Yesterday I was playing my NeoGeo CD system (US top loader) and half way through the game a black screen popped up that said:

DISC I/O ERROR
( ID = 0001 )

PLEASE POWER OFF

I tried playing a few different games and I got that same error in every game. Today I tried playing my system and it wont play any of my games at all. It goes to the CD player screen but it wont start the game, it wont play any of my music CD's either. The system powers up perfectly and the disc spins. Is there a problem with the lens? I took very good care of this system, I rarely play it. Does anyone know what the problem is or do I have to buy another system? Thanks

yeah i had the same thing with my US one, it happens randomly at first then gets worse and worse, it started with LB2 then progressed to the simple loads like legue bowling, if you leave your console for a few days and try again it will take around 20 mins to do it again, i sold mine to CEX!. sorry to hear about you neo-cd its a damn shame about the build quality :(

Mine was doing that upon startup. I had to turn on the system like 30 times before it would boot a game. It also made a weird grinding noise. After a game loaded, it ran fine though. It got increasingly worse, so I butchered the system for the joystick ports.

Basically the drive is caput. Get another system. Shawn used to carry CD repair kits in the neostore, but that was probably two years ago.

If I want to run a Neo Geo CD game now, I just use an emulator on my computer. I'm not going to buy another one of those pieces of crap.

Just from what I've heard, a CDz is prone to breakdown more than the top loader.

Nope. Just use an emulator. You can change regions/language easily. Plus load times are nonexistant.

My top loader did that , all i did was clean the lens with a piece of tissue, poked it with my finger and blew on it and now it works perfect. I had a similar problem way back on the first issue ps1 but that got worse after i tried my cleaning method. I think what happens is that the lens goes slightly out of line and can't read the disc properly. Dont forget that neo cds are old technollogy compared to cd drives today, reminds me of the days of black and white tele when we used to wallop the side of it to get the picture to stop scrolling up the screen.
