"As reported earlier, SNK Playmore officially announced a slot machine themed after Metal Slug at a hotel in Tokyo today. The company also revealed its business development plans for the short term.

According to Koichi Sotoyama, director of the company, SNK Playmore "will actively use the technology and know-how it cultivated via games in the fields of slot machines and pachinko. We will develop our business in new areas in an attempt to become a general-entertainment firm." The statement was part of his company's business strategy for the current term.

Especially worth paying attention to was the explanation that the company "is moving its core business focus from games to pachinko/slot machines... in particular, we will concentrate our business investment on the quickly growing and highly profitable business of slots."

As part of this new core focus, the company plans to develop five slot machines within the current fiscal year ending July, 12 more in the July 2005 fiscal year, and 15 in the 2006 fiscal year. The theme for their first machine is based on Metal Slug, but the company plans to use famous game titles from other companies as well for future slot and pachinko machines.

As for the game business, Sotoyama said that SNK Playmore will continue to release popular series like KOF and Samurai Spirits on multiple platforms, including arcades and portable phones. The company is also considering the development of slot-machine simulator software for game consoles. It's all part of an effort to succeed as a "general entertainment firm" through the development of new businesses, including the use of slot/pachinko knowhow in the overseas (European) gaming industry."

I guess this is part 1 of Trieu's big announcement.

I pray for the day I can cruise to AC and play a MS slot.

Otherwise, this really blows. It looks like they're going to milk the cash cow that is KOF, SS and MS and just abandon the rest, most likely licensing or selling the IP's to Sammy or Capcom or whoever will move in and let them do the dirty work.

Smart buisness decision, no doubt, but pretty shitty from a fanboy's perspective.

Hopefully, though, whoever starts producing the games will update them a bit, perhaps innovate some stagnant games.

It was bound to happen, though. Weird, SNK as primarily a gambling company.

Agreed 100%. Frankly I couldn't care what they do as long that they don't go under. Keeping SNKP alive is a good thing, at least there will still be hope for future NG releases... hopefully.

Maybe we're reading between the lines a little too much, here (I hope)?

Unless this is that much discussed "mystery project 2004" that they've been teasing us with.

That would be a let-down.

SNK Playmore leaving games - going to Pachinko and slots ?!?!

Actually from what I'm reading they are going to focus on making Pachinko slots, but they are still going to make games.

They're just saying that they will be depending on Pachinko slots as their number one money maker (and most invested product).

Those Sammy rumors are sounding better and better everyday.

At least Sammy likes to make games.

At least Sammy likes to make games.

Last year Sammy released 10 games for the consumer market.
The only one we all know about is Guilty Gear Reload.

The year before that (2002) they released 10 games - But only ones you'd know of are Guilty Gear XX and Guilty Gear for the GBA...

And from 2000~2001 they only made 10 games. Other than Guilty Gear X, you wouldn't care about the rest of the game (one was Guilty Gear Puchi)

This year Sammy has 1 game lined up so far: 7 Samurai 20XX.

Finally a game that's hyped that has nothing to do with Guilty Gear.

But the point is, they don't like to make games. They like to make A game, and a bunch of garbage.

Sammy doesn't make any games, they're just a publisher. Cept now they're a publisher with an arcade platform to push.

The "other games" you're alluding to are games like Deer Hunter, Beach Head, etc.

Shit that does very, very, very, very, very well in sales. Far fucking better than it should. At least in the states anyway. That and Sammy makes a ton of money off Pachinko.

So yeah they've got a big arcade platform to push and no big line up to populate it with. Thing is, they've got more money than they know what to do with from this other stuff.

You know what they're going to do now...:D
