debug bios or roms chips, what are they made of?

just curious, I am changing a chip in my home system and I used a dremmel to get the old one off and I skinned the side of the chip so some powder was flyin, just curious what their made out of. Just one of my hypocondriac questions :emb:

They are made of magic smoke...

Onetime i was fiddling with my motherboard while running. It started to smoke then never worked again. I guess I somehow let out the magic smoke.

normal proms are made of plastic (the shell anyways).

eproms are usually made of ceramic with a glass window.

i was just reading actually and I believe its just silicon, was just curious. Not like I snorted it, just some was getting in the air.

Why did you take a dremmel to it? Why not take a flat screwdriver and simply pry it off using essentially no force at all, and it leaves the old chip still usable...

doing that with a non-socketed AES chip is gonna result in a very, very ugly MB :P
