I just bought an AES system with no power adapter. I'm not sure if the system even works so I don't want to sink a bunch of money into the official one. Can I use another adapter or a Universal Radio Chack one with selectable voltage. Please help! I want to turn on my system, but I don't want to burn it up.

Don't get a universal one, you will most likely need the proprietary adapter used for NEO...depending on the serial number, this will determine what model you have and which power adapter you need. It also matters whether its a Jap or US console. I have an 11000 (about) US console, and I use the 5v 3A adaptor, not something you can find at Radio Shack.

I don't know which one you need, but I wanted to jump in here and warn you to not go out and buy a generic adapter to 'just see if it works'. Yes you could fuck it up. Someone else can surely help you decide which adaptor you need, and you can probably buy it from Shawn here at the NeoStore.

Are you talking about using a Japanese AES in America? 100-110v is not huge. I can't count the number of Japanese electronics I have at my place using no voltage adapter at all. If you're talking about the A/C adapter itself... I've heard of selling it without a box or controllers, but who sells a Neo without the A/C adapter?! If neither of these are what you're talking about, um, sorry.

go to ebay and get a gen 1 genesis adapter; works like a charm

edit: providing your not using an early system requiring 5 volts

:shame:

This is a harmful piece of advice because if his machine is an early model that works with 5V, then a genesis PSU (9V) will damage it.

I made an edit.

Reread his post; he did not say. For 90% of the systems out there I gave good advice, but still you're right. So I made the edit. ;-)

Actually I bought my adapter from Radio Shack, and it is the Universal one, and it is for a US system 5v 3A, but the universal is only 5v 2A

I asked everyone here at the time if this was ok, and everyone said it was fine.

I've had my system now for 3 months, and have played SSII, FFS, LB1, and LB2 with no problem

In fact a member here (The_Chosen_One) told he's been using his for quite some time and played even the higher meg games with no problem.

Thats interesting and I'm glad it works for you. If we were talking about ANY other system than Neo Geo, I would, and have used, non-factory Power Supply's, because any other system is easily replaced. I can't find it in my heart to recommend to anyone anything other than a factory specification PS . It's simply not worth the risk, especially when you invest money to have the AES modified etc...I'm not risking my Super Neo just to save a few bucks on a Power Supply, thus I won't recommend anyone else do the same. Yes, I'm overly anal about the condition of my NEO. :D

This could be a really stupid question but I'm curious. To me it only looks like there are 2 different types; the pro pow and the neo pow. Now if this is true then why are there different letters following the type of adapter. I'm getting a new US system soon with a serial number of 28,000+ and from what I can tell from this list I need a pro pow UL. Would it be much different if I used a pro pow AD, E or 2 since they are all pro pow's? There has to be some kinda difference. Sorry if this is really dumb, I don't want to blow up my new modded neo :)

Thanks!

Well, if you are getting a NEW one like you say, then it obviously has a Power Supply with it. You don't even have to worry about it really.

Well the person i'm getting it from is very trustworthy so i'm not too worried but he sells a lot of neo stuff and if I end up with a pro pow 2 or AD I just want to make sure its ok. I always thought that the only difference between the adapters was one was japanese and one was us with different voltages. Also the system isnt brand new, I meant new as in new to me :) sorry about that.

You could always ask him to make sure he gives you the right PS before shipping it out...I'm sure he won't mind.

In my experience,the PRO-POW 3 needs 9V and the rest use 5V
