.

I am assuming that you understand there are far too many shmups to talk about all of them ;) But yea, I have never really gotten into Marz Matrix. It is a good game, but I have not sat down and gone "OK bitch your mine!" I really need to get back into Takumi shmups. Giga Wing 2 needs to fall in 1 credit.
And those othergames (Contra, Metal Slug) are Run 'n' Guns :) Love them too. All arcade style shooters are great.

You know you can rotate just about any arcade monitor pretty easily right?

sometimes you're an ass:cool:
but fuck yeah....very good question
usually people tend to think about shooters as....shumps
not very clear but all of you maybe get the idea
in the sense of a traditional vertical or horizantal shoot'em up
where "usually"an aeroship mowing down enemies
even if there're some eceptions
such as my beloved sengoku blade
where the main carachter is a flying chick
or something from Cave
ms and contra ARE technically shooters
IMO I wouldn't consider'em platforms....at all
for me platform is something like Mario
if I to find a word to explain them...I dont know
at least in english
edit:
now I know
run'n'guns

I heard it's kinda simple to rotate a monitor, the only cab I have is a dedicated MK2 machine. I play everything else with a supergun.

The majority of the "favorite" lists in this thread are largely "new-school" (32bit+) games...
Like I said, the "death" of the shooter genre has been greatly exagerated. The glut of quick money-run shooters passed years ago, but we're still getting a quality release every couple months. I like that.

Theres only one shooter that you need to play and thats psyvariar 2, itll be out on DC soon and it is quite possibly the best new shooter out there ive played recently (better than border down and Ikaruga)
As for saturn shmups, Sol Divide is fucking awesome and really unique with some rpg elements tied in (and no you dont need to know japanese) The deluxe packs are always the way to go, Cotton boomerang is chill, and my favorite is sengoku blade, its a bit pricey but an excellent game.

Mars Matrix is teh shit! It and Ikaruga are my favorite modern shooties, though I havent played Borderdown yet. The bullet absorbtion and regurgatation is -awesome-. And the totally insane amount of bullets onscreen is intense. My only gripe--and its a small one--is that I wish the game would move a hair quicker.
Other faves:
Lords of Thunder - Really, perhaps one of the most complete shooties ever. Great tunes, visuals, and the power up system. Most importantly just insanely fun.
Axelay - A lil slow, but a top fiver, IMO. Best shooter soundtrack, ever.
Download II - Maybe not be a AAA title, but very good. Final boss is deceptively hard!
Star Parodier - One of the best cute'em ups EVER. I never tire of using a PC Engine to destory enemies. Graphics are about as good as it gets on the PCE CD. One drawback: too easy!

Two more links:
Dodge the Bullet (http://kiken.sirkain.net/main.html) - Great site that covers a new game in-depth every now and then, at the mo it's Sengoku Blade. They had an awesome Ikaruga feature with stunning vids two months ago.
Shmups MK2 (http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/common_htm/main.htm) - One of me fave shmup sites with good reviews and other genre stuff.
About old school shmups, well, that's pretty much where it's at for me, that's why I love next-gen games like Border Down, they manage to transport a certain atmosphere that only the classic stuff can provide, R-Type, Salamander, you know the score. BD, Mars Matrix, they are advanced games with modern visuals but the same addicting gameplay as in the classics.
From the older shooters, I love Galaga, Gaplus, Phoenix, Defender, Tempest, Gyruss, then the late 80s games like R-Type and Salamander 2, and of course shmups from Psikyo, Cave, Treasure, Irem, etc.
Man, another shooter is on it's way for DC... the genre isn't really well atm, but it certainly isn't dead.

It's kind of sad- but one of the best ways to play shooters these days is on MAME
There's a shitload of shooters on MAME
I'd rather play on a console- but once I exhausted the Saturn and DC shooters I didn't have any new places to go- except PS2 imports-- and I have an un-modded, US PS2- so I'm screwed. I wanted to play the new DoDonPachi and Stag :mad_2:

My shmup system of choice is the Genny and, to a lesser extend, the SAT or PSX because of arcade ports like the godly Strikers 1945 II, I love that game.
On MD/Genesis, my faves are M.U.S.H.A., Gynoug, Thunder Force 2/3/4, Raiden Trad, Hellfire, Bio Hazard Battle and a few others.
Shooters also were my fave genre on Amiga, I played a lot of Hybris, Sidewinder, Katakis (R-Type), R-Type 2, Silk Worm (couldn't get enough of it), Xenon 1+2 and Phalanx 1/2... good times.... before that, the C=64 fed my shmup needs, mostly with arcade ports, but also with genuine masterpieces like Delta, Uridium 1+2 and others.

