How do you get the alternate colors in LB1?

I was screwing around last night and was pressing in on my select button (a button that is a wee bit sticky, and so I'll be replacing it soon). I pressed it a ton and then hit A I think... got a dark looking Amano. Blackish outfit with a silver stick. I never knew there were alt colors in this game, how do you access them?

Pressing A, D, or Start gets you a different color for each.
