I have a TV dedicated to Tate mode, and my JAMMA boards!

Lately I've been buying Genesis shooters from left to right.

Recently I've been playing Thunder Force II, Arrow Flash, and Insector X.

That is correct, they are Straight JAMMA. I have an almost complete Cave collection, and the only 2 that are NOT Straight Jamma is Arashi No Progear (CPS2), and DonDonPachi 2: Bee Storm (IGS PGM, but technically made by IGS).

Nice. So this means plug & play on a massystems supergun...?
I have pro-gear & DDP2 is on its way ( I know the PGM systems = carts).
Thanks for the answer.

As for loopz, understandable. Not everyone has the space to keep all
the boards.

Or the money. How much is, say, a Guwange or Pro-Gear board?

From my personal experience, regarding Pro-Gear.

For a green loose board around $250+shipping.

Now for a blue board, I actually have never seen a loose one, but I can
tell you that Blue US kits go for at least $600+
The blue version of this game had a very small run, under maybe 50
pieces according to Vinh.

OK, that's not as bad as I thought. If I had a SuperGun or a decent cab I'd splash out for a Pro-Gear board. MOTW cost me more anyway...

Yep, you should have no prob with your Mass set. I use a Sigma for all my arcade stuff, and I have yet to run into any problems.

By the way, you'll love Bee Storm. It gets lots of hate (mostly from people who have never played it), so ignore it. I've had it for some time, and it might be my fave in the DonPachi series. Plus, there are some nice secret tactics to discover, but I won't spoil it for you!

Guwange will run you in-between $200-250. WORTH EVERY PENNY! This is the vertical shooter to own.

Cool, thanks for the heads up on Bee Storm.

Yes of course, the games look and play much smoother in Tate mode because they were made for that. I also hate those huge black borders left and right if you play a v-shmup in normal mode. AFAIK this is also called panorama mode or something, at least the PSX Raiden collection has something like it.

I have a small 15 yrs. old Philips MultiSync rgb monitor for vertical shmups with Tate option that doesn't mind rotating even if it's running, there are no magnetized color rings or anything.

Once I also rotated my big-ass Toshiba but it's really not a good idea to do that, tho I loved playing Ikaruga (DC) and Strikers 1945 II (PSX) on it.... really phat

About the best system for shmups, I guess the ranking list would look something like this:

1 - Arcade/gun
2 - Saturn
3 - PS2
4 - DC
5 - PSX
6 - PC Engine/Duo
7 - MD
8 - other

What do you guys think?

I think you've hit the nail on the head. You could argue for the PCE to be higher though, because there are SH*TLOADS of shooters out there for it ;)

On the first try I placed the PSX after the PCE but as much as I like most Engine shmups, there simply are too many great 90s shmup ports available for the ol' Sony box.

Mega Drive is another beast... on a personal fave-shmup-systems list I'd rate it even higher than the PCE because of games like MUSHA, Raiden Trad or the ThunderForce series, TF IV still kicks, hard as nails but cool as hell.

Would you mind holding it until I get back from vacation (3rd week of May)?

I need to get a BG board, might as well be from you.
As of now my BG board is on hold. :)

None the less here is what is on my plate:

Darius R (Finally done with this 1LC)
R-Type Final (Working on a solid level 4 boss pattern)
DDP: DOJ (Sitting at house, waiting for modded PS2 in mail :D )
ESPrade is in my Vert cab, but I really am just messing with this now. After level 4 I am pure crap. I have not beat level four yet on 1C, but I can get to the boss on a good day. My skills are still weak.

too_short: I unfortunatly have a TV that is not tate-able. It is large enough that un-squashed games in yoko mode look larger than my 25" monitor does tate-ed :) Unfortunatly if there is pixil shrinking it looks all distorted and messed up. Also DDP 2 Bee Storm is decent, better than it is givin credit for many times. Honestly it is just the DDP name on it that I did not like as it would have been better just looking like a DDP ripoff and having been called Bee Storm. It just does not feel like a Pachi game at all.

About PGM stuff it is the same hardware for Ketsui, DDP:DOJ, and ESPGaluga too, but they are just dedicated boards running the PGM hardware (similar to the MVS Jamma boards as of late). The hardware is more than capable, don't be tricked into thinking that a cart system will hold it back.

I'd like to get a tate-able monitor---lcd, sleek looking, etc.

But you know, they usually look like ass in your living room.

Cool, didn't know they were PGM jamma boards.

The only Cave game that is a PGM cart is Bee storm. Ketsui and all others are JAMMA PCB's

Gotta concur here. One of my most-played MAME games. Guwange is truly awesome....such a cool ass original theme, great music, well-planned difficulty.
If I had a cab I'd try to find it for sure.

after getting the modded x-box, I have learned that Cave is probably the greatest game making company around right now.

The Donpachi series, Guwange, Progear, everything

Damn straight. Can you name any other company that's brought out so much 2D goodness the last five years? These games remain damn near totally unnoticed too. Cave fucking ROCKS.

A modded XBox wwould be cool, but I don't even have a TV right now.
I lost it in the 'divorce'. My PC with PS-to-USB adaptor is more than sufficient.
BTW....Radiant Silvergun (via Titan) support is the next big gem that will be supported in MAME. I dunno if the XBox will be powerful enough to run it though...

Since we're on the topic of Cave shmups...

Can anyone actually play DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou like the guy on the DVD?

I have been playing this game nonstop for months now, and I'm still shitty at the damn thing. I can't combo above 700, I can only get to stage 3 boss on 1 credit (on normal level w/ 5 ships :( ), and I can't point higher than 16 million! When you guys play how do you compare to my low ass scores and combos?

It seems that I can't continue the combo sometimes when I think I am doing everything right :spock: Maybe my transition into the beam-shot is too slow?