I'm surprised you have that in your top-10. I played it quite a lot and I like it, but IMO it has a few lengthy spots where you tediously hammer away on bizarre mid- or end bosses.
I have to admit that the game has a wonderful atmosphere and artwork, and the story is slightly twisted but works well, specially with all that dragon/bio mechanoid stuff.

heres some shooters i couldn't live without if i had to sell my shooter collection .
also anyone who plays shooters and uses more than 1 credit is a battyman!!!!
saturn
battle garegga -the don of the inbetween shmup manically fast but still old skool and the best raizing game for home console
dodonpachi- adrenaline induced buzzes from pink and blue bullets.once you click with the later levels you are hoplessly addicted
batsugun- manic fast bullets that are aimed directly at your ship.the most manic of all toaplan games and great fun!!
psx
zanac x zanac -amazing game ,great old skool feel ,great soundtrack and different enemy patterns every time you play
donpachi-much better than saturn but only good if you tate your t.v.
ps2
dodonpachi daioujou-more cave goodness with more bullets than ever mmm
also another fun title to look for is harmful park for psx a really great fun to play parodius style shooter .it's quite rare but recently i've seen copies go for Ł35-40 on ebay.co.uk so if you see it snap it up.
not many people know about it which is why i mentioned

Just dug up an old Megadrive/Arcade (or downloaded it....ssssh) called Air Buster.
First shooter I ever played seriously (Lifeforce being the real first, but I hated it at the age of six). Not particularly gimmicky or strong with any one type of "theme" but it is a very solid all-around shooter, especially the near perfect Genesis port.

try using the psx emulator, epsxe! i can vouch for it's quality, only problem is games are VERY pixelated if you run them in standard mode. But seeing as it uses it's own drivers, you can make them run in hi-res.

To answer your question AnechoicJinx, it's a much better port than the SS version. If you rotate your monitor it is even better. DDP for PSX does seem harder to come by, but you see it pop up on eBay now and then and some import stores that carry used PSX titles. After personally playing both versions, I'll stick to the PSX version (especially if you're more into playing 1P only and rotate your monitor, like I do).
I've been playing a lot of Gradius Gaiden for PSX lately, just to get ready for Gradius V. Other than that I've been playing Mars Matrix and Batsugun.

Nice to see someone with sense, people are usually blinded saying blah blah 2D Saturn blah. Yes for the fighters 100% Saturn, most other 2D titles are exactly the same, sometimes better or worse than Saturn, basically PSX is just as good for this, and there is more choice on the machine.PSX gets too much bad presss, unfounded.

Question about TATE:
Are there any other advantages for the full-screen vertical mode other than it filling the entire screen? Does it fuck up the graphics or ratios when it's compressed to fit a normal TV? I used to rotate my 20" all the time, but now that I have a brand new 27" I don't dare! I measured it and the 20" display TATE mode can practically fit within the 27" non-TATE mode....so I figured it would look exactly the same between the two...am I right?
I'm a compulsive perfectionist, I worry about these things :loco: :help:

Tate gives you that real arcade feeling. Plus in games like Shikigami No shiro 2, it's much easier to see bullets and such while shoot'in the badies! I always do the flip with a TV I have made just for it! Turn off the lights, and it feels like an old downtown arcade!

Yes, it does mess up the gfx with out TATE. Well at least with most of the 32 bit systems. DoDonPachi is one of the worst perpitratiors of this from my understaning.
Since you have the ability you should do a side by side comparison and you will see the difference.

