Hey guys, hoping that you can give me an assist :)

I as reading through past threads about building custom sticks for the Neo AES and I've read the the Belkin DB 15 cables were good to use. Now, I know that the female end goes into the Neo, but I'm curious about the male. end Do you solder the wires coming from the joystick to the male end as it is, or do you have to chop the head off? Or prehaps do you need a gender changer to create a double female cable?

Thanks for the assist!

It depends on how do you design the stick... You can chop off the male end and directly connect the bare wires to the buttons, or mount a female DB-15 in the stick and connect the extension cable there.

In www.sgrepository.com there are pics of both ways.

I would go this way personally... as it's just less work :)

Less work...you kidding?? With your method you have to drill a db-15-shaped hole in the plastic, then solder the wires to the db-15 port and also to the buttons, whereas with the other method you just have to drill a round hole the size of the cable and solder (or crimp) the bare wires to the buttons...

Do you mean something like this?

Yup, that's one example of somebody who mounted a female DB-15, and there he can connect and extension cable.

I agree with MKL that chopping off the male end and directly connecting the wires (via soldering, crimping, or even just "sticking" them) is much less work. That's what I did in my examples here:

Notice that I also modified a DC stick, like the one from riotoftheblood you mentioned, but I maintained the DC compatibility. You don't even have the need to drill a new hole for the extra cable, you can use one that was in the VMU slot, although because of it you wouldn't be able to use a VMU.

Now there are two cables coming from it, one for DC and one for supergun. I admit sometimes it as a bit uncomfortable, thus it could be a good idea to mount the female DB-15 port to remove the extension cable when you are not using it for the supergun. Notice that Kernow did it this way here:

Nope.... I like db15 pin cover-faceplates for the hole and then it's not hard at all...below is one that I made for a 25pin and it cost about $1.00 and took about 3 minutes to make. Then, you don't have to mess with the stripping of the extension cord.

of course you would use a female db15 and a plate that fit....

But hey.... different people take different approaches. I would rather wire up a db15 socket to loose wires then strip some control or extension cable and connect those. Not to mention that they would leave you an extra 8 in. to a foot on your controller's cord length....

Like I said, different approaches for different people :)

Thanks for the info :) But about the DB-15 used in RiotoftheBlood's stick.....it has just the DB15 head and no cable. Do stores sell them like this or was the cable removed manually?

Yes, you can buy just the "head" in an electronics store, actually just a connector usually made with metal, to be mounted somewhere. It should be much cheaper than a full cable (which you would need to buy anyway, by the way). Most likely, Riot uses a regular DB-15 male to female cable with that stick, but it just isn't pictured.

@NGT: You are right, everybody just chooses the way he feels more comfortable with. I suck at soldering and mounting those connectors so I just used the other way :)
