is just a gimmick feature or a "life saving device"? I have found no use for it so is it useless?

If you are stuck in a multi hit throw, (ie Joe's) you can call in your team mate and they will knock them off of you.
It's useful, but the opportunity to use it doesn't come up much.

While you are in the grab you hit ABCD (or was it just ABC?)
anway, your teammate must be visable on screen and they must have a favorable liking to you.
Sometimes they will help if it's just the white smiley
they will help often if it is the yellow happy face.
They will never help if it's the red face.
(these are the faces that you get by holding start at order select).