One of my all time faves!!
For an 8-bitter (3Meg?), that game was awesome. Had some really cool tunes as well.
I have the Sylphia CD (PCE game), but I don't like it. I've heard it's amazing and rare, but I just can't get into it.

jingle bells jingle bells shooting all the way :)
i love parodius~ it s so funny and the music so great
my favourite is Sexy Parodius (japanese version), i own it on PSX and it is fantastic (no loading times or anything).
then it s IKARUGA, followed by coryoon
i can t give figures of the shooting games i ve played, it s just my favourite genre, just to give examples on my favourite systems
on nes i own games like Burai Fighter, Life Force Salamander, Star Force, 1943...
on pc engine & SuperCDROM2 coryoon, hana ta-ka daka ?, dragon saber, magical chase, Final Soldier, RType complete CD,
Star Parodia, Spriggan Mark 2
on sega CD: sol feace, sylpheed
on snes : super Aleste, Super EDF (yes, i do like it), UNSquaron, Parodius, Super RType, RType 3, Blazeon, Axelay and starfox
on psx : Darius Gaiden, RayStorm, GDarius, RType Delta, Sexy Parodius, Ray Crisis, Strikers 1945 II, cotton, einhander, thunderforce V
on PC: Tyrian, The REAP, GPolice, RayStorm (but playing the original PSX one on an emu looks better than it, despite it s Direct3D, PSX sony emulator syndrome, same as ray crisis and MGS)
on DC: sar gunner 2, gigawing, mars matrix, Ikaruga
on PS2 : sylpheed, gradius III&IV, RType Final (forgot it in japan :crying: )
and -stupid i am to have sold it- on neo of course: Alpha Mission 2 and Last Resort
i didn t like Radiant Silvergun, the fact you get all the weapons from the beginning and the poor game scenery (i ve played it last year only), plus the easy factor (finished in one go) made it a no pleasure game... i just ran though it because i had to, it s so famous, but it didn t leave any good memories...
but i loved ikaruga, verry impressive game :)
just building this little list gives me the envy to go back to my homeplace, switch on my old machineries and play through all of them again~
shmups are for me the games with the biggest replay value. you don t play to solve a mystery, you don t play to gain levels, you play just for fun :) shooooooot

Good lord, what is it with some of you people??!! How can you be so good at games that you just "run through" a game like RS on your first sitting? Fricking mutant freak gamers on this board here. The last boss of RS is a freaking beast, and I thought that the rest of the game was tough as nails too!
I also don't understand what's not to like, as RS is one of my more favourite shmups of all time, but hey, to each his own ;)

I'm a fan....although the SICKENINGLY butchered american box art makes me die laughing everytime I glance at it. If there's someone else in the room there's no shutting up about it for like 30 minutes :)
The game really does kick ass though. I especially like the weapon power up when you're extremely close to enemy bullets...
I'd also like some suggestions on perma-vert monitors...would it be wise to get a standard TV and just keep it rotated all the time? I've fucked up one TV by doing it back and forth...

Several options really:
Plasma TV with swivel wall mount (I've already got the screen and will do this later this year)
LCD TV mounted vertically.
Dedicated arcade cab
And other ways I haven't thought of. Personally, I like the first 2 the best.

nha, when i say in one go is not first try, first sitting as said before is better term, time to get the mechanics, and all.
i was with a friend of mine, all excited because we just got "the" radiant silvergun. we played it each one at his turn (after a life loss or a level change), and when the end came we were like "eh, that s all ?" ... i don t remember having major difficulties on this one, thus the easy factor since i had big problems on ps2 sylpheed last stage and especially the before-last boss (the one looking like segacd's last boss) and at ikaruga.
maybe i should give it another try like said the 1st post, but i have no real envy. maybe there are several difficulty levels, i don t remember and honestly don t care. like i said, i don t like the all weapons at the beginning system. and i hate the laser saber, allways, that was true in spriggan mark2, einhander, in sylpheed PS2 and is still true in RS.
[edit: and on the graphics side, honestly, i was waiting for a eye smashing 3D shooter... and it was an heavily sprites-based (before getting flamed, i talk mostly about backgrounds), with some verry rough 3D ... not a fancy game to me]

I have two old Commodore 1084S multisync monitors that I use for my Amiga, and a Philips CM 8833 multsync as well. These monitors are quite small (14" and 15"), but they have SCART/RGB and can be rotated at will without taking damge. These monitors are very cheap, < $50 if you look long enough. If you want something bigger (and more modern), LCD- or Plasma TVs may be the way to go, but I've yet to see a LCD TV set that does not blur on high-speed games. Plasma is much better, but also much more expensive.
On a sidenote, I wouldn't rotate one of those big-ass 100Hz TVs, it's no prob for the tube if you switch it off while rotating and let it degauss afterwards, but the pcbs inside aren't really built for this position, specially the heavier parts like transformers, etc.

