Lines in 2d sprites on HDTV?

Hey all. I'm using a 27 inch high definition TV and I'm noticing lines in certain sprites. 90% of it due to flashing. For instance, if a sprite flashes (like the SFIII parry blue flash) the flash will be interspersed with blank lines. I noticed this in Ikaruga as well (when your ship is flashing after you die).

It happens in many games, and also appears to come up when things go into slow motion. Is this due to using an HDTV? Or something else? Can anything be done about it? Thanx in advance :)

It's just scanlines. It's there on all TV's just that it shows up more on higher quality TV's. The big push behind progressive scan on newer game systems and DVD players is that it completely gets rid of that.

it's because you're running 480i low res games upscaled to 1080i (like street fighter 3). your 27 inch HDTV upscales everything to 1080i regardless if it's HD or not. it's gonna happen until they make 2-D games for high definition.
