Using an alternative PSU in a Treamcast?

First of all, this is Neo related because I have some INFERIOR DC ports :D.

The Treamcast comes bundled with a very small external psu, that switches automatically between 110-220V AC input. It outputs 12V DC at 2.8A, which I think is a lot for such a small thingy. Since I plug it at 220V, the result is that it overheats quite a lot. If you use it for a short while (even less than 30 minutes), switch it off and then on again, it doesn't work, you need to wait a few minutes for it to cool down a bit before you can use it again.

I also have a very big universal PSU, but its maximum is 1.5A, so I guess I shouldn't use it. What could be a good and cheap PSU to use with the Treamcast? Could I just mod somehow a PC AT PSU?

By the way, I just thought if using a stepdown converter from 220V to 110V would help. Would this make the Treamcast's PSU heat less?

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Amano,

I am curious as to how much you paid for your Treamcast? I am looking to get one soon and I would like to have an idea of what they cost. Thanks for your time.

I bought it here:

I think it is 200$ + shipping. I bought it some months ago. Since the $ was (and now it is even more) so fucking low against the €, it was quite a good deal. Anyway the screen's quality is not as good as I would like it to be, but I guess that for the price and size you can't ask for more.

Why not simply measure what current the Treamcast is actually drawing? Maybe you will be ok with the 1.5A supply.

this place you mention has some good deals on some consoles, where are they based?, and when they say complete does that mean boxed?, also it says 8 weeks after payment!, sounds a bit dodgy!

Oh well, I guess it is worth a try, but I just don't really know how to measure it... I have a very simple multimeter.

RVF, they are in Hong Kong: http://www.otakumw.com/index.php?s=27&p=1&o=2&r=1278

I don't know what you mean with "8 weeks", they had the Treamcast in stock when I bought it and it shipped inmediately, and arrived here in around a week. However, if you want something that it is not in stock it may take longer, contact them if you are not sure.

I just tried my 1.5A PSU, and at first it worked OK... while there wasn't a CD inserted. I put a game and then the console stopped working. I guess that when the CD lector starts working, the power drawn is too big so it just turns off.

I think I will check laptop PSUs if I manage to find any.

I'm still open to suggestions.