I'm running vertical shooter PCBs via a supergun on a 17" Viewsonic LCD that pivots.
It also has a 16ms refresh for zero blurring.

I know... 14" is not very big, but since these multisyncs have a relatively flicker-free picture, I can live with the small size if I sit close enough. 14" in tate mode is better than 20"+ vertical IMO.
I had a 21" standard 4:3 TV (no 100Hz) that I flipped regularly but after a year or so the far left and right edges of the screen started to show strange colors due to magnetization. It got better after flipping it back but the color effect worsened when rotating the unit to the side again, up to a point where the whole screen turned reddish-green. Now the unit still shows faint reddish colors on the edges of the screen so it may be permanently damaged...
In short - I guess standard household TVs shouldn't be rotated at all, or if you have to do it, no longer than an hour at once.

Its "Gradius" at its core, similar gameplay, enemy patterns, power-ups, etc. But from what I remember, the bosses are pretty different.
The biggest change is instead of piloting the Vic Viper, you have a choice of piloting Vic Viper and three other ships (I don't remember the names) each with their unique set of power-ups. I just bought this game from Carlsson, can't wait til its at my doorstep.

Basically it replaces the Manual Powerup Settings of Gradius 3, etc with "ship choice"....really the same thing though.
Otherwise, the ships are all the same.
There's also a cool new Shield that works as a REAL barrier around your ship...you can SKATE along the ground and ceiling as long as you have it on.
Also, its sort of a blend of the Salamander/Lifeforce/Gradius universes...hence the other ships and the motley collection of enemies/bosses familiar to both universes.

what is your high score on 1943? You know it's not really the world record if it's not higher than the Japanese Gamest record...
1 million on Sinistar though?? sweet merciful crap.
I had an interesting shooting-game experience this weekend. There's a pool hall around here that has Strikers 1945 III, which is obviously one of my favorite shooters EVER now. So I stop by there to play a couple games, because while emulators might be nice there's no substitute for the real thing. I walk in and find that someone left a credit in the machine. On that free game I managed to beat the 1,144,700 score I left on the machine around two years ago with a score of 1,198,200. :buttrock: I was already satisfied.
I went off to play something else, and when I came back there were these two guys playing through the game. They seemed to enjoy the game, but weren't very good at it... using a lot of continues. One of them stopped playing while the other just kept continuing through to the end. Around the time he finally beat the boss on 1-8, he left the machine. I suck bad at the second loop so I just suicided his last ship and started a new game.
So, I'm playing it again. One of the guys that was playing watches me play, and when I beat the 1-1 boss I heard him say "Whoa, Technical Bonus" and called his friend over. "This guy is tearing it up!"
That guy asked me a lot of questions about Technical Bonus, medal chaining, all that stuff. He asked me what happens at the end of the second loop and I said "I dunno, I've never tried to go that far, I only play the game on one quarter. I can finish the first loop most of the time at least". He obviously couldn't believe that. And so I played on.
What a perfect time to finish the first loop on one life. :D :D :D
It was my best performance ever on the first loop. After destroying the last boss he said "Duuuuuuude! Props!" and gave me a high five. It was such a great ego boost hearing him tell someone else "I thought I was pretty good at this game when I could finish it on 5 credits, and this guy fucking does it on one life!" :D
(too bad I ended up completely fucking up 2-1 and lost all four of my lives there. :()
it was so great to see people who genuinely appreciated shooting game skills. I NEVER run into people like that around here.
And that is my story for the week.

My highest score on 1943 is 2,947,360...1 million points higher than the next highest posted score as tracked by the Twin Galaxies Intergalactic Scoreboard. The reason for such a high score? There is a 'hidden' point icon on the end of all of the battleships worth 100,000 points and that's all I can reveal about it. When I reported and verified the high score way back in 1988, a programmer from Capcom asked me how I got such a high score. I told him and he verified the 'trick' I found.

