Problem with an Xbox

A friend of mine bought a new Xbox after his broke down on him. I took his old one, thinking I could somehow fix it, or maybe mod it. The problem is, when you try to turn it on or open the disc drive, it makes a beeping noise and the little green light around the eject button flashes yellow and green.

Does anyone know what the problem could possibly be? If it's not easily fixable, I'll probably just throw it out.

Hook it up audio wise and see if you hear:

"this Xbox will self destruct in 15 minutes"

If I remember correctly that means video error (the differnt color flashes mean different errors) Check www.xbox-scene.com to find out error colors

Mine use to beep as well, but for some reason when I opened it up and started running it, It stop beeping. Also Yellow and Green means there is no Audio/video hooked up to the xbox.

If it's Red and green thats when you start freaking out.

CD ROM Drive error I think.
Which could be an easy fix. I had the same problem with a moded Xbox. I would open it up and get into where you can access the Lazer Eye. Take a que tip and some rubbing alcohol. Dip the que tip make sure there is not too much alcohol on it but enough to clean with and do a circular motion on the eye for about 30 seconds. put a game in and the lid back over the rom casing and see if it will run.
Worked fine for me.

I also have a problem with my X-box. It's taking up all that space but never wants to pay rent. WTF, last check came in the form of Halo and that's been 3 fucking years!

So could you not get the Xbox to open when you pushed eject either?

If it IS the DVD drive and you want to try to clean it on your own, this site has all the info you would need to do so.

If after cleaning it you still can't get the drive to work, then you can buy replacement drives from the same place. Are they any good? No clue as I've never had to do any of that stuff.

Hope this helps.

I red a post, doing a search for you, that said someone was able to fix this by turning the TV off, then booting the X-Box, then turning the TV on. Sounds like BULLSHIT to me, but WTF, what's it gonna hurt?

No problem. Hopefully it helps. Then again, you got it for free, so it's not all bad :D

I say try to get it to work well enough so that it passes inspection at a store that accepts trade-ins.

uhm when it's red and green. That doesn't mean the DVD drive. It's probably the bios.

What does that mean, exactly? And more importantly, is it fixable?

BIOS is likely hardwired to the motherboard, so it's probably not fixable without swapping the motherboard. This is speculation on my part as I've never taken an X-Box apart to look at how it's setup.

Then again, I think the mod-chips people can add to the X-Box replace the original BIOS, so maybe you can repair it by installing a MOD Chip?

If you really want to get a free X-Box, go the EB or wherever, buy an X-Box. Take a hard drier and run it on the bottom of the new system to remove the serial number sticker. Do the same for the old X-Box. Now put the dead X-Box with the new serial number back in the box and return it as defective. Only do this if the system was never modded so you don't into trouble or whatever.

did this when the Dreamcast was released in the states. I wanted to run US games, and since there was "NO WAY" to do it, i just turned in my JPN console to Target.

You either get it fix by Microsoft which will cost alot or Mod it. Modding it will replace the original bios with a new one. The ONLY problem I see is that you can't get on Xbox Live.

That is incorrect. You can get into Xbox live wih a modchip. Just make sure it is off.
