I'm trying to assess the desire for an S-Video mod for the Turbo Grafx/Duo systems. I believe I'll be able to put it together without too much problem, but it ain't gonna be cheap since I need to convert RGB to S-Video to do it.

Interested? What do you think a good price is?

I'd be interested if it was $40-50. Would you be able to do both RGB and S-Video together? That'd be awesome... :)

Yeah, I'd like to do it for $40-50, but that ain't happnin'
Think about how pricey a JROK is since it does the same thing.

On the other hand, RGB out would be much cheaper. But who can use that in the States? Unless you use a computer monitor which is easily possible.....

You had to ask this question after I got my system back from you for the region mod, didn't you? ;)

I was actually going to ask you about this. Seeing as my NES has better composite image quality than my Duo, which sucks quite honestly, I'd definitely be interested in a Duo S-video mod.

Think you could do it to the PCE/Duo-R also?

Hey, how'd that system treat ya?

I find that the Duo image quality is at least pretty good, but yeah it could use some improvement.

Could definitely be done on a Duo-R, but the PC Engine and Core Grafx (the small systems) will be a royal pain in the rumpus. So tiny inside already.

I'm not at all famiiar with a JROK mod. Doesn't give me much idea really :D

He is talking about shoving one of these little guys in there (it converts RGB to S-video and composite):

JROK website

The composite out on the JROK is probably similiar to what is already provided on the Duo and PC Engines, but the S-video is fucking wonderful. Easily as good as the S-video out from a SNES or better (just for comparison). Me luves 'em. :D

D-Lite: I am guessing you aren't going to use the built-in sockets and go with panel mounts? If you do, order the JROKs straight from James @ JROK and request they don't have the s-video and composite jacks on them. This will save you space in your mod.

I have bought around 6 or so since my first one without the jacks on board.

So you'd have to convert to RGB and THEN convert to S-Video? Hmmm....that's kinda complicated. Well, either way, let me know what it'd cost! I'd be interested, but the price really is the deciding factor!

No, no, it takes straight RGB (which is available on the inside of the Duo's and PCEngines) and then encodes it to S-video. It gives video output that is very, very close to straight RGB. Its quite nice.

I would also be intrested in this mod for my Duo-R, what is the estimated price right now? how much would it be for just the RGB mod?

I will have to mount external S-Video, which means the mount ain't desirable. Thanks for the tip broken.

Yeah, you tap the RGB direct from the Hu6280 chip. Apparently also from the expansion port. I have to try this, but currently I'm just gauging interest in it and there seems to be a good amount.

The JROK itself goes for $80, probably a bit less without the mounts. All in all, the mod would probably cost about $100 or so in parts alone. Which is a scary number. I think a better option is RGB out through a d-sub 9pin connector, like a monitor cable. Then maybe provide the JROK slammed in a little box as a external converter that could be used to swap RGB to S-Video/composite for multiple devices.

Is there no way to make it an internal mod with an S-Video port on the back? Like the AES S-Video mods? Looking at that chip that broken posted a pic of, I'd think you could add it inside the Duo and just cut a hole or two in the back or left side with a Dremel. But I'm not a system modding expert! My setup already has no less than 3 splitter boxes for assorted cables....another one would be pushing it! And...$80...damn! OW. I'd have to think hard on it if we're talking near $100. That's a good bit of coin on a Duo mod. I doubt I'd want it in an external box either, much as it'd be nice.

Oh, it'd be just as easy putting the S-Video on the back rather than external. What I'm saying is that by making the converter external, it'd allow you to use that converter for other RGB devices on a normal TV, rather than it being dedicated solely to use on the Turbo.

Yeah, $80 ain't cheap. That's why I'm askin'

I made an S-Video TG16 once just for the heck of it. Basically the same idea - route the RGB to an S-Video converter. It worked well, and a nice side benefit was that the RGB passthrough on the CXA2075 chip I used was excellent; much better than any of the transistor-based RGB amps that you usually see.

Never bothered doing it to any other systems - since the mod was so much more work than RGB and the picture quality wasn't as good anyways, I didn't give it much thought.

Never tried a JROK (way too expensive for something like this), but I'm sure the S-Video quality would be the same. However, using the JROK would make it difficult to have both S-Video and composite on the same console.

Actually, I still have the system if anyone wants it. It's in pieces right now but it wouldn't take much to put it back together again.

If I'm doing the video mod, yep, should be doable.

I'll see if I can put one together soon and post it in the EE forum.

I know this is sorta off topic, but what about a Genesis model 1??

I just modded a Genesis 2 a few days ago with S-Video and Stereo and it was extremely easy (just a few resistors, connectors and wires)......a model 1 would be a bit different as it does not have a CXA-1645 as some of the model 2 and 3's do (I think the model 1's have a CXA-1145...probably just need some caps and resistors, though).

I'll be doing my Duo RX shortly with the RGB encoder/S-Video...great idea and should be sweet!

Later....

I had my Duo modded with S-video, but it's a straight luma/chroma mod, and unfortunatly looks like crap. I would love to have a better S-video mod, so keep us informed!!!

I'm up for the idea, though like the others have stated, the price would play a factor in it.

Though I have to say, I am currently using the standard Composite jack on the back of my TG-16 CD-ROM on a flat screen TV and it looks pretty damn good. My TV has a "theater mode"you can select that seems to boost the picture quality.

Keep us posted, Dean! :glee:

I'm waiting for some PCE HuCards to arrive so I can try out the mod. Nice clean job though. Very good work.

How about stereo RCA as well so we can ditch the Duo A/V cable entirely?

A package deal with S-video, stereo RCA, and region switch would be sweet. I'm the type who likes to have backup systems stored away so I'd definitely send a few in your direction.

!arcade! does these mods. Two of my model 1's are on their way back to me right now. He does S-video, stereo RCA, and a region switch.

That would be a good idea, since the Duo AV din cable is known to be highly problematic.