Okay... well, according to the list I have, the Gamest record for 1943 is 3,701,310. And there are two recordings at the MAME Action Replay Page that are over 3 million. 2,947,360 is still a great score though! Just not the "true" world record now. It's certainly better than me, I can't beat the last battleship. :(

I would recommend getting an LCD that has a 16ms refresh (these are fairly new; most tend to be 20ms or slower) and has a built-in pivot for an easy tate mode.
I would avoid plasma for gaming, since they are prone to burn-in and aren't well suited for videogames.

Funny but true story about Sinistar. The place I played it all the time was kind of frustrating me...I was dying way too fast on that game however over a period of time I was passing many waves in it. Then the owner of the arcade showed me the setting on the game...he had it on HARDEST!!!
Played a factory-set game and found that I could cruise through it easy. Went to another game room when I hit the 1 million score, then found out that arcade had a contest that gave the first person to break a million $100 cash!
Too bad I did it one week after the contest. Still, the arcade gave me $25 in tokens which to me at the time was as good as money :D
BTW this was before anyone found out the "win 255 free ships" bug in the game :smirk:

Well, it WAS 15 years ago since I posted that score :D
In theory, if you play a straight game without finding any hidden powerups and objects, you can score roughly 2,000,000 points. Finding all of the mounds and strawberries and barrels can jack up the score quite a bit. Also destroying the battleships causes an explosion in which four pieces fly up and are worth 10,000 each. The spaceman isn't a random thing. It's based on the order that the turrets and guns are destroyed on a ship (It's been so long I don't have a clue WHAT the patterns are...15 years, remember?)
As long as you don't destroy more than 70% (I think) of the battleship, you'll have to redo the level which you can rack up a few more points too. Holding down the A button after a level gives you a hidden weapon full charge but man, you don't want that lame-ass shotgun :loco:

For shooter fans tho, Harmful Park is an absolute must to check out, same goes with Gradius Gaiden, Raiden DX, and Zanac X Zanac. I'd also say the same for TSBv1, but it's a bit tougher to track down. Kyuin is visually amazing, but I find the gameplay somewhat bland and lacking. Still need to pick up Night Raid :)
Lotsa pixellated 2D in that list, eh? ;)

definitely i just wish more people sold games like these on ebay uk because no one checks for import psone games that much and the prices always end real low.buying from japan is best but you end up paying as much for the e.m.s as you do for the games themselves (if you live in uk anyways)
haven't really played kyuinn much but from the few levels i've played i had a laugh .
dedicated too much time to 1 credit the 1st loop of dodonpachi the last 2 months :blow_top:
i really want toaplan shooting battle but i play all mine on a chipped ps2 and i don't think it's meant to work on ps2s
someone said the same about gradius gaiden but the new psonebooks release works fine on mine

I don't remember who was asking, but Progear is really not too hard to find. The US version was only made on order, so there are quite few available. The non US versions are plenty available.
I would just ask PCB retailers if they can get it. Unfortunatly it is not a very popular US game. You should be able to find it for $350 or less.

Hmm, I've been meaning to pick this one up for some time as well. Less than $350 sounds pretty good, it's between this game or just springing for AvP, which I really want. :)
princecharles: your correct, TSBv1 won't run correctly on the PS2, it will play like it's in underwater mode (basically everything crawls along very slowly). I've been meaning to pick up a replacement PSone for that (kinda waiting for the screen & console combo to come down a bit in price). Also, iirc it's one of the later stages of Gradius Gaiden that the game has a problem with the PS2 (but from what you're saying it sounds like it was fixed for the PS books re-release... Have you played through the entire game without any problems?). I'll have to try that out with my copy (I got the first edition) next time I get back home. :)

Hmm, honestly, not sure exactly what price that kit would go for nowadays, maybe you can find someone who'd part with it at that price? I remember TRIEU had a Progear kit somewhat recently for around a similiar price, but I didn't look into it because the price was just too much for me at the time. Wish I could help you out there.

Yes, it was $600. Lose boards probably go for $250+?

