Panasonic 26" RGB TV, the source of my gaming for a while since it was handed to me by my folks when they upgraded to a 47"

anyway,

one day, it didn't turn the screen on, anymore, now it just plays sound, its on, the power light is on, its playing sound, but the screen doesn't click on, its just off..

is it dead? please say no :(

I love this TV too much..

I guess it could be repaired for cheap.. maybe..

I shall check this out and get back to you? will I be able to tell after 30 seconds of it being on or will I have to wait a few minutes?

The same happened to me many years ago, all of a sudden no pic but still sound... I managed to fix it with a big punch on it, really. Unfortunately it didn't last long 'til the problem came back, so soon the TV was getting more punches than a sparring partner and it worked every time but the punches had to be stronger and stronger...to cut a long story short I ended up with a totally broken TV and an injured hand:buttrock:

Ah, the times when I was young and carefree...

You should see them in about ten seconds after switch on. If they are there it confirms the horizontal output stage is running, it probably is ,as the voltage rails required for the audio stages are derived from the lfbt (but not always the case)

Its my guess that the set has a frame collapse, most sets will reduce the brightness level or beam limit when this occurs to prevent burn in on the crt phosphors. If you turn up the screen volts the vertical line will appear. Im not suggesting you do this if your not familiar with TV circuitry.

I you were familiar I guess you woulnt have asked the question

The HOT might be shorted...but that usually blows any fuses in the system. Might be shorted open instead of closed though. Check all the fuses and replace as necessary then try it out.

An easy test that's not really dangerous is to turn up the G2/Screen adjustment on the flyback all the way and see if the screen turns grey/white. If it doesn't it's most likely a transistor or the flyback itself.

Wouldnt recommend fecking about in the back of a television unless you really know what you're doing. I've fried the bejaysus out of myself a few times and I believe there's enough power in there to kill. Local TV repair bloke would be the best bet if a solid thump to the side of the casing doesnt help.

You should be able to see the glow from the heaters through the air vent slots on the back of the case surrounding the crt's neck. If not, then you could try opening it up just to get a better look. It would be easier to see it in a dark room.

If you do decide to open it up, you may as well check the fuses. And remember to unplug the tv. After you open the back, you should see something that resembles a suction cup with a thick wire sticking out of it. DO NOT TOUCH THAT WIRE. It stores a large ammount of electic current, even after the tv's been unplugged. I'd say that its the most dangerous part of the tv's insides. I've taken apart a few tv's before, that wire can be easily avoided as long as you stay cool.

Thats about all I the advice I can give you for now. Good luck and hope the tv can be saved.
