Be aware that this is a Famicom DISK game...you'll need the disk drive to play it.

Just letting you know.

Ah yes the rare Super Mario Bros. 2 on Famicom Disk Drive, god it was so good. Ironically it is extremely common in Japanese stores that sell used games

You mean it is a disk? They never made it into a cartridge?

Nope, never on cart, it was on a two sided floppy disk, you will need a Famicom DD

You could always get the GBC version of super mario deluxe and play the lost levels. That's how I got em. Great game...one of the hardest if you haven't played any mario in a long while.

Or get the bootleg/Hong Kong cart Mario Family , which has all the mario famicom games.
I prefer it to Allstars, the "updates" made me sick, just prefer the originals 100%

I used to have Mario Deluxe but I don't remember what happened to it? But I don't remember the lost levels being in that cart. Or we could have.

Super Mario Advance 5:The Lost Levels.

easy to unlock it on GBC, get 300,000 points, and when you return to the menu, it will show a picture of Luigi and there ya go, The Lost Levels

Thank you, I shall buy this game and try it, the graphics are still old school right?

Yes SMB2 (USA verison) was released in 1992 for Famicom under the name 'Super Mario USA", yet Doki Doki has a completely different cast of characters....and Doki Doki was released in 1987

I still wonder why Nintendo decided to slap over images of Mario characters and call this SMB2 for the USA?

since I'm more of a nes man than a neo man....

Reasons for porting over Panic As SMB II

1. Lost levels was thought to be to difficult for the USA market

2. Lost levels ws thought to be to much like SMB

3 Doki outsold Lost levels in Japan......

4. Americans woudln;'t like doki's charecters

5. Americans will play anything with mario in it (cart, golf, tennis, etc)

Yes NOJ felt the American audience would be too bored with just a direct sequel. Doki Doki Panic is actually more fun I thought, was just a shame to just steal it and put Mario on it.

Now the one thing about the old school graphics, is they were alot different on the Famicom DD, versus the GBC Port of "The Lost Levels",

Here is the difference

http://www.classicgaming.com/tmk/smb2j.shtml

Notice in the JPN SMB 2 the brick floor is changed, the clouds have more detail, and the trees are changed.

In the GBC verison, they just re-used the SMB1 sprites again

Oh and for kicks, here is Doki Doki Panic Vs. SMB2 (USA) Comparison

Yes, pirate versions on cart do exist. I have one (but I don't want to sell it).

The Japanese SMB1 had the same brick floor as SMB2 - I think they just changed it for the US SMB1.

No, the JPN SMB1 looks dead on like the American.

Due to the fact the original release date was 9/13/85 for JPN
and the USA got SMB 10/15/85, only a month later

another suggestion, is if you cant find a disk drive for your famicom, you should invest in a Sharp Twin Famicom (2 in 1 system)

Ah - maybe this is because my Famicom SMB1 cart was a knockoff? I clearly remember them having the same floor graphics.

Not that it matters, of course.

No, because how can you knock off something that was released for the first time back then?