BUMP for a badass thread :buttrock:
So, lately I have been playing DoDonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou alot. Kind of gearing myself up for ESPGaluda, and what I have realized is this. I suck really really bad at shmups, but I love them nonetheless.
Do any of you guys find this game hard as well, or is it just because of my lack of teh skillz at shooters? I'm ok for the first couple of levels, but then the bullet patterns escape me. The screen seems to fill up faster than I can keep up with, and I just get outpaced by enemy fire, and end up trapped in a corner with nowhere to go. Watching the DVD that came with the game makes me feel even worse. The guy playing in that vid is sick! He combos into the 2000s, and I can't even get up above 800 :(
Anyone else think the game is tough, or just me....?

I'm the same way with most shooters. I too love them to death but I'm often not good at them. I feel the same way you do most strongly with Guwange and Dimahoo which I've been playing a lot lately, especialy Dimahoo which gets mega insane in the later levels. Although Psyvariar 2 is quickly niggling its way into my mind for IMMEDIATE purchase, and I seem to be fairly good with its type of mechanics.

I was seriously considering Psyvariar 2, but I've been hearing alot of so-so or just straight up bad things about it. I don't know wether to believe the anti-hype, or just try it for myself. Seeing as how I have other things to buy at the moment, and $60 bucks is alot of money to me right now, I think I'm going to wait for a price drop. Possibly pick it up used here at n-g.com :)
I love Gunwange, I wish it saw a console release. That seems to be a nagging problem with alot of Cave shmups :(

Yeah, its formatted just like a Cave shmup, developed by a group called Raizing/8ing and published by Capcom (I think, those details are a little fuzzy, but it is nonetheless a CPS2 game). Its a blast to play, but for some reason just damned difficult.

While shooters are my favorite genre, I don't particularly enjoy Cave games. They're too manic and goofy for the most part. Personally, I'm all about GREASEY STEEL SHIPS like the VIC VIPER blasting through armadas like butter to orchestras swelling or guitars wailing. The fruity approach Cave [and others] take turns me off a little....but they're still amazing games that're better than most shit coming out nowadays.
PLUS, DDPDJO has the BEST music ever. Second stage fires up and I orgasm.

That's whats so great about shmups IMO. All of the different kinds that are around. I'm personally just the opposite of you. I love the classics like Gradius, R-Type, Last Resort, and whatnot...but Cave are Gods IMO. I love their "fruity" style ;)
I am definitly in agreeance that the music in DDPDOJ is the fucking best in a shmup ever! I love the artwork as well. I'm assuming that is part of the "fruityness" that you are reffering to ;)
Either way, I will play any fucking shooter, regardless of type or maker.

This is like the thread that will not die.. I love it.
Anyways I would have to say that currently R-Type final is my drug of choice. Gradius is still my childhood love. ESPrade is still my adiction. Raizing is still my bitch.
All these different games offere something unique that you can not find anywhere else. My fav company would probably have to be Raizing/8ing. They just seem to have hit the sweet spot between manic and tactical.
I highly recomend that you use every game for what it is best at.
Cave: Scoreing systems
Raizing: Rank Management
Konami: Strategey/Power
IREM: Strategy/Technique
Takumi: Reflection
They all have their ups and downs and all are wonderful.

No, sorry. The only people associated with DOJ is Cave and then Akira published it.
Technically 8ing only put out one solo shmup: Battle Bakaraid. The more you know.
Dimahoo was the first game to use a color management system, not Ikaruga. The more you know.

Sorry that I missed this earlier. You may want to contact Coin-op Express (http://www.coinopexpress.com/products/pcbs/capcom_cps_ii/Progear_Storm_of_Progia_259.html) as they seem to have a reasonably priced copy in stock. Also it is odd that they use the English name of the game not the jp name. It may mean that it is the US version of the game.

So I had a chance to play Psyvariar 2 at Kid Aphex's place today, albeit fairly briefly, and I'd have to recommend this game for immediate purchase for any shmup fan. It seemed a little on the easy side (I say that as I got my ass handed to me, it seems like with a little practice it would become easy) but honestly the buzz system is the most addicting play mechianic I've yet to come across in shmups.
Oh, and the music was fuckng ACE.

Bit of a Raiden clone, this one. Fun and adequately challenging.

