I boot the machine up and it just shows a grid, if i press 1player it goes through rgb tests etc etc but will not let me play a game.
The guy i bought it off thinks it may be stuck in test mode, how do i get it out?
Its an electrocoin 6slot cab btw

Have you checked that the dip switch is not flicked down ?

i expect u have but when i pushed pause on my slot before i forgot and when i put in a new game the screen was just blank and i tried for ages putting in all different carts till i realised the pause dip was down or tried edging the carts a little as some are very sensetive and eed a slight pulling for it to register

all dips are set to zero, weird tho, i cant find a test button and it doesnt let me choose to change any softdips, just cycles through grid, rgb, io tests the calender etc.
Ive tried everything and am now well and truly stuck :crying:

I should mention, when i put a cart in a start it up i get a flash of a green screen with garbled bits on then it goes to the grid, if i start up without a cart in i just get the grid with no flash of a green screen

I saw the post about the test switch and am not convinced thats the problem as it worked then froze with a grid screen and after re-booting its always been in test mode.
Heres a picture of my test switch setup

Lets see if we can norrow things down..

.........................................................................
If your getting a spash screen, maybe it's not reading the cart/s..Like if it's a dirty cart/s..or dirty slots.
Try the cart/s in all the slots..
I wonder if that could be a bad slot..

Clean the carts..and the mother board...
That can't hurt..

Make sure the top of the board looks securely into the bottom of the board..
Do all the white ports/plugs on the board look pressed all the way down..
Are any of the screws loose keeping the board together.

How many carts are you putting in..?

Try this below...Maybe you have a Uni Bios chip installed..

The following codes should be used while the splash screen is showing or
held during power up if the splash screen is disabled;

(A)+(B)+(C) UNIVERSE BIOS Menu

(A)+(B)+(C)+(D) Memory Card Manager

(B)+(C)+(D) Test Mode
The following codes are available in game only;

(START)+(SELECT) In Game Menu

(START)+(COIN) In Game Menu
...........................................................

Take the wires off the test switch/from the back of the switch..maybe it's stuck..messes up..
Are the switches ok?

Take the wires off the service switch..

What color is the Harness ?

Do this machine have it's original wiring Harness.?

My 4 slot flips to this screen every time I turn it on, but then it goes right to a game....... I don't think that screen is bad! I think it's just normal...... but I should start up quickly right after that. I may be wrong, but that's how mine works.

Good luck!!!

Ive sure up all the connectors but to be honest they all looked ok, ive cleaned all slots and all the carts and tried every cart in every slot to no avail.
My supplier thinks the board has died, especially seeing as it "crashed" with a game being on.
Its a UK bios not a universal one
Just to be safe he's sending me another board which will be here Monday morning.

Before i take this board out in preperation for the new one turning up can you tell me if these connectors are right (so i dont mess up on the new board)

If they are right then he may be right in assuming the board is dead

Step 1, clean the slots and mvs cart(s). Iirc if you boot your mvs without a cart inserted (or if no contact is being made) then it just sits in the test mode cycle like you describe. I seem to remember my 2 slot doing this when I first got it.

White paper method? Personally I use a can of spray electrical contacts cleaner and a toothbrush. It's a good idea to have a can of something like this if you own an mvs setup - carts get dirty and poor contact is a common problem unless you clean 'em.

spray electrical contacts cleaner

Like wd40? If not what exactly do you use and ill get some to try. The white paper method is just to run a piece of white paper over the slots and it will attract the dirt (it does work)

WD40 is a lubricant, you want a can of contacts cleaner. Just ask at your local electronics shop for something to clean electrical contacts with. Specifically I use Servisol Aero Klene 50 'electronic cleaning solvent'. There are lots of different brands of this sort of stuff, desigened for use on electronic components. You just spray it on and it evaporates away.

Glad to help. Also it's worth noting that 4 and 6 slots are notorious for being iffy. Try plugging your carts into different slots, different orders etc. You might find you have a dodgy slot somewhere or your board doesn't like a certain slot-cart combination.

The problem could also be due to bad wiring on the jamma harness. Then you get to the chequered screen cycle through the screens until you get to the input test screen. Now make sure there is not a '1' next to the test mode button, also make sure all the hard dips (on the same screen) show 0.

If there is a one then the is bad wiring on the jamma harness. If there is a 1 on the hard dips then a contact on the actual dips is bad or dirty.

All dips are set to zero and show zero in the test program, guess all will be answered when the new board shows up
