Best TV for 2D games?

Since I'm not gettting too many replies in the unrelated forums....

What, in your opinion, is the best TV for 2D games on the market right now? I recently got a 27" samsung HDTV, and it's just been giving me nothing but problems. Weird concavities on the sides of the screen, slight color distortions, strains my eyes for some reason (except with 3d games), and there's scanlines visible all over the place...it just doesn't look that good at all.

So, like a dumbass, doing research AFTER I bought it made me conclude that high definition is not at all the way to go if you're going to be using it mostly with 2D systems. Of course no one mentioned this at the store even though I made clear it would be used mostly for this purpose

I'm going to be returning this thing anyway since it's got all sorts of little fuck-ups that I'm noticing, so I might as well get something more suitable.

What's the best and why? Thanx

Samsung DLP Rear projection

My Samsung 43 inch rear projection DLP just plain rocks with the S-Video coming out of my modded Neo-Geo AES.

The Neo AES was designed for use with a standard 4:3 CRT and as such, that's what it'll look best with. I have a Plasma and my Gamecube looks great on that but the Neo don't so for "Retro", I use a Philips 25" 4:3 CRT. A Neo of the right age, with an RGB Scart lead and the picture settings tweaked looks fantastic on it. MS3 is as "clean" as the PS2 version.

The best u can get is a rgb arcade monitor, very ez to hook up a neo. If u like to play other game consoles I would recommend a euro scart tv. If need it iIwill get the link. I bought a euro tv 220v and I live in us ( need aa step up converter) and it is awesome full blown rgb for all consoles even us gamecube (special cable) altho I do like my cab better. It is the best u can get. Set me back 1000 bucks (included shipping). Trust my its the best. Some love the svid and thats fine, but I am a perfectionest and I even prefer my 25" over my 29".

I have a european Hitachi 50cm (don t remember the reference, it s in my hometown), with 3 SCART sockets (2 beeing RGB/SHVS enabled) on the back and on the front a SVHS, a video composite RCA + 2 audio RCA plugs. The picture is crystal clear on high res video games, my sister's PC is displayed perfectly on it (it can handle the 800x600 resolution but 1024x768 flickers) full screen (no borders) using a geforce4 MX. the best i ve seen for TV display (i use a RADEON 9800pro here), my Guilty Gear X or Crazy Taxi PC look better than the console ones, that s amazing :)

The tube is a Philips, iirc.
The tv cost me something like $1000, my parents thought i was crazy (here you can find 90cm tvs for such price) but i don t regret it.

Well,

If you can get a tv from overseas with scart hook-ups i heard that was the best. But, seeing how yur in vegas(USofA), the best TV I have ever seen with a neo runnin on it is LemonFlavs old 32inch Sony s series set runnin through s-vid hook ups. It looks amazing. I have a hi def wide screen and I see those vertical lines as well(even if i run it in 4:3 mode.). The colors are brite and clear, just anoying lines. Hi-def just doesn't do low res equipment very well. BTW is the tv you bought the samsung from Bestbuy? I was looking at that set too, I brought my neo into Bestbuy and they let me hook up my neo to multiple sets so I could see what hi-def set looked the best. They were great. Hope this helps!!

How exactly do you have scanlines on your 27" Samsung HD? I had that exact television, and it doesn't have a 480i ability. It upscans everything to 480p, which has no noticable scanlines. Anyway, the upscan is the reason the neo doesn't look good on HDTV's. The neo's graphics needs scanlines to look right. I recently went and picked up my neo only tele, and it is amazing how much better an analog TV made my supergun and home system look.

The set I went with for my neo's is the Samsung 27" flatscreen. I tried the higher rated Panasonic, but they don't shield their s-video port well enough, so my PC and my supergun caused so much interference that it was unplayable. The Samsung is perfect as far as color reproduction, adjustment, and picture quality. The audio isn't stellar, but it is adequate. All of this and it matches my Samsung widescreen HDTV, so I look like a big Samsung fanboy. What more can I ask for? :buttrock:

imo the best tv's for gaming are 4:3 Sony's(super trinitron or fd trinitrons) with scart/rgb. These ones
have the best colors(by far) and supperior geometrics(varies a little from model to model).

To ajk1080: I bought mine from ultimate electronics but they do have the same model for sale at best buy.

Anyway, there were no scanlines visible on that model until some sort of flash effect or slow motion effect comes up. It would have been wonderful if not for this, but it's simply far too annoying and constrasts horribly with everything else going on in the game. I was playing Garou on it and every 5 seconds a characters sprite would be replete with harsh looking scanlines, with everything else looking crisp and clear.

So anyway, I took it back. After as much research as I possibly could have done without bringing my systems into stores and asking to have a private room to test everything out, I decided on the 32" Toshiba flat screen.

Immediately I noticed it was better for 2D gaming. Except, now scanlines are just EVERYWHERE. Sometimes I can hardly notice, yet other times it's ALL I can focus on (my sega saturn seems to be the worst with this...)

Maybe I'm too used to my computer LCD monitor? Or playing that HDTV for a few weeks? It just looks a little wrong.

Also, it looks it's absolute best running on it's "movie" mode, with that crappy filter eliminated. Except the moment you turn the contrast up it doesn't look nearly as good anymore. If you don't turn it up, you're left with a bland, dark, very colourless picture.

My 15 year old sony 20" trinitron TV always looked great no matter where the contrast was. It sucks to be actually considering hooking that back up and using it instead of my new one....

Are these scanlines normal?? I mean, they're REALLY noticeable. For instance, when the DC loads up, you don't see a white screen. You see a white and black line-filled screen. During movies it's all I can concentrate on. Is this just because it's 32" and not an HDTV?

I'm very frustrated here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and is sorely needed :) Thanx all.

I know what you are talking about now with the scanlines on the HDTV. They aren't scanlines, that is how the neo creates certain effects such as shadows. It alternates a solid black(or white for flash effects) shadow between the interlaced lines making a transparent effect. On that Samsung set there is no interlaced option, so it just turns out looking like little black lines in the shape of a shadow or flash. It is pretty annoying, but that is just how the neo works.

On the 32" set there is nothing wrong with it, you are just used to the HD. It will get better. You also need to remember that you bought a 32" analog TV. The larger the set, the larger the scanlines. Typically smaller sets like your Trinitron's scanline are damn hard to see, but you bought a HUGE TV. I have found that the 25"-27" is just about the best median between the two.

Anyways, I am actually a lot like you as far as being able to let graphical problems bother me, but if you go to your local arcade and look at the SVC cab, or their other older systems, you will see that scanlines are very much a part of the Neo. Not having them bothered the hell out of me, as I was running my neos on an HDTV as well. Three weeks ago I went and bought a Samsung flatscreen 27" just for the purpose of the Neo. I am keeping my other systems on the HD though, as they look phenominal for the most part, esp my original nintendo. :buttrock:

I had to put my mind at ease so I drove across town to try out my saturn and dreamcast on my father's 4 year old 32" sony WEGA (first model I believe...).

I didn't notice the scanlines at all. The picture was infinitely better. I could turn off the sharpening filters and also turn the picture up without terrible contrasts. It looked pretty stunning.

I went right back to fry's and arranged to exchange this one out for a newer model 32" wega. About 200 bucks more, but fuck it, the picture was amazing.

I don't know what the hell is up with my toshiba...I can't believe the quality could be so drastic between two brands. It's strange that out of all the reviews I read when making my initial decision the toshibas actually were rated higher than the wega's...hmmm. Oh well, I'm happy as fuck now :)