-Cotton Boomerang
-Batsugun
-ThunderForce V
-ThunderForce Gold Pack 2 (TF Arcade and IV)
-Darius Gaiden
-Galactic Attack

Yeah, I'm also playing Psyvariar 2 a lot and it's addictive like crack... very nice game, I'm glad I purchased it. Can't say it's too easy on "hard", tho. :) ... about the music, well, guess it's all a matter of taste, it's not too good IMO but it's also not really bad so I'm cool with it.
Now I'm waiting for the DC release of Castle of Shikigami 2, hope it's better than the first part...
I've also been playing Gradius Gaiden on PSX a lot lately, I love that old-style powerup system, and the graphics are really cool. Some prefer the old 8-bit versions or G3 on the SNES but this version is my fave.

Eliminate Down for the Mega Drive
Old school horizontal scrolling, three weapons on the fly, three levels of power, and some sweet music on the Mega Drive! A must play, but the game is a bit hard to find, and not cheap!

Radiant Silvergun, outside of the incredible soundtrack, will often be underestimated by gamers because seriously,
all hard shooters are the same
But when you really get into it, and study the master videos to get down your technique, you realize how incredible the game is, and how underdocumented it is.
Forever Sublime and I sat down studying the t-wizard video and going through the game trying to do shit, and realized that the game is really deep. So much goes on that you may overlook while just trying to survive. All the points to be earned...
As for my favorites, the list is immense. My all time favorite is 19XX though. I know it's probably not the best game evermade, but the nostalgia of playing it in the arcade all the time still lingers. ;)

Ah yes, shmups, one of the finest genres in the industry.
Back in the day, I remember playing Lifeforce over and over again with my friends. At that time, there weren't many co-op games, especially quality ones such as Lifeforce.
For a time I completely forgot the genre. During the 16-bit era it was all about the arcade ports and sports games for the Genesis, and the remakes and rpgs for the Super Nintendo. Shmups, just got lost in the fold. But then the 32-bit era hit, and I was quickly reminded as to how great shmups can be.
Radiant Silvergun presents one of the finest soundtracks to grace a human's ears. DoDonpachi has the most co-op-friendly gameplay of the lot. Ikaruga has awesome level design and attack patterns. Winds of Thunder has great bgm (I wish there was a soundtrack :( ). And Shikigami No Shiro 2 reminds me that the shmup genre isn't dead, and that we can/should expect great things in the future.
Kid Aphex

Shooters definitely possess a level of depth that's often overlooked by those that aren't obsessed with the genre.
I understand how crazy Silvergun is, because for the life of me, I can't beat it. I could never hope to 1CC it...the end of the 3rd level is literally too much for me to handle.
But Ikaruga? Wow. There's just so much to that game.
While watching videos is great in its own way...I only rec' it after you've played the game and feel you're at a hill you just can't climb...too many secrets and tactics are revealed in most shmup-replays to me, and it ruins the experience of nailing that first 90+ chain in level one, for example.
If you want my honest opinion, Ikaruga is the finest shooter ever made.
Ikaruga is a shooter, a puzzler, and a canvas with which you can express yourself on any given day. It, like Tetris, NEVER GETS OLD TO ME. I just played it FOUR hours straight, looping the first two levels to further master them, and I'm already craving more.
Ikaruga or Vagina? I just don't know anymore.

I played it SO MUCH at E3 last year. I must've played through the first two levels at least ten times. So did Sean [Buro] and seriously...the Konami rep monitoring GV got to KNOW us from the frequency of our visits. It was easily game of the show last year.
Co-Op, unlike other Gradius', seems to be FUN instead of a chore.
If you know Gradius [which I'm sure you do, this is for those who don't] you'll know that two player simultaneous play was never a part of the series...but in this game, its not only there, its genius. Creating sweeping laser layers with one characters Options while the other creates a protective barrier for the two of you with his Spinning Options is nothing short of genius. The game is GOD LIKE. Creating sweeping laser layers with one characters Options while the other creates a protective barrier for the two of you with his Spinning Options is nothing short of genius. The game is GOD LIKE. Shooter of the CENTURY. SHOOTER OF ALL TIME.

I played it SO MUCH at E3 last year. I must've played through the first two levels at least ten times. So did Sean [Buro] and seriously...the Konami rep monitoring GV got to KNOW us from the frequency of our visits. It was easily game of the show last year. .
That is right, I forgot how freaking long ago this was announced. Anyways diden't Treasure say they scrapped almost everything since that build? Sorry for the bullshit call I now recall people posting here while at E3 last year about the game.

