After the slight misunderstanding between JHendrix in the Capcom thread, it brought up an old question that I had forgot about, but to me has always nagged at me. AND THAT IS...

Which title for the two different respective franchises of Final Fight and Street Fighter do you think works and sounds good? I ask this because I remember some time ago in late '97 reading an article that before Capcom made the game Final Fight they had actually dubbed it Street Fighter '89 for the year it was in development. At that time only the original SF game with the weird punch buttons and some with the 6 button layout was out, and it wasn't nearly as popular as later installments.

and by the way I look at things, well... "How much STREET FIGHTING really takes place in the SF games?" Most of the people in the game all are bad asses at some form or another, I believe "Jack" from AOF would best represent brute force Street Fighting, not the plethora of forms/styles we all see in the SF games... while on the other side of the coin, CAPCOM made a roving beat em' up called Final Fight that actually had people in a literal "Street Fight"

So to me I think I'd have rather the games we know as "Street Fighter" have been called FINAL FIGHT and the Final Fight games be called Street Fighter. Yes we've all grown accustomed to what is, but how much sense does it really make when you take a step back and really look at it? It doesn't. We'd have had...

Final Fight
Super Final Fight
Final Fight Zero
Final Fight EX Plus Alpha
Final Fight III: Third Strike

and so on, and I don't believe it would have been any less successful and would have made a lot more sense. So what do you think? DO YOU LIKE THE NAMES "AS IS" for the respective series, or do you think like me?

Then you would have people bitching like they do about Final Fantasy.

"OMG, it's the eleventy-seventh game in the series to have the word 'Final' in the title, I just don't get it!"

They're both cool titles for the premise of each game, and I think the respective titles fit better with each game series.

I voted SF though, as I feel it fits a bit more than Final Fight does.

Pretty deep man.

What if C-A-T was actually spelled D-O-G?

Not arguing bro, but I have to ask WHY? *I see BMU's point no doubt, but after the Champion Edition of what would've been called Final Fight people would have just accepted the title and went along for the ride. **I mean let's look at games like Final Fight and Bare Knuckles... those games might have characters who know a particular style, but the game is based around roving around beatin' the piss outta' people. Thus calling a game like that STREET FIGHTER (at least to me) makes a helluva lot more sense than "Final Fight". Then you look at the VS. Fighting games of SF, and everyone is out to prove something in a one-on-one basis. I don't see any street fighting here.

:help:

I see weridos like Blanka who can electrocute ppl, Boxers, Kung Fu artists, Muay Thai mofos, and God knows what else, but where's the "Street Fighting"? ---I know this is "Semantics" but it's always something that makes me shake my head from time to time. *And BMU people didn't complain when there were two sequel to Final Fight + a VS. Fighting game that needed "Revenge" for some odd reason.

Just further curious on your take on this JHendrix (or anyone else)

On that Final Fantasy thing, I'm so tired of seeing articles that have this exact same quote or a very small varient.

"This fantasy definately isn't final" LOLROXORZHAHAHA

It really pisses me off. >_<

Anyway... grr, hard to decide on this poll. I like both names, but I'm so used to saying street fighter, though the only street you really fight in is in China. :)

I know, I bet they would start bitching if there were 10+ installments in the series though. ;) Then again, maybe not, I know I would be happy for more side-scrolling beat-'em-ups these days, names be damned.

Well yeah, see this is part of the reason I voted for Street Fighter. I think the name fits the series better. You're right in the fact that "Street Fighter" would have been a suitable term for Final Fight, but I don't think so vice verca. I think we're just looking at two pretty good, versitile titles. Both would work for either game.

I see what you mean about the whole style of fighting, etc. But I don't like getting into the symantics of it all. "Street Fighter" means a fighter that wouldn't exactly hold to normal fighting rules, just kind of fight to win. Which considering the outlandish characters in the SF series, I think works quite well for the game as is.

I agree, Haggar, Cody, Guy and the crew should've had their series called Street Fighter as they are actually roaming some of the most f'd up streets in videogaming, beating the crap outta lowlifes with basically moves that everyday people could pull off. But the Street Fighter series would seem odd with the name Final Fight --especially how Capcom milked the cow dubbed SFII. SF didnt seem gritty enough for its own name with the miltary bases, scenic backdrops, etc.

because when someone used the acronym FF on an snk message board, we wouldn't know if they were refrring to Street Fighter or Fatal Fury. Sounds liek things turned out for the better!

You have a point there MD.

Also there's the Bare Knuckle series... IMO "Streets of Rage" is far more appropriate. "Bare Knuckle" sounds like a medical documentary on hand therapy or something.

;) You got me on that one!

Well if FINAL FIGHT didn't sound right for the SF series couldn't Capcom come up with something that would've made more sense? *I mean it's moot now anyhow, but think about it... SNK always had decent titles that didn't really get in the way of the practicality of it all. I mean... KING OF FIGHTERS, FATAL FURY... BOTH Titles conjure up the angst, the desperation, the competition of the VS. Fighting games that is the respective franchises.

Street Fighter however, just doesn't match up. Something like Legacy of Rage would have made more sense. People of the marital arts who's legacy was etched in the heat of battle, some more sinister giving their life to rage. OH WELL... I guess you can't win em' all.
