Ok, i've been AES for soo long, and am thinking of going MVS in addition to my AES collection. I figure it will be a fun little project to work with as well. Especially over the holidays.

So my first questions are as follows:

What MVS boards allow the aes home joystick plugins?
Do all MVS boards have these inputs? If not, how do ppl get them working with their systems?

What board would be recommended for making a 1 slot consolized system? How much do these run, and does anyone have any links?

Secondly, what else is needed besides the MVS board to make a barebones consolized system? Just a power supply? Where can you purchase a power supply? Which one is recommended? What specs, etc? Link?

Thirdly, will just a sauldering iron be the only required tools? or?

What else am I missing here? I really need some n00b info here for the mvs route and my project.

Has anyone done a faq using a 1 slot on this kinda project?

Thanks!

Lots of good info just between here & Broken's SGR site. I've searched the forums here for most of the items needed to build one.

For the various boards check hardMVS:

http://www.hardmvs.com/html/PCBcompare.htm

There are some 1 slots with joystick ports, I'd recommend a 2-slot thou, the MV-2F, with it you'd get the controller ports, a socketed BIOS, some 1 slots are soldered, and you get the addition of a memory card slot, the 1 slots don't have this, but it may not be an issue if you are keeping the AES.

In addition to the MVS unit you will need

JROK:
http://www.jrok.com/

This converts the RGB to a either s-video or composite to hook to your tv,

power supply:
http://www.jameco.com/cgi-bin/ncomm...w/report?sort=BPA&search=203043&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

A socket for the above PS on your system:
http://www.jameco.com/cgi-bin/ncomm...searchResult.d2w/report?sort=BPA&search=15843

S-video &/or composite video outputs,

Audio outputs,

on/off rocker switch,

power light/led (possibly, would require resistors to change voltage, even if you wanted a lighted Rocker switch),

mini buttons for test/select buttons(these aren't neccessary either)

Your local Radio Shack or partsexpress.com should have all of these little parts. As well as some wire & solder.

Really it depends on how you want to finish it up. I'm building one it will be S-video & stereo, I'm not putting a composite jack on it. And just a on/off rocker & the power hookup. Not alot of pieces really, the biggest purchases are the JROK & powersupply, that $100 in addition to the board you pick out. The rest can be had for cheap.

Also that Jameco PS is good for the smaller 1 slots & the 2 slots, not the larger 1 slots, that's what most people here are using I've seen for building these thou.

You can solder everything right off the jamma pins or buy an adapter from:
http://www.therealbobroberts.com/

And solder to the adapter and simply plug it on, it looks better when it's soldered directly to the board thou, but you may feel better soldering on a $5 part rather than a $100-175 board. ;)

And finally you'll probably want to paint it up, and mine only came with those little stand off feet for when it was mounted to a board in a cab, so I'm buying a piece to go under it, so that the electronics aren't rubbing the carpet, static is not a good thing on pcbs. Broken used a nice looking acrylic cutlery board, from Target, but even a small piece of plywood should work.

Even though RacerX covered most of the important things, there are a couple things to note.

I suggest consolizing a 2 slot for the following reasons:

1. Since it has builtin controller ports, that is less work for you to do (soldering all the wiring for extra controller ports can be a real hassle).

2. It has a nice metal shell that can be easily sanded, primered and painted to your hearts content.

3. Of course UniBios capable.

4. When finished, it looks the most like an actual console.

Also, I would suggest not using the Composite video on the JROK at all. It flat out fucking sucks. The s-video, on the other hand, is all but damn near perfect.

Depending on the parts used, a 2 slot console can be built for between $300 to $350 in parts (2 slot board, psu, JROK, connectors and switches and such) and some of your time.

Wow. Thanks for the responses. Prolly end up gettng the 2 slot just cause it sounds easier.

Where is the best place to find a MV-2F?

How easy is it to add on the memory card reader on to the 1 slot?

mdgames has jap 2 slotters w/out the mem card ports for 150
at least he did anyways, not sure if hes still got em
can get much cheaper than that

hardmvs will help you with the joyport questions

to add the mem card thing you just plug the cables in
hardmvs will also tell you what boards work with that