But I'm a pretty big fanboy of the series, so I doubt I'll ever get tired of it.
Really, I don't think you quite understand. Treasure, my absolutely FAVORITE developer, gets the KEYS to the VIC VIPER?! It was like a DREAM COME TRUE---and when I heard the news, I started to believe reality was nothing more than an extension of MY MIND.

It's almost more like they got the keys back...since likely the folks that originally left Konami to form Treasure probably were the ones who made the first couple installments (along with Contra of course). I've been looking forward to this game for a long-ass time myself, and I really hope it delivers. At least there's finally a date for the import.
I can only hope this entire project is successful from a sales standpoint, since it may lead to other things...can you imagine a Contra done by the real masters?

Currently playing on the daily:

- Psyvariar 2 DC
- Castle of Shikigami No Shiro II DC (easily one of the best shooters yet)

Still need Bangai-O and Mars Matrix for DC.
As for someone stated earlier which system to get Shikigami II for, if you have a DC go for it no questions asked. I heard there arent really differences and their all good, I still think DC is the better shmups system. The whole anti-aliasing vs. no anti-aliasing thing has always left me lovin the DC much more. The PSX versions of Donpachi and Dodonpachi were better conversions.
And yes, I actually think the PS2 is on track to overtake the Saturn with regards to number of great shooters. A lot has already come out, and we're just waiting for the library to expand with stuff like ESP Galuda, and other multi-platform releases.

Oh, sure:

2. New graphics enhancements for the baddies (new colors added and such)

4. Smoother use of "Wait"
5. Higher resolution

Games like ESPRade, ESPGaruda, and Ketsui are straight Jamma correct?

I'm pretty sure that all Cave boards are straight JAMMA.
By system do you mean arcade or home? For home system, I thought I'd never say this, but the PS2 has become THE shmup system over the last year - way too many great shooters for a spirit-less next gen rig.

From my personal experience, regarding Pro-Gear.
For a green loose board around $250+shipping.
Now for a blue board, I actually have never seen a loose one, but I can

Yes of course, the games look and play much smoother in Tate mode because they were made for that. I also hate those huge black borders left and right if you play a v-shmup in normal mode. AFAIK this is also called panorama mode or something, at least the PSX Raiden collection has something like it.
I have a small 15 yrs. old Philips MultiSync rgb monitor for vertical shmups with Tate option that doesn't mind rotating even if it's running, there are no magnetized color rings or anything.
Once I also rotated my big-ass Toshiba but it's really not a good idea to do that, tho I loved playing Ikaruga (DC) and Strikers 1945 II (PSX) on it.... really phat
About the best system for shmups, I guess the ranking list would look something like this:

3 - PS2
4 - DC
5 - PSX
6 - PC Engine/Duo

On the first try I placed the PSX after the PCE but as much as I like most Engine shmups, there simply are too many great 90s shmup ports available for the ol' Sony box.
Mega Drive is another beast... on a personal fave-shmup-systems list I'd rate it even higher than the PCE because of games like MUSHA, Raiden Trad or the ThunderForce series, TF IV still kicks, hard as nails but cool as hell.

None the less here is what is on my plate:
Darius R (Finally done with this 1LC)
R-Type Final (Working on a solid level 4 boss pattern)
DDP: DOJ (Sitting at house, waiting for modded PS2 in mail :D )
ESPrade is in my Vert cab, but I really am just messing with this now. After level 4 I am pure crap. I have not beat level four yet on 1C, but I can get to the boss on a good day. My skills are still weak.
too_short: I unfortunatly have a TV that is not tate-able. It is large enough that un-squashed games in yoko mode look larger than my 25" monitor does tate-ed :) Unfortunatly if there is pixil shrinking it looks all distorted and messed up. Also DDP 2 Bee Storm is decent, better than it is givin credit for many times. Honestly it is just the DDP name on it that I did not like as it would have been better just looking like a DDP ripoff and having been called Bee Storm. It just does not feel like a Pachi game at all.
About PGM stuff it is the same hardware for Ketsui, DDP:DOJ, and ESPGaluga too, but they are just dedicated boards running the PGM hardware (similar to the MVS Jamma boards as of late). The hardware is more than capable, don't be tricked into thinking that a cart system will hold it back.
