I'm not happy with the slight yellowing on my cab. It's not a huge deal, but it would look SOOOO much nicer if it was all even white with the metal. I tried so many things, and even read that a tire cleaner got some stains out of plastics from a pinball newsgroup. Now I've gone as far as thinking about spraypainting it white. I know they make white paint for plastics. What do you think? I know it's been posted here before, but if I did this would it look worse than before? With a nice glossy white? What do you think?

Did you try using a plastic polish or a very fine auto buffing compound to remove the very outside layer of plastic?

It's the standard Neo Candy 29. Has the four slots for marquees with speakers on the underneath left and right sides (not extreme left and right like some, with the small speakers). Has the SNK logo in chrome on the top and "NEO GEO" also lights up witht he marquees. I have a picture of the 25 that I had, which is pretty much the same as this one. I've taken out the buttons and cleaned them, ordered two brand new sticks... this is about all I have left to do to make my candy PERFECT. Well, I still need a lock on the top, but I have a little Ryu that sits on top so you can't see where the lock should be. ;)

I may go for it. They make plastic white gloss paint. If anything, I'll spray a part that I won't see (like the inside of the back plastic... there's three plastic pieces. The part that holds the screen, the part that covers the speaker and locks in the marquees, and then the part behind THAT. That's all. I can spray it and see if it looks good or not without ruining the look of everything on the outside. May do that as a project on my days off here and will give my report if interested. :)

Speaking of the window that covers the monitor, is there a clear version of this? I always think my monitor looks sweet as hell when it's lifted up (because the protective screen is smoked.. not much, but just a tiny bit). Not a huge deal as I've gotten compliments on how sharp the picture looks when it's on, but if I could get a perfectly clear one, I'd like to have it. Just a thought.

I'll shut up now,
Spike

So it looks like this ..yes..?

Does this glass have any curvature to it?

Otherwise you could just get a clear piece of glass cut to match your own at a glass company..it may be a bit costly though..

Plexy Glass may be cheaper but I don't know how clear plexy is..

Try a product called " NOVUS " plastic cleaner

it has 3 types

#1 makes plastic clean and shiny
#2 removes yellowing and light scuffs/scratches
#3 removes deep yellowing and deeper scuffs/scratches

Let me know how this works out for you, Ive seen pics of stuff people used this on, and its awesome!

Just use spray paint on the wooden parts of your Candy.

Hmmm... you've used this product yourself to restore yellowed plastic? Just curious because the NOVUS descriptions chris put up didn't mention getting rid of yellowing... and yellowing is an age old problem lots of plastics.

I havent used it myself.

Ive seen the results on acrylic/plastic windows on boats, it did wonders to it... And ive seen what it can do on those plastic "window" on convertible cars, the one that fogs out/yellows with time... it was 90% clear again.

Here, i found the complete kit for you... $11

http://www.spadepot.com/products/005novus.htm

Has all 3 kinds of novus...

Do you know what a Neo Candy looks like? There wouldn't be much paint used on my "wooden" parts. ;)

Spike,

Go ahead and spray paint it with a nice automotive white gloss paint. That's the best route.

Chances are the plastics have yellowed because the chemicals/elasticizers contained in them have leaked or broken down some because of the environment it was exposed to.

Painting it would be the easiest root and likely give you the best finish. Since it is straight yellowed white plastic you'd probably only really need to wash it good and give it a nice medium-fine sand before painting(enough to rough the surface some, but still leave a smooth finish). Automotive quality paints adhere to plastics readily and you would really only need to give it a coat of primer if you were painting it another color.

Just 2 or 3 even coats of nice gloss white should do the trick. Use more coats if necessary and don't try and go too heavily in any one pass. Several coats will result in a much better (and not sloppy) finish compared to one or two heavy ones.

Using a compressor and spray painter are best for large jobs, but something that small should be fine with spray cans so long as you're careful and follow the instructions.
